Chapter 7 - Chapter Seven: The Self-Destruct Button

Ok, anyone who says you can sleep when you die, tell them to come talk to

me after a few months as an intern. Of course, it's not just the job that keeps

us up all night.

"You have to get up now." Meredith informed Derek sleepily as she rolled

over to look at him.

"What? My God, what time is it?" Derek asked, sleepily.

Meredith rolled onto of him.

"It's 5:20, and I have pre-rounds. And you have to leave before they see

you." Meredith told him.

"Oh, come on, now. Why don't you just let them see?" Derek asked her,

flipping them so he was on top.

"No!" Meredith said sternly. The last thing she needed was Izzie and

George to see Derek leaving her bedroom.

"Please!"

"No, No!"

In the kitchen Izzie is watching the coffee percolate, tired from the lack of

sleep, as George enters the kitchen from the laundry room.

"You get any sleep?" He asked.

Izzie shook her head.

"She could oil the bedsprings as a courtesy or at least buy a padded

headboard." Izzie commented.

"So who's the guy?" George asked, curious to see if Izzie knew.

"You think it was just one guy doing all that work?" Izzie asked her

roommate.

"Yeah, do you mind if I don't think about that?" George asked her, grossed

out at the thought, and annoyed that he missed out on his chance with

Meredith with this mystery man.

"Oh, jealous?" Izzie teased.

"I'm not jealous." George denied.

"Well, I am. But at least I know she'll be having a long day at work." Izzie

said, as they heard the stairs creaked. The two, being nosey, decided to peak

from the kitchen door, when they saw Dr. Shepherd sneak out the front

door.

"Well, at least we know brain surgery isn't his only skill." Izzie commented

angry and shocked that Meredith was sleeping with the attending.

"They can't be...He's her boss." George denied trying to think of an excuse

that didn't involve Meredith with sleeping with their boss.

"We're late. He's all of our boss. You know she has been scrubbing in a lot

lately on his surgeries." Izzie ranted, thinking back on all the neuro cases

she had been on lately.

"No, Meredith wouldn't sleep with him just to...No." George said shaking

his head.

"Well, if she's not ashamed of it, why is she keeping it a secret?" Izzie asked

him.

"Maybe she didn't. Maybe it just happened. You know, spontaneously, last

night." George said, though his scenario seemed weak.

Meredith enters kitchen unaware that her roommates knew.

"Hi. Good morning." Meredith greeted.

"Morning. Hey, so it sounded like you were having some pretty radical sex

last night, all night long. Who was the guy?" Izzie asked, wondering if her

roommate would actually tell them.

"No one you know." Meredith answered.

"We're late. Let's go." Izzie snapped annoyed and pissed at Meredith for

throwing away her career possibly before it even started.

I mean, if life's so hard already, why do we bring more trouble down on

ourselves? What's up with the need to hit the self-destruct button?

The three roommates arrive at work and get out of the car. Cristina is on the

parking lot on her motorcycle. While Eddie is getting out of her car on the

other side of the bike.

"Yikes, wouldn't want to meet you in a dark alley." Meredith teased the

Korean woman.

"Right back at ya." Cristina said.

Alex jogs up to them.

"A run? You run?" Izzie asked surprised when she saw the evil spawn,

sweaty, running up to the hospital.

"Every day, babe, every day." Alex said.

"Not suffering enough?" Eddie asked him.

"What doesn't kill you, makes you stronger." Alex informed the pregnant

intern.

"Don't go acting all indefatigable. You're dragging like the rest of us."

Cristina told the male intern.

"Oh, what is that, professional weakness, Dr. Yang?" Alex teased.

"It's called the flu." Cristina shot back.

"Yeah." Alex said rolling his eyes.

In the locker room Bailey's interns were getting ready for another long shift.

"I'm gonna need a major rush to make it through this day. I need a kick-ass

surgery." George said, stretching trying to keep himself awake.

"Ooh, you a bad boy last night, George?" Alex teased her.

"That would be Meredith." Izzie informed Alex.

"You a bad boy, Meredith?" Alex teased the older blonde.

