Chapter 21 - CHAPTER 21 — Don’t Move

The night went silent.

Not calm.

Not safe.

Silent like something was about to break.

Elena stood behind him.

Too close.

Too exposed.

Her heart was racing.

Fast.

Too fast.

Three men.

One in front.

Two in the shadows.

Watching.

Waiting.

"You should have stayed away," the man repeated.

Adrian didn't move.

His voice was quiet.

"You were warned."

A pause.

Then—

"And you still came."

The man smiled.

Cold.

"You think you can hide her?"

Elena's chest tightened.

"I don't hide," Adrian said.

A beat.

"I remove problems."

Silence.

That landed.

Hard.

The man's smile faded.

Just slightly.

"Is that what you did to me?" he asked.

A pause.

Then—

"Yes."

No hesitation.

No regret.

Nothing.

Elena felt it.

That shift again.

This wasn't control.

This was power.

Real.

Dangerous.

The man stepped closer.

"You took everything."

Adrian's gaze didn't move.

"You made a mistake."

"That's not an answer."

"It's the only one you get."

Silence.

The tension snapped.

Fast.

Too fast.

One of the men moved.

Adrian reacted instantly.

"Don't move."

That wasn't for them.

That was for her.

Elena froze.

Everything blurred.

Movement.

Impact.

Sound.

Adrian moved first.

Fast.

Precise.

He grabbed the closest man.

Pulled him forward.

Controlled.

Not messy.

Calculated.

The second man rushed in.

Too late.

Adrian turned.

Blocked.

Struck.

Sharp.

Clean.

The man dropped.

Elena's breath stopped.

This wasn't a fight.

This was control.

Absolute.

The third man hesitated.

That was his mistake.

Adrian stepped forward.

Slow now.

Dangerous.

The man backed up.

"You don't understand—" he started.

"I do."

A pause.

Then—

"You shouldn't be here."

Silence.

The man looked at Elena.

Desperate.

"You don't know what he is," he said.

Her chest tightened.

She didn't answer.

Couldn't.

Because she was starting to understand.

Adrian stepped closer.

Enough.

"Leave," he said.

That word wasn't a warning.

It was a decision.

The man hesitated.

Then—

He stepped back.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Then turned.

And ran.

The others followed.

Gone.

Just like that.

Silence returned.

Heavy.

Real.

Elena didn't move.

Her hands were shaking now.

Her breath uneven.

Adrian stood still.

Then—

Slowly—

He turned.

His eyes went to her.

Not cold.

Not distant.

Focused.

"You okay?"

Her breath caught.

That question…

felt out of place.

After everything.

"I…"

Her voice failed.

He stepped closer.

Careful this time.

Not aggressive.

Not controlling.

"Look at me," he said quietly.

She did.

His hands moved.

Not grabbing.

Not holding.

Just checking.

Her arm.

Her shoulder.

"You're not hurt."

That sounded like relief.

"I'm fine," she whispered.

A pause.

Then—

"You shouldn't be here."

That hurt.

"You brought me here."

A pause.

Then—

"I know."

Silence.

"I can handle it," she said.

His gaze didn't move.

"No."

Her jaw tightened.

"Yes."

A step closer.

Her turn.

"I'm not weak."

"I didn't say you were."

"Then stop treating me like I am."

Silence.

That landed.

He studied her.

Longer this time.

Then—

"I don't protect weak people."

Her breath caught.

"I protect what matters."

Silence.

That changed everything.

Her heart raced.

"That's not the same thing," she said quietly.

"No," he agreed.

"It's worse."

A long pause.

The night felt different now.

Not just dangerous.

Personal.

She looked at him.

Really looked.

At what he did.

At what he was capable of.

"You're not normal," she said.

"No."

"But you're not lying either."

A pause.

Then—

"No."

Silence.

Her chest rose slowly.

"This doesn't scare me as much as it should."

His eyes darkened.

"It should."

"Maybe," she said.

A step closer.

"But it doesn't."

That shifted something.

Deep.

He stepped closer too.

Now there was no distance.

Again.

"You don't understand what you're standing next to," he said quietly.

Her voice softened.

"I do."

A pause.

"Then why are you still here?"

Silence.

Her heart beat faster.

Because she knew the answer.

And it wasn't logical.

"Because I trust you," she said.

That hit.

Hard.

For both of them.

His expression changed.

Just slightly.

But enough.

And for the first time—

He didn't look in control.
