Chapter 26 - CHAPTER 26 — Say It or Leave

The words didn't fade.

They stayed.

Heavy.

Unavoidable.

"I'm not leaving."

Elena felt it the moment she said it.

No escape now.

No distance.

Adrian didn't move.

Didn't speak.

But something in him shifted.

Dangerous.

"You don't understand what you're doing."

Her breath caught.

"Then explain it."

A pause.

Then—

"I won't."

That snapped something.

"Stop doing that," she said sharply.

"Doing what?"

"Pushing me away and pulling me back at the same time."

Silence.

That landed.

She stepped closer.

"You tell me to stay."

A step.

"Then you tell me to be careful."

Another step.

"You say I shouldn't trust you."

Closer.

"But you don't let me walk away."

Now there was no space.

"That's not fair."

A pause.

Then—

"I never said it was."

Her chest tightened.

"I'm not one of your situations to control."

His gaze darkened.

"I know."

"Then stop treating me like one."

Silence.

That was the problem.

He didn't answer.

Her voice dropped.

Softer now.

More real.

"What do you want from me?"

That question changed everything.

A long pause.

Then—

"You."

Her breath caught.

"That's not an answer."

"It is."

"No," she said.

Her voice shaking now.

"That's not enough."

Silence.

"You don't just get me," she continued.

"You don't get to keep me here without telling me what this is."

That hit.

Hard.

He stepped closer.

Slow.

Now they were too close again.

"This is a mistake," he said quietly.

Her heart tightened.

"Then why are you still here?"

A pause.

Then—

"Because I don't walk away from things I want."

Silence.

That was honest.

Too honest.

Her chest rose slowly.

"And what do you want?"

A beat.

Then—

"You."

Again.

But this time—

It sounded different.

Less control.

More… truth.

Her heart raced.

"That's not enough," she whispered.

A pause.

Then—

"What do you want me to say?"

Her voice broke slightly.

"Something real."

Silence.

Long.

Heavy.

He looked at her.

Really looked.

And for the first time…

He hesitated.

"I don't know what this is," he said.

Her breath caught.

"That's honest."

A pause.

"But I know I can't stop it."

Silence.

That was the closest thing to a confession.

Her chest tightened.

"That's not enough," she said again.

A pause.

Then—

"What do you need?"

Her voice dropped.

"Say it."

He didn't move.

"Say what?"

Her heart was racing.

Too fast.

Too real.

"That you feel something."

Silence.

That was it.

The line.

His jaw tightened.

His control slipping.

But not breaking.

"I don't say things like that."

Her chest dropped.

"Then I'm leaving."

That came fast.

Too fast.

She stepped back.

This time—

Really stepping away.

That changed everything.

He moved instantly.

Grabbed her wrist.

Not rough.

But firm.

Stopping her.

"Don't."

Her breath caught.

"Then say it."

Silence.

His grip tightened slightly.

Then—

Stopped.

He looked at her.

And for the first time—

He wasn't in control.

"I can't."

Her heart broke.

Just a little.

"Then let me go."

A pause.

Then—

"No."

Silence.

That was worse.

Much worse.

Her chest rose sharply.

"You don't get both."

His voice dropped.

"I know."

A pause.

"And I still won't let you go."

Silence.

That was it.

The truth.

Raw.

Unstable.

She looked at him.

Really looked.

At the control.

At the damage.

At the restraint.

And the thing he still refused to say.

"This is going to destroy us," she whispered.

A pause.

Then—

"Yes."

And neither of them moved.

Because now…

They both knew.

It already started.