"Do tell." Cristina and Eddie said together, interested in just how Meredith

had been a bad boy.

"Nothing to tell." Meredith informed her two best friends.

"That says it all, huh?" Cristina asked Eddie who nodded with a smirk on

her face.

Izzie slams locker door. Getting more and more annoyed as they talked

about this morning.

"Sorry, I have a sex life." Meredith apologized to the group.

"Don't apologize. Embrace it. Share it. Count me in." Alex said.

" Yeah, next time, just let me know if I need to go to a hotel or Eddie's place

or something so I can get some sleep." Izzie snipped.

"Am I missing something?" Meredith asked.

"You were just a little loud." George said as he and Alex left, following

Izzie.

Cristina and Eddie turned to look at Meredith with a questioning look.

Meredith and McDreamy had been dating for the past week, and they had

been at least sleeping together that long as well.

"Do they know it's McDreamy keeping them up all night?" Cristina asked

her friend.

"I hope not. I already have Bailey riding me, I don't need my roommates

thinking I'm getting special treatment." Meredith said.

"Well, the way they're acting it is more than just you keeping them up all

night." Eddie said, "you better find out and fast."

Later in the morning, Eddie and George were in an exam room with a

parent with a young baby, who's foot was twitching.

"Hello, I am Doctor George O'Malley and this is Doctor Edit Sousa,"

George said introducing them.

"Hello, I'm Sam Hayes, my wife Judith, and our daughter Jamie. We're here

before of her foot. It was recommended we come here by our doctor."

"Hi there, Jamie." Eddie greeted the young girl with a sweet, wide, smile.

"I'm am Eddie, and this is George. Can you open your mouth like a lion?"

Jamie giggled and opened her mouth saying "roar!" and Eddie examined the

little girl's throat while George talked to her parents.

"Ahh. And you noticed her foot twitching?" George asked.

"My foot." Jamie babbled as Eddie smile brightly as she grabbed the little

girl's foot causing her to giggle in delight.

"About three months ago?" George asked.

"Just a little. We took her to County Hospital and she got the CT scan,

which showed her..." Mrs. Hayes told them.

"Brain abnormality." Eddie supplied to the parents as she let Jamie play

with her pen light.

"..And the twitching has gotten worse?" George asked.

"A lot worse. They just don't have the proper equipment back home to

figure out what's wrong." Mr. Hayes explained, as Eddie allowed the little

girl to shine the pen light in her mouth.

"You did a... you did a good thing." George said to the parents.

"Show Mommy." Jamie babbled to Eddie as she gave the little girl a big

grin.

"Yes, your mommy." Eddie cooed, "we can show your mommy in a

minute."

"Show Mommy and Daddy." Jamie babbled to Eddie, while playing with

the pen light.

"You did a good thing by coming all this way, Mr. and Mrs. Hayes. You sit

tight Jamie, ok? We're gonna bring in Dr. Shepherd to see you, okay."

George said.

"Shepherd." Jamie babbled.

"Yeah, Dr. Shepherd." Eddie agreed.

"He's the brain specialist." Eddie informed the parents.

"Mommy and Daddy." Jamie babbled.

"Doctors? Is he good, this Dr. Shepherd?" Mrs. Hayes asked worried about

her little girl.

"At just about everything." George commented, Eddie shot him a look

before saying.

"He is one the best neurosurgeons in the country. Jamie will be in great

hands." Eddie promised the parents before crouching down slightly to

Jamie's height and said. "Bye Jamie, we'll be back soon okay?"

"Bye-bye DeDe!" Jamie said happily, clearly smitten with the sweet, young,

blonde doctor.

Eddie and George were watching Derek's surgery from the scrub room

when the CTs cam in.

"Here you go, doc. The kid's CTs just arrived from County. Thanks." The

tech said.

Just then, Dr. Taylor, the anesthesiologist entered, smelling of bourbon.

"Excuse me." Dr. Taylor said as he quickly scrubbed in.

"Sorry, Dr. Taylor." George said as he step aside to let the man into the

surgical room.

