Chapter 22 - CHAPTER 22 — Don’t Say That

The words stayed between them.

"Because I trust you."

Elena felt it the moment she said it.

Too honest.

Too exposed.

She didn't take it back.

Adrian didn't move.

Didn't speak.

He just looked at her.

And something changed.

Subtle.

But real.

"Don't say that."

Her breath caught.

"What?"

His voice dropped.

"That."

Silence.

"Why?" she asked quietly.

A pause.

Then—

"Because it's not true."

Her chest tightened.

"It is."

"No."

That came too fast.

Too sharp.

She frowned.

"You don't get to decide that."

A pause.

Then—

"Yes, I do."

Her jaw tightened.

"Why?"

Silence.

Longer this time.

Then—

"Because I'm not someone you trust."

That landed.

Hard.

Her chest tightened.

"You just protected me."

"That doesn't change anything."

"It does to me."

A pause.

Then—

"It shouldn't."

She stepped closer.

"You think I don't understand what you did back there?"

His gaze didn't move.

"I know exactly what you did."

Silence.

"And I'm still here."

That mattered.

More than anything.

He looked away.

For the second time.

That had never happened before.

"You don't know what that means," he said.

Her voice softened.

"Then tell me."

Silence.

Then—

"I don't protect people."

A pause.

"I control situations."

Her heart skipped.

"But you didn't control that," she said.

A beat.

Then—

"No."

Silence.

"That wasn't control," she added quietly.

His gaze returned.

"That was… something else."

A pause.

Then—

"Don't define it."

That made her breath catch.

"Why?"

His voice dropped.

"Because once you do…"

A step closer.

"…you won't be able to ignore it."

Silence.

That sounded like a warning.

Or a confession.

She didn't step back.

"I'm not trying to ignore anything," she said.

A pause.

"That's the problem."

He stepped closer again.

Now there was no space.

But this time—

It felt different.

Less dangerous.

More… real.

"You said you trust me," he said quietly.

"Yes."

A pause.

Then—

"Don't."

Her breath caught.

"Why?"

His voice lowered.

"Because I don't trust myself."

Silence.

That changed everything.

Her chest tightened.

That was the first real crack.

The first real truth.

She looked at him.

Really looked.

"You think you're going to hurt me," she said.

A pause.

Then—

"Yes."

No hesitation.

No denial.

Nothing.

Her heart skipped.

"And you still want me here?"

A beat.

Then—

"Yes."

That was worse.

Silence.

Her chest rose slowly.

"That doesn't make sense."

"I know."

She shook her head slightly.

"You're not helping your case."

A faint shift.

"I'm not trying to."

That made something soften.

Just a little.

She stepped closer.

Her turn.

"If you were going to hurt me," she said quietly,

"…you already would have."

Silence.

That landed.

He watched her.

Longer this time.

Then—

"That's not how it works."

Her voice stayed calm.

"Then how does it work?"

A pause.

Then—

"I don't stop once I start."

Her breath caught.

"That's not reassuring."

"No."

Silence.

But she didn't step back.

Didn't move.

"I'm still here," she said.

A pause.

Then—

"I know."

And for the first time…

That didn't sound like control.

It sounded like something else.

He lifted his hand.

Slowly.

Stopped near her face.

Not touching.

But close.

Too close.

"Don't trust me," he said quietly.

Her voice softened.

"I already do."

Silence.

That was it.

The line.

And they had just crossed it.
