Chapter 19 - Part 19:The Way They Tried

Because sometimes—

understanding someone

is the first step

to meaning something to them.

The energy of the day had shifted.

The beach was no longer the center of attention.

Instead, most of the students had gathered inside the open café near the resort—

a place filled with noise, movement, and warmth.

Music played softly in the background, blending with laughter and conversations.

Stevan rushed in first, almost slipping in his excitement.

"Food!"

Pixel followed behind him, shaking her head slightly.

"You only think about eating."

Stevan turned back with a grin.

"You also eat."

"Not like you," she replied, a faint smile appearing on her face.

Stephan entered a moment later with Johan and Hill.

As soon as they sat down at a nearby table, Johan leaned forward.

"So?" he asked quietly.

Stephan glanced at him. "So what?"

Hill chuckled. "Don't act smart. How's it going?"

Stephan exhaled slowly. "I don't know."

That answer was honest.

For once, he wasn't pretending to have control over the situation.

Johan shook his head. "You won't get anywhere like this."

Stephan leaned back slightly. "Then what do I do?"

Hill smirked. "Find out what she likes."

Johan added, "And don't make it obvious."

"That makes no sense," Stephan said.

Johan smiled. "Exactly."

Meanwhile, on the other side of the café, Daniel had already taken a seat beside Pixel and Stevan.

"So, what are we eating?" he asked casually.

"Everything," Stevan replied immediately.

Daniel laughed. "That sounds about right."

Pixel shook her head slightly. "You're encouraging him."

"He doesn't need encouragement," Daniel said, leaning back comfortably.

A small smile appeared on Pixel's face.

From across the café, Stephan noticed it.

He stood up without saying anything and walked towards the counter.

A few minutes later, he returned with a tray.

He placed one plate in front of Stevan, and another—slightly closer to Pixel.

Not directly in front of her.

Just close enough.

"You didn't pick anything," he said simply.

Pixel looked at the plate, then at him.

"I would've."

"Now you don't have to."

There was no tone in his voice.

No attempt to impress.

Pixel hesitated for a moment… then nodded.

"Thanks."

Daniel noticed everything.

He didn't say anything, but he stood up shortly after and walked towards the counter as well.

When he returned, he placed a drink directly in front of Pixel.

"You missed this."

Pixel accepted it. "Thanks."

Stevan looked between them, confused.

"You both are feeding us like kids."

Daniel smirked. "You are a kid."

"Not her," Stevan said quickly.

Stephan spoke quietly, "He's right."

Pixel looked at both of them, then said calmly,

"I can manage."

But she didn't push anything away.

Ketty arrived and sat beside Pixel, her eyes moving between Stephan and Daniel.

Then she leaned slightly closer to Pixel.

"You're getting special treatment," she whispered.

Pixel gave her a look. "I'm not."

Ketty smiled. "You are."

Pixel didn't respond.

But she didn't deny it either.

A few minutes passed.

The air inside the café grew warmer as more people gathered.

Pixel adjusted her sleeve slightly, clearly uncomfortable.

Without saying anything, Stephan stood up and walked towards the side wall.

He adjusted the fan switch.

Within seconds, the airflow improved.

He returned to his seat like nothing had happened.

Pixel noticed.

She didn't say anything—

but this time, she looked at him for a moment longer than usual.

Daniel leaned slightly forward.

"You don't like crowded places, right?"

Pixel looked at him. "Not really."

"There's a quieter spot behind the café," he said. "You should go there later."

Pixel paused for a moment.

"Maybe."

Stephan heard that.

And for some reason—

it stayed.

Later, he walked back to Johan and Hill again.

"She doesn't like crowds."

Johan smiled. "Good."

Stephan frowned slightly. "What do I do with that?"

Hill leaned forward. "Take her somewhere quieter."

"She won't come if I ask directly."

Johan's smile widened. "Then don't ask directly."

Stephan looked at him.

And this time—

he understood.

As the evening deepened, the café lights turned softer.

The noise faded slightly, replaced by calmer conversations.

Stevan had almost fallen asleep on the chair.

Pixel adjusted his position gently, making sure he was comfortable.

Stephan watched that small moment.

The way she cared—

without making it obvious.

Then suddenly, Stevan murmured, "Water…"

Both Stephan and Daniel reached for it at the same time.

Their hands almost collided.

A brief pause.

Stephan pulled his hand back first.

Daniel handed the bottle to Stevan.

Pixel looked at both of them.

Then said softly,

"You both are doing too much."

Her tone wasn't annoyed.

Just aware.

And that was the moment something shifted.

Not clearly.

Not loudly.

But enough.

Because now—

she had started noticing.

Because once someone starts noticing…

even silence begins to speak.