"That would be bourbon." the tech informed the interns.

Eddie and George shared a shocked look. How could he be so calm about

their anesthesiologist smelling like a bottle of bourbon. He was handling

drugs for god sakes! What if something went wrong and someone got to

much or to little. No doctor should operate or see patients if they've been

drinking, like he clearly had been.

"What?" George asked.

"I smelled it too. And he's the best anesthesiologist on the staff. I'll worry

when he's too juiced to do his crossword puzzle." The tech told them, as

they looked in to see Dr. Taylor working on his crossword puzzle.

"Will you close up for me?" Derek asked his neurosurgeon fellow, Dr. Rory

Burkhardt. "Thank you everyone."

Derek met the two interns out in the hallway.

"Dr. Shepherd..." George said.

"I got to get some coffee." Derek muttered tiredly.

"Jamie Hayes has been admitted. The little girl with the brain abnormality."

Eddie said.

"How's she presenting?" Derek asked, sounding a bit more alert.

"She has what looks like continuous seizure activity in her left foot. Her

balance is off. Her parents have come along way to find out what's wrong."

George reported as Eddie handed over the films.

"These are three months old." Eddie explained as he looked at them, "I

assume you would like new ones, but I thought you might like to see what

we have starting off." Eddie said.

The attending looked at her, shocked that she seemed to be a step ahead of

even some residents. "Exactly, Sousa, her brain could look dramatically

different today."

"Ok, I'll order them..." George said jumping at the chance to be away from

the attending that Meredith was sleeping with and whom kept him up.

"Thank you." Derek said.

"Oh, Dr. Shepherd, can I talk to you?" Eddie asked as she stepped on the

elevator before the door closed.

"Sure, what is the matter Eddie?" Derek asked, using the girls name since

the two were alone.

"It's about Dr. Taylor. I know there is some code about not rating a fellow

doctor out. But, I have a major concern."

"What concern?" Derek asked looking at the pregnant girl.

"He smelled like the bar room floor, sir. He was drunk Dr. Shepherd, and

that could lead to massive issues down the line. And, I don't feel

comfortable just letting him work with patients if he is half-way sauced."

Eddie said. "I don't know who to report it to, or if it is some sort of open

secret and no one has cared to stop it, but I thought you'd be a good place to

at least start."

"I'll look into it Eddie. You did the right thing by reporting it. I'll handle it."

Dr. Shepherd promised the young intern who nodded.

After stopping to get some coffee, Derek and Eddie entered Jamie's room

with George, who had been waiting for them. George hung to the side as

Eddie assisted Derek in looking over the little girl.

"You look like a princess. Do you know you're a princess?" Derek cooed at

the little girl.

"Yes she does." Eddie agreed, booping the little girls nose, sending her into

a peel of giggles. "You're Princess Jamie aren't you."

"Princess DeDe!" Jamie said looking at Eddie with sweet, wide eyes.

"Oh, I'm a princess too!" Eddie said with a bright grin and a shocked face,

as Jamie babbled 'Princess DeDe' again. "Thank you, Princess Jamie."

She was keeping the little girl distracted as Dr. Shepherd looked her over.

And, she was doing a fantastic job.

"It's not lipstick." Jamie told Dr. Shepherd and Eddie as she took the

hammer that Derek had just used to test her reflex.

"It's not lipstick? No, it's not lipstick." Derek agreed seriously. "Want to do

my shoulder?"

Jamie happily tapped Derek's shoulder with a wide grin.

"Oh, good, thanks." Derek told her.

"And nose?" Jamie asked.

"No nose, it'll cause an ochie." Eddie said, as she pointed to her arm. "How

about the arm?"

"Arm." Jamie said as she tapped Eddie's arm.

"We're gonna find out what's causing these seizures." Derek promised her

parents. Then he looked at George and asked; "Does MRI know we're

coming down?"

"You said CT." George spat out, somewhat angrily.

"Now I'm saying MRI." Derek said.

"It's available." Eddie said as Jamie played with her curly blonde hair.

"Good." Derek said.

