Chapter 13 - Split Instinct

The tremor came again.

Harder this time.

The ground beneath Kai cracked slightly, dust lifting into the air like it had lost trust in gravity.

His eyes sharpened.

"…Something's coming."

The girl stepped closer, clutching his sleeve.

"Kai… I don't like this."

Kai didn't respond.

Because his attention wasn't outside anymore.

It was inside.

Two systems.

Two voices.

And something new…

The synchronization bar in his vision pulsed faintly:

[Synchronization Progress: 12% → 18%]

Kai frowned.

"…That's increasing."

The System responded.

"…External stimulus detected."

The fragment inside him whispered at the same time.

"…Conflict approaching."

Kai's eyes narrowed.

"…Good."

Because whatever was coming…

It was about to test exactly what he was becoming.

Then—

They arrived.

From the ruins ahead.

Three figures.

Not infected.

Not monsters.

Humanoid.

Armored.

Controlled.

Their movements were synchronized. Precise. Like soldiers.

But their eyes…

Empty.

Not like the Infected.

Worse.

Like something had already claimed them.

The middle one stepped forward.

Its voice was cold.

Mechanical.

"Target confirmed."

Kai's body tensed.

"…Target?"

The soldier tilted its head.

"Designation: Bridge Candidate."

Kai froze.

The girl whispered, "They know you…"

The System flickered.

"External System entity detected."

Kai's eyes sharpened.

"…Of course."

The soldier raised its hand.

"Extraction protocol initiated."

The air shifted.

Pressure dropped.

Kai felt it immediately.

Not just a fight.

This was a retrieval.

The shards around him reacted instantly, accelerating into position—

But this time…

They didn't move as one.

One shard flickered forward—

But another hesitated.

Then split.

Kai's eyes widened slightly.

"…No."

The System reacted:

"Warning: Command instability."

The fragment inside him whispered:

"…You are divided."

Kai clenched his fist.

"…Not yet."

The soldiers moved.

Fast.

One lunged from the left.

Another from above.

Kai reacted.

The shards shot forward—

But instead of one unified strike…

They responded differently.

Some followed the System.

Others followed the fragment.

The result?

Chaos.

But controlled chaos.

Kai twisted his body, barely dodging the first attack. A shard—aligned with the System—slashed upward, forcing one soldier back.

Another shard—faster, sharper—came from the fragment's influence, striking from an angle Kai didn't consciously choose.

Kai blinked.

"…Wait."

He moved again.

This time deliberately.

Testing.

And the result hit him like a blade.

He wasn't just controlling shards.

He was controlling two different instincts at once.

Two strategies.

Two reactions.

Two ways of thinking.

His breathing steadied.

"…I see."

The girl watched, confused but amazed.

"Kai… you're moving differently…"

Kai didn't answer.

Because now…

He understood the problem.

And the advantage.

He raised his hand.

"…System."

"…Yes, Host."

Then, quietly—

"…Fragment."

The second voice responded.

"…I am here."

Kai's eyes sharpened.

"…Work with me."

For a moment—

Silence.

Then—

Both voices responded.

At the same time.

"…Acknowledged."

Kai smirked faintly.

"…Good."

The soldiers hesitated.

Something had changed.

They could feel it too.

Kai stepped forward.

Calm.

Focused.

Split…

But not broken.

"…Let's see what you're really here for."

The first soldier charged.

Kai moved.

But this time—

Not as one.

But as something more.

Shards split.

Strategies split.

Instinct split.

And Kai—

Moved faster than before.

A shard struck the soldier's shoulder—precise, System-driven.

Another cut across its legs—fragment-driven.

A third—

Appeared where neither voice expected.

Kai smiled.

"…Got it."

The synchronization bar flickered:

[Synchronization Progress: 23%]

The soldiers froze.

For the first time—

They hesitated.

And that was enough.

Kai stepped in.

Shards converged.

One final strike.

The soldier dropped.

The others paused.

Kai's breathing slowed.

"…Yeah."

He looked at his hands.

"…This is dangerous."

The girl stared at him.

Not afraid.

But realizing something.

"…You're… not just fighting anymore."

Kai looked up.

Eyes sharp.

Focused.

Dangerous.

"…No."

He smirked slightly.

"…I'm learning how to win."

The remaining soldiers stepped back.

Then—

They spoke.

For the first time.

But not to Kai.

"To the System."

Their voices overlapped.

Mechanical.

Unified.

"Host anomaly confirmed.""Adjusting containment parameters."

Kai froze.

"…Containment?"

The air changed.

He felt it.

Pressure rising.

Control tightening.

The System flickered violently.

"WARNING—AUTHORITY OVERRIDE DETECTED—"

Kai's eyes widened.

"…Wait—"

The soldiers raised their hands.

Energy gathering.

And then—

One final statement.

Cold.

Final.

"Bridge Candidate will be retrieved."

Kai clenched his fists.

"…Not happening."

The fragment inside him whispered.

"…Good."

The System responded.

"…Prepare."

Kai exhaled.

Slow.

Steady.

"…Then let's make this interesting."

The ground cracked beneath his feet.

Shards rose.

Two voices.

One body.

And a fight that was no longer about survival.

But control.
