Chapter 14 - AUTHORITY DOES NOT ASK

The air didn't move.

It pressed.

Like the world itself had leaned in too close, watching him breathe.

"Containment formation—lock," one of the soldiers said.

Their voices were no longer human.

Flat. Layered. Processed.

Kai didn't respond.

His eyes were locked forward, but something else inside him was already shifting.

The ground beneath his boots didn't just crack—

It responded.

Shards lifted in slow motion, orbiting him like broken stars caught in a dying orbit.

"Host anomaly exhibiting reactive field behavior," another soldier reported. "Classifying… unstable."

Kai tilted his head slightly.

"Unstable?"

His voice came out quiet.

Too quiet.

The kind of quiet that made the soldiers hesitate for half a heartbeat.

The System flickered again.

Then—

"—Retrieval protocol initiated."

A pulse of energy detonated outward.

Not explosive.

Directive.

The world tried to obey.

Kai felt it immediately.

His muscles tightened without permission.

His breath caught.

His vision blurred at the edges like reality itself was trying to reformat him.

"…No."

The word came out strained.

Not loud.

But defiant.

The fragment inside him stirred.

Not whispering this time.

Not observing.

Smiling.

"Finally," it said, voice layered beneath his own. "They're doing it properly."

Kai's fingers twitched.

"You enjoying this?" he muttered under his breath.

"Immensely."

The soldiers moved.

Not running.

Not rushing.

Approaching.

Perfect synchronization.

Their feet barely touched the ground as they advanced in a widening arc, forming a loose ring around him.

The air between them shimmered.

Fields activating.

Constraints layering.

"Target movement suppressed within twelve seconds," one said calmly.

Kai's lips curled slightly.

"Let's test that."

He stepped forward.

And the world snapped.

BOOM.

Kai vanished from where he stood.

A shard of stone shot forward in his place—

And a soldier's arm snapped out, catching it mid-air.

Crushed.

Disintegrated.

Kai reappeared behind them—

Too fast.

His fist was already moving.

"LEFT—!"

Too late.

Impact.

The soldier flew forward like a broken doll, crashing into the ground with a thunderous crack.

But Kai didn't follow through.

He staggered.

His own body—

resisted the motion.

"…Tch."

The System's grip tightened.

"Movement parameters restricted."

Kai gritted his teeth.

His vision flickered—

For a split second—

He saw himself from outside his body.

Standing still.

Like a puppet.

Strings pulled tight.

"…What… is that…?" he whispered.

The fragment answered.

"That's what they're trying to make you."

Kai's breathing sharpened.

The soldiers didn't waste the moment.

They struck.

All at once.

Kai twisted—

Barely.

A blade grazed his side.

Heat.

Pain.

Real.

Another strike came from the left—

He caught it.

His hand trembling under the force.

"Still resisting?" a soldier said.

Kai looked at them.

And laughed.

Low.

Raw.

"You call this… restraint?"

His eyes sharpened.

Then—

Something broke.

SNAP.

The air around Kai split.

Not physically.

But perceptually.

Two overlapping presences surged through him.

His stance shifted.

Subtle.

Refined.

Deadly.

The fragment spoke through him—

Not louder.

But cleaner.

"Step back."

Kai moved.

But it wasn't him.

He vanished again.

And this time—

He didn't reappear in one place.

Three.

Four afterimages.

Each one moving differently.

Each one real enough to kill.

The soldiers hesitated.

"…Impossible."

Kai's voice came from all directions.

"Is it?"

The illusions collapsed inward—

And Kai struck.

CRACK.

CRASH.

A soldier dropped.

Then another.

Then another.

But—

The System pulsed.

Hard.

"ADAPTIVE RESPONSE ENGAGED."

The soldiers stopped falling.

Their bodies twitched.

Reconstructed.

Recalibrated.

Rewritten.

Kai froze mid-motion.

His eyes widened.

"…What?"

The soldier he had just dropped stood again.

Head tilted.

Eyes empty.

"…Threat behavior increasing."

Kai stepped back.

Slowly.

"…You're kidding."

The fragment inside him went quiet.

For the first time.

The System spoke again.

And this time—

It wasn't cold.

It was certain.

"Bridge Candidate retrieval will proceed."

The soldiers raised their hands.

All of them.

At once.

The ground beneath Kai glowed.

Lines forming.

A pattern.

A seal.

His breath hitched.

"…That's not a containment field…"

The fragment whispered.

"No."

A pause.

Then—

"That's extraction."

Kai's eyes widened.

"…Extraction?"

The System answered.

Final.

"Commencing retrieval."

The world folded.

Pressure collapsed inward.

Kai's body jerked violently as something tried to pull him out of himself.

His limbs locked.

His breath cut off.

His vision fractured.

"—NGH—!"

His knees hit the ground.

The shards around him shattered into dust.

His body trembling.

"...I—" he gasped.

"—can't—"

The fragment surged.

"FIGHT IT."

Kai's teeth clenched.

His fingers dug into the ground.

Blood seeped from beneath his nails.

"…I'm—"

He lifted his head.

Eyes shaking.

"…not—"

The System pushed harder.

The world screamed.

Then—

Silence.

A beat.

A single moment.

Kai exhaled.

Slow.

Deep.

His eyes lifted.

No fear.

No hesitation.

Just—

Decision.

"…Then let's make this interesting."

The air exploded outward.

The seal cracked.

The soldiers staggered.

"…Impossible—!"

Kai stood.

Not resisting.

Not breaking.

But aligning.

His voice dropped.

Calm.

Focused.

Dangerous.

"Fragment."

"…Yeah."

"Work with me."

A pause.

Then—

"…Gladly."

And for the first time—

Their voices synced.

The ground shattered.

The air tore open.

The soldiers surged forward—

Too late.

Kai moved.

Not as one.

Not as many.

But as something in between.

And the battlefield…

changed.
