Chapter 5 - Chapter 3 — The Golden Cage and the

Silent Goodbye

The Discussion:

The news of the contract brings a strange tension into the apartment. Amit looks at Nandini, his eyes filled with a mix of pride and a growing, restless anxiety.

Amit: "Nandini, I have to tell you something. I've been offered a major career opportunity in Mumbai. It's the break I've been waiting for, but... the timing couldn't be worse."

Nandini: (Stunned) "Mumbai? But Amit, I just got this offer with De Cruz Fashion! Arka told me the company provides an apartment for their lead models to ensure 'security and proximity' to the studios. I was just about to tell you that I have to move into the company housing."

The Arrival:

Before Amit can respond, there is a buzz at the door. A man in a professional uniform stands there, holding a set of keys and a sleek leather folder. Behind him, parked at the curb, is a brand-new, high-end luxury car.

Driver: "Miss Nandini? This is a gift from the Chairman, Mr. Aditya De Cruz. He believes the face of the company should travel in a manner that reflects the brand's prestige. Here are the keys and the registration."

Nandini: (Backing away, her face pale) "No... I can't accept this. It's too much. Tell that rude guy—I mean, the Chairman—that I don't need a car. I can take the bus or a cab."

Driver: (Firmly, as if programmed) "I am sorry, Miss, but I have strict orders. The car is already registered in your name. My job is finished."

He places the keys on the side table and walks away before she can protest further.

The Breaking Point:

The room goes silent. Amit looks at the keys, then at the luxury car outside, and finally at Nandini. The gap between her new world and his ordinary life suddenly feels like an ocean.

Amit: (His voice tight) "A company apartment... a luxury car... all from a 'Chairman' who you say is a monster? It looks more like he's buying you, Nandini."

Nandini: "Amit, stop! I didn't ask for any of this! I don't even want it!"

But the jealousy is a poison. Amit doesn't argue. He just looks at her one last time with a look she can't decipher and walks out.

The Letter:

The next morning, Nandini wakes up to an empty apartment. Amit's bags are gone. On the kitchen table lies a single white envelope.

Nandini,

I saw the way the world opened up for you yesterday. That car, that apartment... they represent a road I can't walk on yet. I realized that if I stay, my jealousy and my small-town fears will only become an obstacle in your path. I don't want to be the reason you stumble.

I've decided to go to Mumbai to focus on my own career. I need to become someone who can stand beside you without feeling small. I'm so sorry for my behavior and the things I said. I was jealous, and I shouldn't have been.

Focus on your career. Become the star you were meant to be.

With love, Amit.

The Aftermath:

Nandini collapses onto the chair, the letter trembling in her hand. She is alone. No Amit. Just a luxury car she didn't want and a contract with a man who makes her heart stop in terror.

And across the city, in his cold office, Aditya De Cruz watches the GPS tracker on the car activate. He feels a faint, rhythmic thud in his chest. The obstacle is gone. The cage is ready.

The Move: Isolation in the Clouds

The transition was a blur. One day Nandini was sharing a small, warm space with Amit, and the next, she was standing in the middle of a cold, minimalist penthouse on the 42nd floor. The walls were glass, overlooking the city of Kolkata like a silent, indifferent observer.

The silence was the loudest thing in the room. No Amit. No familiar smells of home. Just the clinical scent of expensive lilies and the low, mechanical hum of the central air conditioning. Nandini stood by the marble counter, her fingers trembling as she read Amit's letter for the hundredth time.

"I saw the way the world opened up for you yesterday... that car, that apartment... they represent a road I can't walk on yet."

"Mumbai... you really left, Amit," she whispered, her voice breaking. "You didn't even give me a chance to say no."

She looked down at the keys resting on the counter. The logo of the luxury car shimmered under the recessed lighting. It didn't feel like a gift; it felt like a shackle.

The Observation: Eyes in the Dark

Miles away, in the dark sanctum of the De Cruz tower, Aditya stood in front of a digital monitor. It showed a small, pulsing red dot: the GPS from Nandini's car, parked safely in the basement of her new building.

Samuel stood behind him, his eyes flickering with a faint, sharp intensity. "He's gone. The boyfriend took a train to Mumbai four hours ago. She's completely alone now, Aditya. Is this what you wanted?"

Aditya didn't turn around. He placed his hand over his chest, feeling a strange, rhythmic thud that only happened when he thought of her. "I didn't make him leave, Samuel. His own insecurity did that. I simply provided the light that made his shadows feel too dark."

"You're playing a dangerous game," Samuel warned. "She has no idea who she is. If that heartbeat gets any stronger, it might actually kill the machine you've spent thirty years building."

Aditya's lips curled into a chilling smirk. "Then it's a beautiful way to die."

The Encounter: The Defiant Signature

Nandini didn't wait for her "official" call the next morning. The weight of those keys in her pocket was a brand of shame she couldn't carry. She arrived at the De Cruz Headquarters not in the silver beast Aditya had sent, but in a dusty, yellow Kolkata taxi. She marched past the glass lobby, her eyes burning with a mix of grief and fury.

She found them in the private executive lounge. Arka was there, spread out with fabric swatches, looking surprised to see her so early. Aditya stood by the window, a cold silhouette against the morning sun.

"Arka, I need to talk to your brother. Now," Nandini demanded, her voice vibrating with rage.

"Nandini? What's wrong?" Arka asked, confused. "Did something happen at the apartment?"

"Ask him!" Nandini pointed at Aditya. "Ask the 'Chairman' why he thinks he can buy my life with expensive toys like I'm some charity case!"

She marched straight into Aditya's personal space. As she stepped within inches of him, the air seemed to thin. For Nandini, it was pure anger. But for Aditya...

The second she stepped within three feet of him, the silent void in his chest shattered. His heart, a machine that had been still for thirty years, began to race against time itself. A violent, rhythmic thud echoed in his ears—each beat faster than the last, fueled entirely by her proximity.

"You're early, Nandini," Aditya said, his voice dangerously calm despite the roar in his ears. "And you look... ungrateful."

CLACK. Nandini slammed the keys onto the marble table. "Take them back! I am a model, not a possession. I agreed to work for Arka because I respected his vision. I didn't agree to be 'sponsored' by a man who doesn't know how to speak to people properly!"

Arka stared at the keys in shock. "Bhaiya? You gave her a car? You didn't tell me."

"The car is for the brand's image," Aditya said, his eyes locked onto Nandini's. "If the face of De Cruz is seen in a common taxi, it devalues my investment. It's business."

"Then find another investment!" Nandini cried. "My boyfriend left for Mumbai because of the pressure your 'gifts' created! You've ruined the only thing that kept me happy, and you think a luxury car makes up for it?"

Aditya stepped even closer, towering over her. His heart was drumming so hard against his ribs he felt it might break. "If a man leaves you because of a car, he wasn't worth keeping. Stop crying over small-town boys and start acting like the queen Arka thinks you are."

"I hate you, Aditya De Cruz," she whispered, tears of fury in her eyes. "I hate everything you stand for!"

Aditya's smirk was dark and twisted. "Good. Hate is a much more honest emotion than respect. It has more... pulse."

"Aditya, that's enough," Samuel called out from the doorway, sensing the erratic vibration of Aditya's vitals.

Nandini turned to Arka, her voice breaking. "I'll do the shoot, Arka. For you. But tell your brother to stay away from me. If I see those keys again, I'm walking out. I am not for sale."

She stormed out, leaving the room vibrating with her exit. Aditya slumped into his chair, his hand gripping the armrest until the leather groaned, feeling the terrifying, beautiful rhythm of his racing heart slowly settle as she moved away...
