The town looked ordinary at first glance.
Small houses lined the narrow streets. A few vendors had already set up their stalls, their voices blending with the low hum of morning activity. Smoke drifted lazily from chimneys, and the smell of cooked food hung in the air.
But something felt… wrong.
Leo slowed his steps slightly, his eyes moving from one corner to another.
People were walking.
Talking.
Living their normal lives.
And yet there was a tension beneath it.
"…Something's off " Leo said quietly.
Aldric didn't respond immediately.
But his gaze had already shifted.
He had noticed it too.
A man standing near a shop wasn't buying anything.
Another had stopped a passerby, asking questions in a low voice.
Two more stood near the inn, pretending to talk but their eyes kept scanning the street.
They weren't townspeople.
They were searching.
"…They're here " Aldric said under his breath.
Leo's chest tightened.
"…Already?" he asked.
Aldric's expression hardened.
"They spread out " he said quietly."They're covering every nearby place we could've reached."
Leo followed his gaze.
One of the men had just turned, his eyes briefly sweeping across the street
almost in their direction.
Leo immediately looked away.
"…What do we do?" he asked.
Aldric took a slow breath.
"We walk," he said.
Leo frowned.
"…Walk?"
"If we run, we stand out " Aldric replied."If we panic, we're caught."
His voice was calm.
But there was tension beneath it.
"Stay close " he added.
Leo didn't argue.
They began moving again.
Step by step.
Trying to look like nothing more than two ordinary travelers.
Leo kept his head slightly lowered, but his eyes didn't stop observing.
Every movement around him felt louder now.
Every voice sharper.
One of the men laughed loudly somewhere behind them.
Another called out to someone near a stall.
Normal sounds.
But Leo knew none of this was normal.
They passed by a fruit stall.
A woman glanced at them briefly before looking away.
Too quickly.
Leo noticed.
But he said nothing.
Aldric's pace didn't change.
Not too fast.
Not too slow.
Controlled.
"…There's an inn ahead " he murmured.
Leo followed his line of sight.
A modest building stood at the corner, its wooden sign swinging lightly in the breeze.
Two men stood near its entrance.
Not talking.
Not moving.
Watching.
Leo felt a slight chill run down his spine.
"…We can't go there " he said quietly.
"I know " Aldric replied.
They kept walking.
One turn.
Then another.
Trying to move away without drawing attention.
But the deeper they went into the town the more it became clear.
They weren't just searching one place.
They were everywhere.
A man stepped out of a house ahead.
Another appeared at the end of the street behind them.
Leo's steps slowed for a fraction of a second.
"…They're closing in " he said.
Aldric's jaw tightened slightly.
"I see it."
For a moment
there was no clear path left.
Running would expose them.
Standing still would trap them.
They were being pushed.
Slowly.
Deliberately.
Into a corner.
Leo's fingers curled slightly.
Not in fear but in tension.
"…What now?" he asked.
Aldric didn't answer immediately.
His eyes scanned the surroundings one more time.
Then very slightly
his direction changed.
"…This way " he said.
Leo followed without hesitation.
They turned into a narrower street.
Quieter.
Less crowded.
But that only made it worse.
Because now
there were fewer places to hide.
A door creaked open somewhere behind them.
Leo didn't look back.
But he knew.
They were being watched.
Step by step the space around them tightened.
And then
A voice came from ahead.
"…Stop."
Both of them froze.
A man stood in the middle of the path.
Not pretending.
Not hiding.
Just waiting.
Leo's heartbeat rose sharply.
Aldric's expression turned cold.
Behind them
footsteps.
More than one.
They had been surrounded.
Leo slowly lifted his gaze.
The man ahead took a step forward.
A faint smile appeared on his face.
"…Found you," he said.
The air grew heavy.
And for the first time
there was no easy way out.
----------
"…Found you."
The words settled heavily in the air.
Leo didn't move.
His heartbeat grew louder in his ears, each beat sharper than the last.
Aldric stepped slightly forward, just enough to place himself between Leo and the man ahead.
Behind them, footsteps echoed through the narrow street.
Slow.
Measured.
Leo didn't need to turn to know.
They were surrounded.
"…Stay behind me," Aldric said quietly.
Leo didn't argue this time.
The man ahead tilted his head slightly, studying them.
A faint smile rested on his lips, but there was nothing friendly about it.
"You made us walk quite a distance," he said casually."Our leader won't be pleased."
Aldric didn't respond.
The man took another step forward.
"But then again…" he continued, his eyes narrowing slightly,"…he'll be even less pleased if we return without you."
The men behind them shifted.
Closing the gap.
Leo's eyes moved quickly.
Front.
Back.
Sides.
No open path.
"…Aldric," Leo said quietly.
"I know," Aldric replied.
For a brief moment, everything went still.
Then
Aldric moved.
Not forward.
Not backward.
Sideways.
He grabbed Leo's arm and pulled him sharply toward a narrow gap between two houses.
"Run."
Leo didn't hesitate.
They dashed into the tight passage, their footsteps echoing loudly against the walls.
"After them!" a voice shouted behind.
The sound of pursuit followed immediately.
The passage twisted unexpectedly, forcing them to slow slightly to avoid crashing into the walls.
Loose stones shifted under their feet.
Dust rose into the air.
Leo's breathing grew heavier.
His legs burned.
But he kept going.
"Don't stop!" Aldric said.
The passage opened suddenly into a small courtyard.
Leo's eyes widened for a split second.
Dead end.
A wooden fence stood at the far side.
Tall.
Old.
"…We're trapped," Leo said.
"No," Aldric replied.
Without slowing, he grabbed a loose plank from the fence and kicked against it with what strength he had left.
The wood cracked.
Once.
Twice.
On the third strike, it broke open just enough.
"Go!"
Leo squeezed through the gap, ignoring the sharp edges scraping against his arms.
Aldric followed right behind him.
They stumbled out into another street.
Different.
Less crowded.
But not safe.
Voices echoed nearby.
"They're heading that way!"
Leo's chest tightened again.
"They're everywhere," he said.
Aldric didn't respond.
He grabbed Leo again and pulled him toward a group of moving carts.
"Stay close."
They slipped between the carts, using them as cover.
For a moment
just a moment
they were hidden.
A man rushed past on the other side, his eyes scanning wildly.
Leo held his breath.
The man didn't notice.
"…Move," Aldric whispered.
They continued along the carts, then turned sharply into another street.
Their pace slowed slightly.
Not running.
Not walking too fast.
Trying to blend in.
Leo's legs trembled slightly now.
Not from fear
but exhaustion.
"…How far?" he asked.
"Not far enough," Aldric replied.
They kept moving.
The noise behind them slowly faded.
Not completely.
But enough.
Enough to breathe.
Enough to think.
After a few more turns, they finally reached the edge of the town.
Fields stretched ahead.
Open.
Wide.
Leo stopped for a moment, his chest rising and falling heavily.
"…Did we lose them?" he asked.
Aldric looked back once.
Long.
Careful.
"…For now," he said.
Leo exhaled slowly.
For the first time since entering the town
the pressure eased.
But only slightly.
Because both of them knew
This wasn't over.
Not even close.
Aldric turned his gaze forward again.
"We keep moving," he said.
Leo nodded.
And without another word
they stepped out of the town.
Leaving behind the hunt that had almost caught them.
But not escaping it.
