The energy in the hospital was different now. The frantic energy from the code pink was long behind me, muffled by the walls, and all staff seemed to be laser focused on going to the maternity ward. No one was looking after the VIP ward at all.
And no one was watching room 804.
I pushed the door open without knocking very gently. Liam was sitting there on the bed playing a Nintendo switch like he didn't have a care in the world, looking absurdly comfortable. His upper body was unharmed save for a few fading bruises, but his right leg was in a thick plaster elevated on a pillow. A metal cage frame surrounded the leg with pins and rods. My eyes were drawn to the extra thick padding around his groin where my boot had stomped on his balls. He was almost pathetic to look at.
On the wall behind him, the heart monitor blinked, so I walked over and pressed the large, red button on its side. The screen went black, the beeping ceasing instantly. The silence filled the room.