"Doctor, is she gonna need surgery?" Mr. Hayes asked Dr. Shepherd.

"I don't know yet." Derek said honestly.

"It's just that my wife and I, we both work and I don't know if our

insurance..." Mr. Hayes said.

"We know it can be very expensive." Mrs. Hayes said worriedly.

"I don't want you to worry about that." Derek told the parents.

"Why don't we send someone from accounting down, and they can discuss

possible options with you while you wait?" Eddie suggested, the parents

looked relieved as Jamie's leg started twitching quickly.

" It's a focal, left-side seizure. Ok, let's get the diazepam running now,

please. Tourniquet, please." Derek told the Eddie.

Derek put the cuff on Jamie's arm and Eddie explained to the little girl what

he was doing. "Look at this, Princess Jamie, it's a super special princess cuff

you get to wear." The baby's eyes looked at it with interest. "Now, Dr.

Shepherd is going to put this butterfly in your arm to be your friend. How

does that sound?"

Jamie barely noticed the "butterfly" be put in, charmed by the blonde, and

her leg stopped twitching.

"Butterfly!" Jamie said pointing to Eddie's necklace, which was in fact of a

butterfly.

"That is right a butterfly." Eddie said. "We match!"

"Match!"

"It's amazing stuff, isn't it?" Derek asked the parents.

"Um-hmm." Mrs. Hayes said.

"Hey, you like spaceships?" Derek asked Jamie.

"Yeah."

"You do? Okay, should we take Captain O'Malley, my first lieutenant, and

Princess DeDe to the spaceship MRI. Let's go." Derek said.

"It's called Rasmussen's encephalitis. What it amounts to is that this side of

her brain..." Derek informed Jamie's parents as he points to the area on the

screen. "This part's all healthy, working perfectly. This black part of the

brain, this...all of that is dead, or dying. The condition has gotten radically

worse since her CT scans three months ago. Left untreated, the disease is

gonna kill her."

"How soon?" Mrs. Hayes asked nervously and dread filling her entire

being. Eddie gently placed her hand on her bump, trying not to think about

all the different things that could go wrong with her baby.

"Too soon." Derek said.

"So is there a cure?"

"The treatment requires the diseased portion of her brain be removed and

sealed off. See, eventually, the spinal fluid will fill the cavity." Derek

explained.

"R-Remove? But, I mean, that's..." Mr. Hayes said looking at the screen,

dread filling him, how could his little girl live without half a brain?

"Half her brain, yes."

"Half her brain. That...seems impossible." Mrs. Hayes asks.

"Her age makes it possible. Her brain's not fully developed, so the

remaining neurons will compensate for the loss." Derek explained.

Mrs. Hayes practically ran to Jamie's side as she was wheeled out of the

MRI room, and George quickly followed her.

"But will she be normal?" Mr. Hayes asked.

The two doctors and Mr. Hayes walked out of the room.

"There are risks to any surgery. And this is, you know, a major one. But if

we're successful, Jamie could walk out of this hospital in a couple weeks,

go on to live a relatively normal life." Derek told the man honestly.

"Look, I know this is a lot to digest. The important thing to remember is

that we can save her life." Eddie said softly, and the man nodded.

"Thank you." Mr. Hayes said sincerely as he and his wife followed the

nurses who were taking Jamie to her room.

"Dr. O'Malley? Dr. Sousa?" Derek called to the interns who were walking

away.

"Yes? What?" George asked irritated.

"I'm sorry to bother you but if the parents consent I thought you'd like to

scrub in on the hemispherectomy. Are you in, or not?" Derek asked the two.

"Yes, of course sir." Eddie said.

"In." George grunted as he walked away.

"Dr. Sousa, I just want to say I was very impressed with how you handled

this case. I think you may have a bright future in Peds. The way you

handled Jamie and her parents well. You kept Jamie distracted and you were

calm and respectful while talking to the parents. Good work. Keep it up."

Derek said.

"Thank you sir!" Eddie said.

"Yang.Eddie and I are scrubbing in on a hemispherectomy with Shepherd."

George gloated to the other intern when they found her near the vending

machines.

