The forest fell into a suffocating silence.
Even the raging Ironhide Bear, which had been moments away from collapse, froze as if its instincts were screaming at it to stop moving. The other disciples stood rooted in place, their earlier confidence shattered by the sudden, overwhelming pressure that had descended upon the clearing. This was no longer the chaotic danger of beasts, it was something far colder, far sharper.
Human.
And far more dangerous.
Li Shen's body tensed, not out of fear, but because of the violent reaction surging within him. The armor beneath his skin stirred like never before. The faint golden lines flickered uncontrollably, pulsing with a force he had spent two years trying to suppress. This wasn't the familiar hunger he had come to recognize. This was something else entirely.
Recognition.
"…I've finally found you."
The man's voice was calm, almost casual, as he stepped out from the shadows of the forest. His black coat swayed slightly with each step, and though his face remained partially hidden beneath the brim of his hat, his eyes were clearly locked directly onto Li Shen.
Li Shen didn't move. Didn't speak. But his mind raced.
This man didn't belong here.
"…Who are you?" one of the other disciples finally asked, his voice trembling.
The man didn't even glance at him. His attention never left Li Shen as he stepped closer, studying him with a quiet intensity.
"Interesting," he murmured, tilting his head slightly. "It's reacting even more than expected."
Li Shen's gaze sharpened. "…What do you want?"
The man smiled faintly, as if amused by the question. "What do I want? Isn't it obvious?"
He paused, letting the silence stretch for just a moment.
"You."
The word landed heavily, sending an invisible ripple through the clearing.
Before anyone could react, the man moved.
There was no warning. No buildup. One moment he stood several steps away, and the next
He was gone.
Li Shen's eyes widened just as a crushing force slammed into his side. His body was sent flying across the clearing, skidding violently across the ground before crashing into a tree. The impact knocked the air from his lungs, pain exploding through his body.
Too fast.
He forced himself up immediately, his breathing tightening as he steadied his stance. Across from him, the man stood exactly where he had been before, as if he had never moved at all.
"Too slow," he said calmly.
The other disciples stared in shock, their faces pale.
"That speed… that's not Body Refinement…"
"…Who is he?"
Li Shen ignored them. His focus remained locked on the man in front of him.
"You're not part of the trial," he said, his voice low.
"No," the man replied simply. "I'm not."
He took another step forward, his presence pressing down like an invisible weight.
"I'm what comes after."
Li Shen's eyes narrowed slightly.
"…A hunter."
This time, the man's smile deepened.
"Good," he said. "At least you're not completely ignorant."
The atmosphere tightened instantly. The other disciples began backing away, their fear now impossible to hide.
"We should leave…"
"Run!"
"Go," Li Shen said suddenly.
His voice was calm. Firm.
The disciples hesitated for only a moment before turning and fleeing the clearing without another word.
Within seconds, they were gone.
Only three remained.
Li Shen.
The hunter.
And the Ironhide Bear.
The beast, sensing an opportunity, suddenly roared and charged forward in a frenzy of violence. But it never reached them.
The hunter didn't even look at it.
With a single, casual flick of his hand, the bear's body split apart mid-charge, its massive form collapsing lifelessly to the ground.
Clean... Effortless...
Silence returned once more.
Li Shen's pupils contracted slightly. "…Monster," he muttered.
The hunter chuckled softly. "And yet, you're the one I'm here for."
The pressure in the air intensified. Li Shen could feel it clearly now, the gap between them was absolute. This wasn't a fight he could win.
"…Why me?" Li Shen asked.
The hunter stopped a few steps away, raising a hand and pointing lightly toward Li Shen's chest.
"Because of that."
The armor reacted instantly.
Pain shot through Li Shen's body as the golden lines beneath his skin flared violently. He clenched his teeth, struggling to remain standing.
"…You can sense it," Li Shen said through the pain.
"Of course," the hunter replied. "Do you have any idea what you're carrying?"
Li Shen didn't answer.
Because he didn't know.
The hunter's gaze darkened slightly. "That armor is not something that should exist in this world. It belongs to something far older… far more ancient."
The air grew colder with every word.
"…Then why haven't you taken it already?" Li Shen asked.
The hunter smiled faintly.
"Because it's still choosing."
Li Shen froze. "…Choosing what?"
The hunter's eyes gleamed.
"Its owner."
For a brief moment, everything seemed to stand still.
Then...
The hunter moved again, faster than before.
Li Shen reacted instantly, raising his arms to block but it wasn't enough. The strike landed with overwhelming force, sending him crashing into the ground. The impact cracked the earth beneath him as pain surged through his body.
Blood filled his mouth.
His vision blurred.
"…Pathetic," the hunter said calmly as he approached. "Is this really all you've gained in two years?"
Li Shen tried to stand but his body refused.
The gap between them was too large.
Far too large.
The hunter stepped closer, his shadow falling over Li Shen's broken form.
"Let me see," he said softly. "Will it save you again?"
Li Shen's breathing grew heavier. He could feel it now, the armor stirring violently.
Uncontrollably.
"hmmm…" he muttered weakly.
The golden lines spread rapidly across his body, brighter and hotter than ever before. The ground beneath him began to crack as the energy surged outward.
The hunter's smile widened.
"Yes…"
The air trembled, the forest shook.
Li Shen's body arched as power flooded through him, far beyond what he could contain. Pain and energy intertwined, tearing through him as the golden light consumed everything around him.
His scream echoed through the forest.
And in that moment, something deep within the armor
Awakened.
