It was all a transaction; he wasn't a saint, nor would he be a soft-hearted pushover. He wouldn't save people who had no use, just like that radical old man bitten to death by zombies in the parking garage. If someone wanted to die, he wouldn't stop them.
"You truly are a bastard, as always!" Svetlana smiled charmingly. A man like him wasn't a good person, but he was the best man to provide for a family.
"I'll only selflessly dedicate myself to myself and my family. As for others, maybe one day when I'm feeling particularly benevolent, I'll help them too." Eddie's smile was shameless; selfishness wasn't a flaw.
Ada couldn't deny it either. She admired Eddie's approach. She wouldn't fall for a good person; that would just make her a widow sooner or later.
Returning to the subway station, after explaining his intentions to Mikhail, Mikhail wanted to send people to escort Eddie to University Town, but Eddie refused. The help of these mercenaries wasn't significant, and they would be a burden, so it was better to do without them.
"Then good luck, Eddie!" Mikhail suddenly saluted solemnly.
"Good luck to you too, Captain. Don't die before I get back. And, watch out for Nikolai." Eddie waved his hand and boarded the subway.
Eddie's words left Mikhail in deep thought. He reflected on why their troops encountered large-scale zombie attacks after engaging in battle, and why some original escape routes were directly sealed off. There must be an unknown secret behind it.
"Are you sowing discord among them?" Ada suddenly developed a strong curiosity about Eddie. She wanted to understand what kind of secrets this man was hiding.
"Sowing discord? There's no need for that. Mikhail is a seasoned veteran, and what he hates most are traitors. Do you think Umbrella would be so at ease with these people wandering around Raccoon City with dozens of mercenaries? Some of them have already been recruited as internal observers, recording combat data between mercenaries and bioweapons. If they return and report, they'll receive money." Eddie explained.
"Are you also an observer?" Ada showed a playful smile.
"Trying to buy me off? Umbrella isn't qualified. A broken ship like that, I wouldn't throw my life away for a little bit of petty gain." Eddie's tone was extremely disdainful. He didn't care for such meager money.
"That's true. I thought you'd do anything." Ada smiled, easing the awkward atmosphere.
Wolf Mom Luper was controlling the train at the front. She saw an anomaly ahead; there seemed to be a giant cockroach blocking the tunnel. This enormous cockroach even occupied the entire train passage, and there were many calf-sized cockroaches around it.
Their disgusting appearance made people's scalps tingle. Once these filthy creatures from the sewers grew large, they truly instilled an instinctive fear.
"Eddie, we have trouble. There are large giant cockroaches blocking the way ahead, and they've already spotted us." Wolf Mom Luper reported after the train stopped.
"Then just blow them up, don't be polite. Claire, it's up to you. Here, can you use this?" Eddie took a rocket launcher from the weapon box and handed it over.
"This is good stuff. I should be able to use it. It's not convenient here; I need to get on the roof of the train." Claire nodded, picked up the rocket launcher, and prepared to go out.
"No need, just fire from here." Eddie kicked hard, sending the windshield of the driver's cab flying. As long as she stood here and fired, she could hit the large cockroach ahead.
"Alright, this is pretty crazy." Claire laughed, placing the rocket launcher on her shoulder, pressing her eye to the scope, and firing a shot at the giant cockroach in the distance.
Boom! The giant cockroach couldn't withstand the rocket launcher's blast; half of its body was blown off. However, the infected cockroach's vitality was extremely tenacious, and it still shrieked incessantly, rushing forward to try and prey.
"Keep going, don't stop, give it another shot. Everyone else, use assault rifles to kill those cockroaches. Don't let them get close, they're disgusting to look at." Eddie picked up a submachine gun, taking down one cockroach with each shot. As long as their heads were blown off, these cockroaches would lose their mobility. Whether they died or not didn't matter; they could survive for days without a head.
Bang bang bang! Gunshots rang out in the carriage. Everyone was a sharpshooter. While not hitting every time, nothing within fifty meters was ever missed.
Even a novice like Emma, with the serum's enhancement, experienced almost no recoil from the firearms and wouldn't have her arms shake, causing the gun to wobble and lose aim.
The weakened T-Virus provided Emma and the others with the most stable physical template, and their enhanced physical qualities could withstand stronger modifications.
"Eddie, use this gun; it can deal with those cockroaches faster." Emma handed over the repaired electromagnetic gun.
Eddie took the electromagnetic gun and fired a shot at the giant cockroach's head. The entire underground tunnel glowed with blue light. The dazzling blue light blew off the cockroach's head.