"Get out! I would kill for that." Cristina said, with a touch of jealousy in her

tone.

"We're gonna cut out half a girl's brain." Eddie said as she went to the

vending machine and bought a bag of Funions that were calling her name.

"And it's going to work. It's outrageous. Almost makes it hard to hate him."

George said.

"Why do you hate him?" Cristina asked.

"Oh, no reason." George tried to brush it off, kicking himself for saying

anything.

"You know about him and Meredith?" Cristina asked.

"You know?" George asked shocked. Then he turned to Eddie and noticed

she didn't look shocked either, though she could just been deeply involved

with her Funions which she savored as if they were the best things in the

world. "Did you know?"

" When are you gonna figure out that Eddie and I know everything?"

Cristina asked.

It was true. Eddie and Cristina seemed to know everything. Eddie because

she was kind to all the nurses who loved to share their gossip and she was

more observant than most people. While Cristina just spent a little to much

time there.

"They know." George informed Izzie as she came up the stairs.

"What, about doctor-cest?" Izzie asked.

"It's been going on for, like ever." Eddie said as she popped a Funonion in

her mouth.

"Seriously?" Izzie asked.

"And you didn't tell us?" George asked.

"Ooh, you're a gossip, huh?" Cristina taunted.

"I am not!" George denied.

"I am." Izzie said as they arrived at the hospital coffee shop.

"He's about to go into major brain surgery on no sleep? Not very

responsible." George said, referring to the little to possibly no sleep Dr.

Shepherd got the night before.

"Jealous much? Sex all night isn't about being responsible." Cristina said.

"Better than drunk." Eddie said, as she looked to George. "I told Shepherd

about that by the way. He said he'd take care of it."

"No, it's about sex all night. I can't believe you're not more pissed off about

this, you of all people." Izzie said to Cristina.

"Well, she works hard all day. She's good at her job. Why should you care

how she unwinds? I mean, you like to bake all night. Some people like to

drink. Others like an occasional screaming orgasm." Cristina explained.

"Yeah, we do. Forget I said that. Pretend like I'm not here. Continue." Alex

said as he joined them. Then he looked to Cristina and said, "You look like

you need to be spoon-fed."

"You look like Alex." Cristina deadpanned.

"You really don't look good, Cristina. Why don't you go home, or hit a few

hours in the on-call room?" Eddie said. "It might do you some good."

"Nah, I'll be good." Cristina said waving off the younger girl's concern.

"Though, take your own advice, if you are tired go lay down for a bit."

"I do. Bailey forces me to about half-way through my shift. If I am in

surgery, right after that I am off for an hour." Eddie said, it was annoying,

but she knew the older resident was looking out for her and that Bailey did

the same.

"Weren't we talking about sex, anyway?" Alex asked.

"Doofus." George commented.

"Ew." Izzie said.

"I appreciate this. The chance to scrub in on this kind of procedure is,

well...Yeah, I appreciate it." George told the attending.

"Me too." Eddie said as she scrubbed. She noticed Dr. Taylor was in the

room, and she hoped Derek talked to him, or would take care of it.

"Here you go. Triple espresso, not too hot." A nurse said as she entered with

a hot coffee for Derek.

"Oh, I love you, seriously." Derek said.

"Ah, coffee, where would medicine be without it, huh?" Dr. Taylor said, the

two interns could smell the alcohol on his breath.

Obviously, Derek hadn't taken care of it yet. But, Eddie said nothing as a

nurse, Susan, helped Eddie cover her cast with a bag so it could stay clean

and keep the OR sterile.

" I hope you have a new crossword, Taylor. We're gonna be here a while."

Derek told the man.

"Never go without." He said patting his pockets. "Big day for you, kids.

Congrats."

"Thanks." George said.

"Hey, Princess Jamie. You ready to take a nap?" Eddie asked. "And, when

you wake up, you'll be with mommy and daddy. Okay?"

"Okay Princess DeDe." Jamie said.

"Hey, look what I got." Dr. Taylor said holding the mask to her face.

