I skipped class the next morning to go straight to the library. This school boasted an extensive and impressive collection, and I wasn't surprised to find at least ten books on demonic lore. I flipped through page upon page of ridiculous summoning rituals and outlandish, most likely true tales from hell. It was like reading a storybook until I finally found something about contract demons.
According to the book I found, demons like Darius didn't consume the body in a literal physical sense. They fed on the body, the spirit, and the flesh in a more spiritual manner, drawing strength from the life force and residual energy. The more corrupted and sinful the soul consumed is, the more powerful the demon becomes.
A wave of relief washed over me.
Thank fucking god I hadn't eaten human meat! The steak was just a perfectly cooked and seasoned steak! The thought alone lifted fifty pounds off my stomach, and I suddenly felt a pang of hunger.
