Chapter 3 - The world beyond Spirits

The first thing Nyx noticed was the silence.

Not the quiet kind he knew from the forest at night. That silence had life in it. Leaves shifting. Creatures breathing. The distant sound of water moving.

This one felt different.

Heavy.

Like the world itself was holding its breath.

Then came the pressure.

It pressed down on him from everywhere at once. Not just on his body, but deeper than that. It was in his chest, his bones, even his thoughts. Like something invisible was trying to crush him into the ground.

Nyx staggered.

His legs gave in for a second before he caught himself.

"…What is this…"

His voice came out rough, almost unfamiliar to his own ears.

He hadn't spoken much before. There had never been a reason to.

He looked around slowly.

The forest was gone.

No trees.

No shadows moving between branches.

No Kuro.

His chest tightened at that.

He didn't understand why, but the absence felt wrong.

What replaced it was something he couldn't make sense of.

The ground beneath his feet looked like stone, but it wasn't still. It pulsed faintly, like something alive beneath the surface. Each step he took sent a soft vibration back into his body.

The sky stretched endlessly above him, but it wasn't blue.

It moved.

Colors shifted constantly, blending into each other like liquid. Deep violet melted into gold, then into something darker that seemed to swallow light itself.

Nyx stared at it for a moment too long.

It made his head hurt.

He looked down again, focusing.

Trying to stay steady.

"…Kuro?"

The name slipped out before he could stop it.

Nothing answered.

A small part of him had expected that.

Still… it didn't feel right.

A faint distortion appeared in front of him.

At first, it looked like heat rising from the ground.

Then it bent.

Twisted.

Like space itself was folding.

Nyx tensed.

His body reacted before his mind could catch up.

They stepped out of it.

The same beings from the forest.

Tall.

Unnatural.

Their forms didn't feel solid. It was like they existed in more than one place at once. Their outlines shifted slightly if you stared too long.

Their eyes… were the worst part.

Too calm.

Too deep.

Like they were looking through him instead of at him.

Nyx took a step back.

Just one.

"You adapted faster than expected."

The voice appeared in his head.

Clear.

Cold.

It didn't echo. It didn't feel like sound.

It just… existed.

Nyx frowned.

He didn't like that.

"…Where is this?"

He forced the words out, steadying his breathing.

One of the beings stepped forward.

"This place does not have a name your world would understand."

A slight pause.

"You may call it the Aether Realm."

Nyx repeated it silently.

Aether.

It didn't mean anything to him.

But it felt important.

His eyes shifted again.

"…Kuro is not here."

The being looked at him for a moment.

"The creature you bonded with cannot exist in this realm."

Nyx's fingers tightened slightly.

He didn't know why that bothered him.

It just did.

He swallowed it.

"…Why did you bring me here?"

This time, the air itself seemed to grow heavier.

The other beings moved closer, forming a loose circle around him.

Not threatening.

But not friendly either.

"You were rejected by your world."

Nyx's eyes flickered.

A memory surfaced.

Cold floors.

Voices.

The feeling of being… unwanted.

"…Because I have no spirit."

The being tilted its head slightly.

"Yes."

A pause.

"Which is why you are here."

Nyx frowned.

That didn't make sense.

"…Then I'm weak."

Silence.

For a brief moment…

The pressure around him shifted.

"You are incorrect."

Nyx blinked.

"You are not empty."

The being stepped closer.

Close enough that Nyx could feel something coming off it.

Power.

Pure and heavy.

Nothing like anything he had ever felt before.

"You are unbound."

The words settled into him.

Slowly.

"…I don't understand."

"In your world, power is given."

"Spirits choose their hosts."

"They define limits."

A small pause.

"You have no such limits."

Nyx stared at them.

His breathing slowed.

"…So I can become strong?"

The question came out simple.

But it carried everything inside him.

The being watched him for a long moment.

Then—

"Yes."

Something inside Nyx went quiet.

Not empty.

Not cold.

Focused.

Good.

The ground beneath him cracked suddenly.

Nyx didn't even have time to react.

His balance gave out instantly.

His body slammed into the ground.

Hard.

Pain shot through his arm.

Sharp enough to make his teeth clench.

"What—"

"Stand."

The command cut through everything.

Nyx froze.

Then slowly…

He pushed himself up.

His arm trembled.

Pain spread through it with every movement.

But he ignored it.

He stood.

And the moment he did…

The pressure doubled.

Nyx's knees buckled instantly.

He dropped again.

This time harder.

His breath caught in his throat.

It felt like something massive was crushing him from every direction.

His chest tightened.

Breathing became difficult.

"What… is this…"

"No spirit supports you here."

Nyx's vision blurred slightly.

"In your world, even the weakest are sustained by their Guardian Spirit."

"You have lived your entire life without feeling true weight."

Nyx gritted his teeth.

"This is your beginning."

His body screamed at him to stay down.

Every muscle burned.

Every breath hurt.

For a moment…

He stayed there.

Then his fingers twitched.

"…No."

The word came out low.

But clear.

He pressed his hands against the ground.

His arms shook violently.

He pushed.

Nothing.

His body collapsed again.

Silence.

They watched him.

Without moving.

Without helping.

Nyx lay there.

Breathing hard.

His body hurt.

Badly.

For the first time in years…

He felt weak.

But something inside him didn't accept it.

He tried again.

This time harder.

His arms trembled worse than before.

His muscles felt like they were tearing.

But he didn't stop.

Slowly…

Very slowly…

He lifted himself.

His knees dragged against the ground.

His back bent under the pressure.

But he kept moving.

Up.

Up.

Until—

He stood.

Barely.

But standing.

The pressure didn't go away.

It got worse.

But Nyx didn't fall.

His breathing was uneven.

His body shaking.

But his eyes…

Stayed steady.

The being watched him in silence.

"…Good."

Nyx didn't respond.

He couldn't.

But inside…

Something shifted.

He understood now.

Not everything.

But enough.

This place wasn't going to protect him.

It wasn't going to guide him.

It was going to break him.

And if he didn't adapt…

He would die.

Nyx took a slow breath.

Then another.

And straightened slightly.

"I'll get stronger."

The words came out quiet.

But certain.

Not for them.

Not for anything else.

Just for himself.

The air around him trembled slightly.

And for the first time…

Deep within his chest…

Something flickered.

Not a spirit.

Something else.

Something that did not belong to this world.
