Chapter 14 - Chapter 14: The Girl Who Remembers

They walked in silence.

Not the quiet from before—

Not the tense kind filled with danger.

This silence was different.

Heavy.

As if something had already been lost…

And neither of them could bring it back.

Kael walked ahead this time.

His steps steady.

Measured.

But something about him had changed.

Subtle.

Yet unmistakable.

His presence felt sharper.

Colder.

Like a blade that had been tempered too many times.

Behind him, the girl watched.

Closely.

"…You don't even ask anymore," she said suddenly.

Kael didn't stop.

"…Ask what?"

"…About what you lost."

A pause.

"…Or who."

Kael kept walking.

"…Would it change anything?"

Silence.

"…No," she admitted.

"…Then it doesn't matter."

Her gaze lingered on him.

Longer than before.

"…That's not true."

Kael finally stopped.

Slowly turning toward her.

"…Then tell me."

His eyes met hers.

"…What did I lose?"

For the first time—

She hesitated.

Her expression shifted.

Just slightly.

"…You're not ready."

Kael's gaze didn't waver.

"…You've said that before."

"…And I meant it."

"…Try me."

A long silence followed.

The forest around them felt still.

Watching.

Waiting.

Then—

She sighed.

Softly.

"…Fine."

Kael didn't move.

Didn't speak.

He waited.

"…Her name…"

She stopped.

Just for a moment.

"…was Lina."

The world didn't shake.

No sudden realization came.

No flood of memories.

Only—

Silence.

Kael blinked once.

"…Lina…"

The name felt…

Empty.

Like trying to remember a dream that had already faded.

"…I don't remember her."

Her gaze lowered slightly.

"…I know."

Kael frowned.

"…Was she important?"

The question hung in the air.

And for a brief moment—

Something in her expression broke.

"…She was everything."

Kael's chest tightened.

Not with memory.

But with something else.

A faint…

Pain.

"…Everything…"

He repeated the word slowly.

Trying to understand it.

But failing.

"…Then I guess…"

He looked at his hand.

"…I really did lose a lot."

"…Yes."

Her voice was quieter now.

"…More than you realize."

Silence.

Kael exhaled slowly.

"…Then I'll just make sure it wasn't for nothing."

Her eyes snapped to him.

"…You don't even remember why you wanted to protect her."

"…No."

"…And you're still moving forward?"

Kael looked ahead.

"…I remember the outcome."

A pause.

"…Death."

His eyes hardened slightly.

"…Loss."

"…And regret."

He clenched his fist.

"…Even if I don't remember her…"

His voice dropped.

"…I remember that."

Silence fell again.

But this time—

It wasn't heavy.

It was… understood.

"…You're strange," she said quietly.

"…You've mentioned that."

"…No," she shook her head slightly.

"…Not strange like before."

She stepped closer.

"…Strange in a way that shouldn't exist."

Kael raised a brow.

"…Care to explain?"

"…Most people who lose something like that…"

She paused.

"…They break."

"…Or they stop."

"…Or they try to get it back."

Her eyes locked onto his.

"…But you…"

A small breath escaped her lips.

"…You're just moving forward."

Kael thought about it.

Then—

"…What else am I supposed to do?"

She didn't answer.

Because she didn't have one.

The forest shifted again.

The air growing colder.

Sharper.

Kael noticed immediately.

"…Something's coming."

"…Yes."

Her expression returned to normal.

Cold.

Composed.

"…And this time…"

She stepped forward.

"…It won't be something you can handle alone."

Kael smirked faintly.

"…You've been saying that a lot."

"…And you've been surviving anyway."

"…Exactly."

A faint smile appeared on her lips.

"…Then try not to die this time."

The ground trembled.

Not violently.

But steadily.

Something approached.

Slow.

Heavy.

Kael activated Core Sense instantly.

And what he saw—

Made him pause.

"…That's not normal…"

A single presence.

But—

Overwhelming.

Dense.

Layered.

"…It's like…"

"…Multiple cores," she finished.

"…Merged into one."

Kael's eyes sharpened.

"…Another evolution."

"…No."

Her voice dropped slightly.

"…Something worse."

The trees ahead began to fall.

Not cut.

Not broken.

Moved.

Like something massive was pushing through them.

And then—

It appeared.

A towering figure.

At least five meters tall.

Its body was covered in dark, jagged armor.

Its arms—

Too long.

Too heavy.

And embedded across its body—

Multiple glowing cores.

"…What the hell…"

Kael's grip tightened.

"…That's not natural."

"…It's not supposed to be," she said quietly.

The creature stopped.

Then—

All its cores lit up at once.

Kael's instincts screamed.

"…Move—!"

Before he could finish—

The creature attacked.

Not one strike—

But many.

Energy beams shot out from multiple cores—

Covering the entire area.

Kael dodged—

Barely—

Rolling across the ground.

Explosions erupted behind him.

"…This is insane!"

"…Focus!" she snapped.

She moved.

Faster than before.

Intercepting one of the beams—

Deflecting it effortlessly.

"…Its cores are unstable."

"…I figured that much!"

"…Then use it!"

Kael's eyes sharpened.

"…Right…"

He steadied himself.

This wasn't like before.

Not one core.

Many.

Which meant—

"…Chain reaction…"

A plan formed.

Dangerous.

But possible.

"…I'll create an opening."

She glanced at him.

"…Don't die."

"…No promises."

Kael surged forward.

Straight toward the monster.

The cores reacted instantly.

Firing again.

Kael dodged—

Weaving between attacks.

His movements sharper than before.

Faster.

More precise.

"…Now!"

He activated it.

[Devour Activated]

Not on the whole creature—

But—

One core.

The connection formed.

The core flickered.

Unstable.

"…Do it!"

She moved instantly.

Striking another core—

Perfectly timed.

The reaction began.

Energy surged.

Uncontrolled.

The cores began to resonate.

Then—

BOOM!

A massive explosion erupted.

The creature roared—

Its body breaking apart.

Kael was thrown back.

Hard.

But—

He smiled.

"…Got it…"

As the dust settled—

The creature collapsed.

Lifeless.

Silence returned.

Kael lay there.

Breathing heavily.

"…That… worked…"

Footsteps approached.

She stood over him.

"…Barely."

Kael laughed weakly.

"…You're starting to repeat yourself."

"…Because you keep doing reckless things."

"…And surviving."

She looked down at him.

For a moment—

Her expression softened.

"…Idiot."

Kael smirked.

"…Maybe."

But his eyes—

Remained sharp.

Because deep down—

He knew.

Each battle—

Each victory—

Was taking something from him.

And one day—

There might be nothing left.

But until then—

He would keep moving.

Forward.

No matter the cost.