"I just need you to blow some bubbles for me. That's it sweetie. Blow

bubbles, that's it. Just breathe in. Oh, that's it." Eddie cooed.

With her focusing on Jamie, she hadn't heard George and Derek's

conversation, until she heard George say loudly. "Uh...I'm sorry, Dr. Taylor,

but did you just...? Have you been drinking?"

"I beg your pardon?" Dr. Taylor asked offended.

"What?" Derek asked.

"Do you smell...I...I smell alcohol." George said.

"Where the hell do you get off accusing me of something like that?" Dr.

Taylor asked, reminding Eddie of her Step-Stan, who was basically a

functioning alcoholic her entire life.

"George, you're out of line." Derek said.

"There are rules. You know, there are rules for a reason." George said.

"Dr. Shepherd, respectfully, You just...There is a 2-year-old girl on this

table. One who believes the MRI is a space shift and anesthesia is blowing

bubbles, and that she is a princess. You shouldn't take advantage of

someone else's vulnerability." Eddie spoke up as she looked down at sweet

little Jamie.

"Look, I don't need some punk interns telling me what's at stake here. Get

him out of here, Shep. The girl can stay because she only said something

because he did." George and Dr. Taylor look at Derek. While Eddie glared

at him, because condescending dick much?

"Shep?"

"You're out, George." He said after a moment of weighing his options.

George nods and looks as Eddie, with a look telling her to stay, because he

knew if he wanted her to, she would be out of here faster than him. Most

likely right to Bailey and the Chief, to rain holy hell on the hospital. George

swore that Eddie and Bailey could rule the hospital with little to no effort.

Everyone liked and respected them.

" You damn well better be ready, Taylor." Derek told the man, somewhat

icily.

"I wouldn't be here if I wasn't." He said.

Eddie had to bite her tongue, thinking about Jamie.

"All right, we're gonna start the procedure with the left temporal lobectomy.

Thanks for joining us, Dr. Yang. After the temporal, we'll do the frontal, and

then the occipital." Derek said.

Cristina and Eddie look up to see George watching from the gallery. Dr.

Taylor is working on his crossword puzzle. Eddie sighed and focused on

Jamie. Knowing there was nothing she could do right now, but knew she

would be talking to the chief once she was done.

"From the frontal lobectomy, I'm going to encounter a, uh..." Derek

explained to everyone

No one had yet to notice that Jamie although sedated is blinking.

"We'll encounter the anterior cerebral artery." Eddie said.

"Yes, so we're gonna need to, uh..." Derek started.

"Dr. Shepherd." Eddie said, noticing now that Jamie seemed to be waking

up. "Her eyes."

Derek noticed Jamie's eyes were fluttering and called out to Dr. Taylor.

"You know, Taylor, her anesthesia's awful light." There was no response

from Taylor, Jamie still blinking.

"Come on, Taylor, s-she's waking up." Eddie called.

"Dr. Taylor? Uh, he's asleep!" Cristina said.

"Taylor! Dr. Taylor!" Derek screamed.

"Huh? Oh, God, sorry. Sorry, I'm on it. My bad, Shep." Dr. Taylor

apologized.

"He was right, wasn't he?" Derek asked angrily.

"Aw, I nodded off. Come on." Taylor said, brushing it off.

"Yeah, whatever you got to do to get through the day, right?" Eddie asked

sarcastically, her tone filled with contempt that no one had heard before.

"Steph, get me some coffee." Dr. Taylor ordered, Steph, one of the scrub

nurses.

"Yes, doctor." Steph said, readying to step out.

"I'll be fine. It won't happen again." Dr. Taylor told Derek.

"Yeah, not in here, it won't. Uh, Steph, call Dr. Pennington. Hopkins, take

over until she gets here. Get out of here and get it together." Derek decided,

kicking the drunk man out, which honestly, Eddie thought was a little too

late.

"This packing, we hope, will prevent hemorrhaging. Dr. Yang, Dr. Sousa,

do you want to add something to that?

"It will allow the cerebral spinal fluid to eventually fill the cavity." The two

girls answered at the same time.

