Chapter 11 - The Setup

Something was off.

Elena felt it the moment she stepped into the office the next morning.

The air was too still.

Too quiet.

Too… aware.

People greeted her.

Politely.

Respectfully.

But their eyes—

Didn't match.

They lingered.

Watched.

Measured.

Like they were waiting for something to happen.

You're being targeted.

Adrian's words from yesterday echoed in her mind.

Her fingers tightened slightly around the folder she was holding.

No.

She wouldn't panic.

She wouldn't give them what they wanted.

"Mrs. Blackwood."

The voice came from her right.

Elena turned.

A woman stood there.

Mid-thirties.

Professional.

Composed.

But her smile—

Didn't reach her eyes.

"I'm Laura," she said.

"Executive assistant."

Elena nodded slightly.

"Elena is fine."

"Of course," Laura replied smoothly.

A pause.

Then—

"Mr. Blackwood asked me to assist you today."

That made Elena pause.

"Assist me with what?"

Laura's smile widened.

"Learning."

The conference room was smaller this time.

More controlled.

More private.

Only a few people inside.

Which somehow made it worse.

Because now—

Every detail mattered more.

"You'll review these," Laura said, placing a stack of documents in front of her.

Contracts.

Reports.

Numbers.

Elena frowned slightly.

"I'm not trained for this."

"You'll learn."

The same words again.

Always the same.

She took a breath.

Then started reading.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Trying to make sense of things that didn't come naturally to her.

Minutes passed.

Then—

Something caught her attention.

A number.

Off.

Just slightly.

But enough.

Her brows pulled together.

"This doesn't look right," she said.

Laura glanced over.

"Which part?"

"This figure," Elena pointed.

"It doesn't match the earlier report."

Laura leaned in.

Her expression didn't change.

"Are you sure?"

Elena hesitated.

"I think so."

That was enough.

"Then correct it," Laura said.

Elena blinked.

"What?"

"You noticed it," Laura replied calmly.

"So fix it."

Something about that—

Didn't feel right.

But still—

She picked up the pen.

Adjusted the number.

Signed the bottom.

Done.

"Good," Laura said.

Too quickly.

Too easily.

An hour later—

Everything exploded.

"Elena Carter."

The voice was sharp.

Loud.

The entire room stilled.

Elena looked up.

The same man from yesterday.

Standing.

Angry.

"This document—"

He slammed it on the table.

"—was approved under your name."

Her stomach dropped.

"What?"

"This deal is incorrect."

His voice rose.

"Do you even understand what you signed?"

Eyes turned.

All of them.

Watching.

Waiting.

"I—" she started.

But nothing came out.

Because suddenly—

Everything connected.

The number.

The correction.

The signature.

This wasn't a mistake.

It was a trap.

"I was told to review it," she said quickly.

"By who?"

Her eyes flickered.

Laura.

But—

Laura was gone.

Silence filled the room.

Heavy.

Unforgiving.

"So you signed something you didn't fully understand?"

The accusation hit hard.

Direct.

Public.

Damaging.

"I—"

There was no answer.

Because anything she said—

Would make it worse.

"Unbelievable," the man muttered.

"This is exactly what happens when personal decisions interfere with business."

The words were aimed at Adrian.

Not her.

But the damage—

Was hers.

"This deal could cost millions."

Millions.

Her chest tightened.

She couldn't breathe.

"I didn't—"

"You signed it."

The interruption was immediate.

Final.

And just like that—

She understood something.

They weren't trying to test her.

They were trying to destroy her.

The door opened.

Silence fell instantly.

Adrian walked in.

And everything—

Everything—

Shifted.

His gaze moved across the room.

Then—

Stopped on her.

Just for a second.

Then—

On the document.

"What happened?"

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

"This," the man said, pushing the file forward.

"Your wife approved a faulty deal."

Silence.

Heavy.

Adrian picked up the document.

Read it.

Once.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Then—

He looked at Elena.

And for the first time—

She felt it.

Not control.

Not coldness.

Something sharper.

Disappointment.

Her chest tightened painfully.

"I didn't know," she said quietly.

The room waited.

Because this—

This moment—

Would decide everything.

Adrian held her gaze.

Long.

Unmoving.

Unreadable.

Then—

He spoke.

"Everyone out."

The words dropped like a command.

No one argued.

No one hesitated.

Because when Adrian Blackwood said those words—

You left.

The room emptied.

Quickly.

Silently.

Until it was just the two of them.

And the mistake.

And the silence.

Heavy.

"You signed it."

His voice was quieter now.

But worse.

Much worse.

"Yes."

A pause.

"Why?"

Her throat went dry.

"I thought I was helping."

Silence.

Then—

A slow exhale.

"That's the problem."

Her chest tightened.

"You thought."

The words hit harder than anything else.

Because they weren't loud.

They weren't angry.

They were cold.

And final.

Elena stood there.

Heart racing.

Mind spinning.

Because for the first time—

She realized something terrifying.

In his world—

Making a mistake…

Was worse than being weak.

It was unforgivable.

And now—

She had made one.