He fired another shot, another bullet with a blue light trail, piercing the cockroach's heart. Combined with Claire's rocket launcher, the blocking cockroach was quickly killed.
Chapter 238: Has Your Heart Been Stirred?
As soon as they returned to University Town, they saw the muscular Thanatos Tyrant walking out. There wasn't a single zombie around; any who dared to block its path, whether zombies or out-of-control Hunters, would be swatted to death with a single slap. No quarter was given; if one slap wasn't enough, then two.
"Oh, has it been repaired? Hmph, January, go check what Umbrella and the Federal military are doing." Eddie keenly noticed the difference.
"Received. I'm checking, it will take some time." January's voice came through the earpiece. You could even hear Suzuki Yoko asking her what coffee she wanted, indicating she was indeed living a comfortable life.
The group arrived at Raccoon City University Town and immediately encountered members of the Echo Six Team. Both sides put down their weapons; there was no need for them to confront each other if they weren't enemies.
"Eddie, what are you doing here?" Captain Jettingham walked over and asked.
"Stop, don't come any closer!" Halfway there, Jettingham had a gun pointed at him. VECTOR strangely appeared from thin air. This was a short-term invisibility cloak developed by Umbrella, adapted from the survival principles of a unique lizard. This was just a prototype, and the only one of its kind.
"VECTOR, put the gun down. They are not enemies." Wolf Mom Luper ordered.
VECTOR put the gun down. For some reason, he felt that the guy in front of him looked a bit familiar.
"We're here to make a vaccine. Umbrella hired some death row inmates and mercenaries to work for them. Now they've realized they're being used as guinea pigs. If you want to collect evidence, they're the best people to ask." Eddie said calmly.
"You can make a vaccine?" Jettingham asked in surprise, then felt like he'd asked a foolish question. Weren't the vaccines they were using made by him?
"That's a difficult question for me to answer." Eddie shrugged.
"Our captain is just joking, handsome. Do you need us to escort you inside?" Sienna stepped forward to defuse the situation. Her short, golden hair made her look heroic and spirited.
"No need, I can protect him." Wolf Mom Luper felt some aversion towards women like Sienna; a frivolous woman didn't match the steady Wolf Mother.
"What are you doing here?" Eddie raised an eyebrow, speaking as he walked.
"We're here to find a professor named Peter. He has a sunlight vaccine that can cure the T-Virus." Sienna didn't hide anything. She always felt that the man in front of her could help her.
"Then go find him. Actually, most vaccines are pretty similar. You'd better hurry; he might already be a zombie's dinner. If fate allows, I'll see you later." Eddie waved his hand at the team members with his back to them, disappearing into the building with Ada and the others.
"That guy's pretty cool." Demolitions expert Marisa whistled, her expression a little funny.
"Falling for him? Why didn't you ask for his number?" Sienna teased.
"Forget it. Being handsome doesn't put food on the table. I still think explosives are more fun." Marisa wasn't buying it. Not everyone yearned for love, and there were quite a few who were happy to be single.
Eddie arrived at the biology building and began making the vaccine in the laboratory there.
While Eddie was making the vaccine, Claire was using a silenced pistol to systematically eliminate wandering zombies. She needed to practice more to maintain a good feel.
Ada, however, was pacing around the laboratory, looking through things. She had already obtained the G-Virus sample, and now all she had to do was leave Raccoon City.
Although Ada had many ways to leave Raccoon City, which had become a zombie paradise, she still chose to act with Eddie. It would be much safer and more interesting.
Meanwhile, at The Pentagon, Simmons had just learned that his rival was using his power to search for a T-Virus vaccine. Dr. Mueller was unaware of how to make the vaccine. He needed to create the Thanatos Tyrant, so he entrusted the method to his good friend, university professor Peter, for research.
With the relevant equations, research wasn't difficult, but it still required time, and time was what they lacked now.
"Ka Udoji, send a team of special forces to find a guy named Eddie Cai. He's an Umbrella researcher. Find him, bring him back. He has the vaccine's manufacturing method and data. We can't let that old geezer Morgan get ahead of us." Simmons ordered.
"No problem, leave it to me. I'll bring him back. What if he resists?" Ka Udoji asked.
"Then kill him!" Simmons said coldly.
At the same time, in distant Europe, at Tricell's research headquarters, William Birkin arrived. This was his first day at his new employer.
"Call everyone over. I need to assign research tasks." William said calmly. This was a brand new environment, much better than when he was at Umbrella.
