Chapter 19 - Ch18- Morning After...

Chapter 18 — After the Storm

Morning came slowly to the desert.

The storm had finally passed.

The Sahara was quiet again.

Soft sunlight spread across the sand dunes, turning the endless desert golden.

But the camp looked like a battlefield.

Broken poles.

Half-buried ropes.

Sand everywhere.

And in the middle of it all stood the small torn shelter the students had built in the storm.

Inside and around the tent—

everyone had fallen asleep wherever they could.

Some were lying on the sand.

Some leaned against poles.

Some had fallen asleep sitting.

The exhaustion from the night had claimed them all.

Almost everyone.

Except a few.

Near the entrance of the tent, Zein, Ace, Allison, Race, Matt, and Mia were still awake.

They had stayed awake the entire night.

Watching.

Guarding.

Talking quietly.

Inside the shelter—

Care still lay on the ground, her head bandaged with cloth stained faintly yellow from the turmeric paste.

Cole had fallen asleep sitting beside her.

His hand still holding hers.

He hadn't let go even once.

Not even in his sleep.

A few steps away, Lyra had curled up against Alex's shoulder, both of them asleep.

Ash slept beside them.

Across the shelter, Thyme and Gorya had fallen asleep side by side, leaning against one of the poles.

Outside the tent—

Keifer had fallen asleep sitting against the sand ridge.

And JJ…

JJ was lying with her head resting on Keifer's laptop bag, her arm across it like a pillow.

The quiet morning air felt almost unreal after the chaos of the storm.

Zein looked around at everyone.

His voice was quiet.

"Hard to believe."

Ace leaned against the pole beside him.

"Believe what?"

Zein gestured around.

"That we ended up like this."

Matt let out a small tired laugh.

"Sleeping in the desert with strangers."

Mia shook her head slowly.

"They don't feel like strangers."

Allison nodded.

"They really don't."

Race looked toward the shelter where the others slept.

"Last night…"

He paused.

"They didn't hesitate to help us."

Ace looked toward Care.

"She didn't even think."

Matt crossed his arms.

"She promised to help us escape from Hell University after knowing us for barely a few hours."

Zein spoke quietly.

"She didn't even ask what it would cost her."

Allison looked at Care thoughtfully.

"She's strange."

Mia tilted her head.

"How?"

Allison answered softly.

"She's fierce."

Race added,

"Bold."

Zein finished the thought.

"But empty inside."

They all looked toward Care again.

Her face looked peaceful in sleep.

But something about her expression carried a quiet loneliness.

Ace's gaze shifted toward Cole.

"And him?"

Matt glanced at Cole's sleeping figure.

"He hasn't moved from her side."

Mia noticed the way his hand still held Care's.

"Protective."

Zein nodded slowly.

"But he shows nothing."

Race smirked faintly.

"That kind of silence usually means a lot more than words."

Before anyone could say more—

A loud voice suddenly shattered the peaceful morning.

"WAKE UP YOU DEAD PEOPLE!"

Everyone flinched.

Percy stood in the middle of the camp, clapping his hands loudly.

"Rise and shine!"

He kicked a small pile of sand toward Keifer.

Keifer woke instantly.

"What the—"

Percy grinned.

"Good morning sunshine."

Keifer glared at him.

"I will bury you in this desert."

Percy ignored him and walked toward the tent.

He crouched beside JJ.

"Baby sistah."

JJ groaned.

"Percy…"

Percy poked her shoulder.

"Wake up."

JJ threw sand at him without opening her eyes.

"Go away."

Around them people slowly started waking up.

Alex stretched.

"Ow…"

Lyra blinked sleepily.

"What time is it?"

Gorya rubbed her eyes.

"I feel like a ghost."

MJ groaned.

"I think I died yesterday."

Ren sat up slowly.

"My back agrees."

Meanwhile Percy kept moving around like a chaotic alarm clock.

He nudged Endrix.

"Wake up."

Endrix shoved him away.

Cin sat up with messy hair.

"What happened?"

Ash woke next.

Then—

A soft groan came from the center of the shelter.

Everyone froze.

Care moved slightly.

Her fingers tightened weakly.

Cole woke instantly.

His eyes snapped open.

"Care?"

Care slowly opened her eyes.

The sunlight filtered through the torn canvas above.

Her head throbbed.

"Ugh…"

Lyra immediately crawled toward her.

"CARE!"

Ash rushed beside her too.

"Care can you hear us?"

Care blinked slowly.

Her eyes focused.

She saw everyone around her.

All of them.

Lyra.

Ash.

Cole.

JJ.

The others.

All looking worried.

All staying beside her.

Her chest tightened slightly.

Emotion rose in her throat.

"You… all stayed…"

Lyra hugged her carefully.

"Of course we stayed."

JJ wiped her eyes.

"You idiot… you scared us."

Care laughed weakly.

Then winced.

"My head…"

Ash checked the bandage.

"The bleeding stopped."

Cole helped her sit up slowly.

"Don't move too fast."

Care looked at him briefly.

Then around the group again.

Everyone had helped her.

Everyone had stayed.

Something inside her softened.

For the first time since the storm—

she smiled.

Later That Morning

The group walked toward the camp administration cottage, which stood nearly 10 kilometers away.

Care walked slowly with Lyra and Ash supporting her on both sides.

When they reached the cottage, the camp doctor examined her.

"You have a head injury and possible back strain."

He looked serious.

"You should go home."

Lyra nodded quickly.

"Yes."

Ash agreed.

"You should rest."

Care immediately shook her head.

"No."

The doctor frowned.

"This isn't negotiable."

Care crossed her arms stubbornly.

"I'm staying."

The doctor sighed.

"These students…"

After finishing the check-up, he eventually left.

Now only Care, Lyra and Ash remained in the room.

Lyra turned to her immediately.

"Care, he's right."

Ash nodded.

"You nearly got crushed last night."

Care leaned back in the chair calmly.

Then she spoke quietly.

"You both know something."

Lyra frowned.

"What?"

Care's voice turned steady.

"Phoenix has had worse injuries."

Lyra and Ash both froze.

They knew that name.

Phoenix.

Care's underground identity.

The fearless leader.

Care continued calmly.

"And Phoenix never quit."

Her eyes were sharp now.

"She never will."

Ash sighed deeply.

"You're impossible."

Lyra shook her head but smiled faintly.

"Just promise you'll take care."

Care nodded once.

"I will."

Later

The camp administration finally gave them new strong tents.

And two days of food supplies.

Everyone looked relieved.

The group then separated for showers.

Inside the girls' bathroom cottage—

The atmosphere quickly turned chaotic again.

Lyra groaned under the water.

"I swear sand came out of my hair."

Gorya laughed.

"Same."

JJ washed her hair carefully.

"My arms still hurt from last night."

Ash leaned against the wall.

"Still better than sleeping in sand."

Care stood quietly under the shower.

Warm water running down her hair.

The tension from the storm slowly washing away.

Nearby the girls continued talking and laughing.

Across the building—

the boys' side was equally chaotic.

Percy shouted,

"WHO USED ALL THE HOT WATER?"

MJ yelled back,

"NOT ME!"

Alex groaned.

"I still feel sand in my shoes."

Ren shook his head.

"This camp is insane."

Cole stood silently near the sink.

Thinking.

About last night.

About the moment Care almost…

He stopped that thought.

Across the room Keifer noticed him.

But said nothing.

Outside—

The desert was calm again.

But something had changed among the twenty-five students.

After surviving the storm together—

they were no longer just students from different universities.

They were becoming something else.

Something stronger.