"Hmm, very nice." Derek nodded.

"Dr. Burkhardt, Dr. Chen, you wanna close up?" Derek asked to his two

fellows.

"Yes, doctor." Dr. Burkhardt said.

"I'm gonna go to bed." Derek said.

"That was unreal. I mean, that's...that's all there is. I...I was feeling sick

until I came here." Cristina informed the doctor, while Eddie nodded in

agreement.

"I was tired. Now I'm tired again. It's back to reality." Derek said, as he

points to the gallery and motions for George to come down, and motioned

for Eddie to come with him.

"Let me explain." Derek started looking at the two interns who were

looking at him as they rested against the wall.

"It's fine." George tried to brush it off.

"No, there is a code among doctors. We're not supposed to ask each other

questions, not within the walls of this hospital." Derek said.

"That is why I came to you earlier Dr. Shepherd." Eddie said, "I was hoping

to avoid something like what just happened."

"Ok, I was out of line." George said.

"No, you weren't. I was. I was out of line. Somebody should have taken

responsibility. It should have been the guy doing the cutting. It should have

been me. You didn't deserve what happened to you today. You did the right

thing code or no code." Derek said.

Derek extends his hand for George to shake, George hesitates then shakes

his hand.

"You saw me leave the house this morning, didn't you?" Derek asked,

speaking only to George.

"Oh, was that you?" George said, trying to play stupid.

"Hmm. I'm not using her. And I don't favor her." Derek told the intern

honestly. He truly cared about Meredith, and he knew this could end badly

for the both of them, but he tried to not mess with her future.

"She's pretty great, you know." George said.

"Mm-hmm. So, come on, let's go tell Jamie's parents she's gonna be fine,

barring any complications." Derek said.

George started to the elevator, and Derek turned the intern who had a

knowing look in her eyes.

"You know as well." Derek guessed.

"Since the first day. You two basically reek of sexual frustration and

chemistry. And you weren't at all discreet." Eddie said and Derek looked

shocked.

"Why does everyone always looked shocked when I talk about sex? I'm a

genius, a doctor, and not to mention twenty years old for god sake. Is it the

genius thing, do people think I'm socially inept? I am a genius not a nun.

How do people think I got pregnant? Immaculate conception?" Eddie

ranted, as she motioned to her slightly swollen belly, as Derek smiled a bit.

"Good job today, Eddie. Seriously, as much as I want you to follow me to

neuro, I think you have a future in pediatrics or maybe even neonatal."

Derek said.

"Thanks Dr. Shepherd, let's go see Jamie's parents." Eddie said as they

made their way to George who waited for them by the elevator that just

opened.

Maybe we like the pain.

A couple hours later, after her shift, Eddie and George made their way to

Jamie's room to check on the little girl, to find Derek there with her.

"Pooh." Jamie said holding up the Pooh toy.

"How's she doing?" George asked.

"Good." Derek said with his McDreamy smile.

"Good." Eddie and George said as they watched Jamie for a few minutes

babble and giggle.

Maybe we're wired that way.

Burke entered a on-call room, the one he and Cristina agreed to meet at to

find it pitch black

"Cristina?" He flips on the light to find the room empty.

Because without it, I don't know...

Cristina is in the bathroom looking at a pregnancy test as she sat on the

toilet. And it was positive.

What was she going to do?

...maybe we just wouldn't feel real.

Derek decided to sleep at Meredith's place instead of driving all the way

back to his trailer that he needed to take a ferry to.

"You know, we could just..." Derek started to ask.

"Sleep?" Meredith offered.

"We could, yeah, if...if you want to." Derek said unsure, but he was just so

tired.

"Yeah?" Meredith said as they both crawl into bed.

What's that saying? "Why do I keep hitting myself with a hammer?"

Eddie Sousa sighed as she laid in bed. Her baby name book open as she

wrote names down on the folded list she kept. She was also occasionally

saying something on the phone, to her best friend, Eli, who was starting to

drift off to after a long day at the office. He, was as much of a work-a-holic

as she was. Seeing as he had just gotten home himself.
