Chapter 5: What Remains
---
The silence stayed.
---
Even after the beast left… it didn't feel like anything had ended.
---
Aren stood where he was, staring into the darkness long after the creature had disappeared.
Half-expecting it to return.
Half-hoping it wouldn't.
---
It didn't.
---
Slowly… the tension in his body began to loosen.
---
Then everything hit at once.
---
His legs gave out.
---
He dropped to his knees.
---
Ash rose around him in a soft cloud as his hands hit the ground.
---
"…it's gone," he muttered.
---
Nara didn't respond immediately.
She was still watching the tree line, her spear lowered but not relaxed.
Only after several long seconds did she finally exhale.
---
"…yeah."
---
Her voice was quieter now.
Less sharp.
---
Aren let out a shaky breath.
---
His chest still felt tight.
Not from fear this time.
---
From something heavier.
---
He looked down.
At the ash beneath his hands.
---
This used to be home.
---
His fingers curled slightly.
---
"…everyone's gone."
---
The words came out flat.
---
Like he didn't fully believe them yet.
---
Nara glanced at him.
---
She didn't interrupt.
Didn't try to comfort him.
---
She just let him sit there.
---
That, somehow, made it worse.
---
Aren swallowed.
Hard.
---
"I didn't even…" he started, then stopped.
---
Didn't even what?
---
Say goodbye?
Save anyone?
Understand what was happening?
---
None of it sounded right.
---
The system flickered faintly—
---
[State: Unstable]
[Mental Strain Detected]
---
Aren squeezed his eyes shut.
---
"…shut up."
---
Nara heard that.
---
"…it talks?" she asked.
---
Aren opened his eyes slowly.
---
"…I don't know."
---
That was the truth.
---
He didn't know what it was.
Didn't know why it was there.
Didn't know why it chose him.
---
Nara studied him for a moment.
---
"…that thing earlier," she said. "The way it looked at you."
---
Aren didn't respond.
---
"…that wasn't normal."
---
"…I figured."
---
A brief pause.
---
Then Nara walked over, stopping a short distance from him.
---
"You can stand?" she asked.
---
Aren nodded slowly.
---
"…I think so."
---
It took effort.
More than it should have.
---
His muscles ached.
His chest still felt tight from earlier.
---
That "reinforcement"—
---
It had cost him.
---
He steadied himself, brushing ash off his hands.
---
"…you said those things were called Spirit Beasts."
---
Nara nodded.
---
"Yeah."
---
"…and Wardens fight them?"
---
"Protect villages from them," she corrected. "Or try to."
---
Aren let out a quiet breath.
---
"…so where were you before all this?"
---
Nara's expression shifted slightly.
---
"…too far."
---
Not an answer.
---
But not a lie either.
---
Aren didn't push.
---
Instead, his gaze drifted back to the ruins.
---
"…what about the ones who attacked?"
---
Nara's eyes hardened again.
---
"…hunters."
---
"…what do they want with me?"
---
This time—
She hesitated.
---
Just for a second.
---
"…people like you aren't supposed to exist."
---
Aren's chest tightened again.
---
"…people like me?"
---
Nara didn't answer immediately.
---
Instead, she reached down and picked up her spear, checking the tip briefly before resting it against her shoulder.
---
"…I've only heard stories," she said finally. "About something called Ashborn."
---
The word felt heavier now.
---
Real.
---
"…and?"
---
Nara glanced at him.
---
"…and they never ended well."
---
That wasn't comforting.
---
Aren let out a quiet breath.
---
"…great."
---
For a moment, neither of them spoke.
---
The wind shifted slightly, carrying the faint smell of smoke across the ruins.
---
Aren's stomach twisted.
---
"…what happens now?"
---
Nara didn't hesitate this time.
---
"We leave."
---
Aren blinked.
---
"…just like that?"
---
"…you want to stay?" she asked, raising an eyebrow.
---
Aren looked around.
At the ash.
At what used to be everything.
---
Then shook his head.
---
"…no."
---
"Then we move."
---
Simple.
Direct.
---
That was how she spoke.
---
Aren hesitated.
---
"…where?"
---
Nara adjusted the strap on her shoulder.
---
"…nearest settlement."
---
"…and then?"
---
This time—
She paused.
---
"…then we figure out why people are hunting you."
---
Aren let out a breath.
---
That didn't sound simple at all.
---
The system flickered again—
---
[Objective Updated]
[Survive]
---
Aren almost laughed.
---
"…yeah," he muttered. "That sounds about right."
---
Nara glanced at him.
---
"…you ready?"
---
Aren looked back one last time.
---
At the ashes.
At the silence.
At everything he didn't understand.
---
"…no," he said honestly.
---
Then—
After a moment—
---
"…but let's go anyway."
---
Nara nodded once.
---
And together—
They left.
---
Behind them, the ash shifted slightly in the wind.
---
And beneath it—
Faint.
Almost invisible—
---
A small ember glowed.
Then faded.
