Chapter 16 - Chapter 16: The One That Cannot Be fought

The world didn't feel stable anymore.

It wasn't just the enemy.

It was everything around them.

The ground flickered.

The air bent.

Even the light itself seemed… inconsistent.

Kael steadied his breathing.

"…So I can't devour it."

The system had already confirmed that.

[Target Cannot Be Consumed]

That alone made it different from anything he had faced.

"…And I can't hit it properly either."

His attacks passed through.

Or worse—

Triggered something he didn't understand.

"…So what's left?"

Silence answered him.

Because even she—

Hadn't given a solution.

The figure stepped forward again.

Slow.

Unstoppable.

"…Final correction in progress."

Kael's eyes sharpened.

"…It keeps saying that…"

"…Because that's what it's trying to do," she said quietly.

He glanced at her.

"…Correct… what?"

A brief pause.

"…You."

That answer hit harder than expected.

"…Me?"

"…You don't belong here."

Kael frowned.

"…I'm literally standing here."

"…Not like this."

Her gaze locked onto him.

"…Not with that power."

Kael's hand instinctively moved to his chest.

The core.

"…So it's reacting to the system…"

"…Yes."

That explained one thing.

But not the bigger problem.

"…Then why hasn't it erased me already?"

"…Because you're resisting."

"…How?"

"…I don't know."

That wasn't reassuring.

The figure stopped.

Right in front of them.

"…Resistance confirmed."

Its voice didn't change.

Still flat.

Still wrong.

"…Correction escalation."

Kael's instincts screamed.

"…Move—!"

Too late.

The world twisted.

Not around him—

But through him.

"—GHK!"

Kael's body froze.

Pain—

But not physical.

Something deeper.

Like parts of him were being pulled apart.

"…It's targeting your core!" she shouted.

Kael gritted his teeth.

"…Of course it is…!"

His vision blurred.

Fragments flickered.

Memories.

More disappearing.

"…No…"

He clenched his fists.

"…Not again…"

The pressure increased.

The figure raised its hand.

"…Erasure in progress."

Kael's body began to distort.

Faintly.

Like he was becoming… unstable.

"…I can't… hold it…"

For the first time—

He felt it.

Not just danger.

But helplessness.

This wasn't something he could outfight.

Not something he could overpower.

"…Then think!"

His mind raced.

There had to be something.

Anything.

Then—

It clicked.

"…It's correcting anomalies…"

"…Yes!"

"…Then I just need to stop being one."

She froze.

"…What?"

Kael's eyes sharpened.

"…If it's reacting to the system…"

His hand tightened over his chest.

"…Then I get rid of the signal."

Her expression changed.

"…You can't be serious."

"…Do I look like I'm joking?"

"…If you suppress it—"

"…I might die."

A pause.

"…Or I might survive."

"…That's not a plan."

"…It's the only one we've got."

The pressure increased.

Kael's body flickered again.

"…Decide fast," he muttered.

Then—

He made his choice.

[Manual Override Initiated]

The system reacted instantly.

[Warning: Core Suppression Detected]

[Risk: Severe Weakening / System Collapse]

Kael ignored it.

"…Shut it down."

[Command Accepted]

The glow in his chest—

Dimmed.

Rapidly.

The power inside him—

Faded.

And with it—

The pressure.

The distortion stopped.

Kael dropped to one knee.

Breathing heavily.

"…It worked…"

The figure froze.

"…Anomaly reduced…"

Its head tilted.

"…Correction no longer required."

Silence.

Then—

It turned.

And began to walk away.

Just like that.

Kael stared.

"…You're kidding…"

"…It's leaving…"

The girl's voice was quiet.

"…Because you're no longer a threat."

Kael let out a weak laugh.

"…So I just had to stop existing like I mattered…"

"…Something like that."

The figure disappeared into the distance.

And just like that—

It was over.

The pressure vanished.

The world stabilized.

Silence returned.

Kael collapsed back onto the ground.

"…That was…"

"…Close," she finished.

He didn't respond.

Because his body—

Felt empty.

Not just from exhaustion.

From loss.

The system flickered weakly.

[Core Suppression Active]

[All functions limited]

"…Great…"

He stared at the sky.

"…Now I'm weak again."

"…Temporarily."

She stepped closer.

"…You did the right thing."

Kael let out a dry laugh.

"…Almost died. Lost more power."

"…And survived something that shouldn't be survivable."

A pause.

"…That matters more."

Kael closed his eyes.

"…Does it?"

Silence.

Then—

"…Yes."

Her voice was softer now.

"…Because now you understand something important."

Kael didn't open his eyes.

"…What?"

"…Not everything can be fought."

A long pause.

"…And not everything should be."

Kael let out a quiet breath.

"…Yeah…"

For once—

He agreed.

But deep down—

He also knew something else.

That thing—

Was still out there.

And next time—

Running or hiding—

Might not work.

His hand clenched slightly.

"…I'll need to be stronger."

Even if—

He had to risk everything again.

Even if—

It cost him more of himself.

Because now—

He had seen it.

Something beyond power.

Something beyond systems.

And if he wanted to survive in this world—

He would have to reach that level.

No matter the cost.
