Chapter 3 - Chapter 3: Between Equations and Emotions

Before anyone even realized how quickly time had passed, the school examination days had finally arrived. The atmosphere in the school had completely changed. The usual laughter and playful noise in the corridors had turned into whispers of revision, last-minute discussions, and nervous anticipation. Every student seemed to be carrying not just books, but also a mixture of fear, hope, and determination.

On the first day of the exams, everyone came to school as usual, but there was something different in their expressions. Some looked confident, some looked worried, and some were pretending to be calm while silently battling anxiety inside. Teachers walked around with serious faces, reminding everyone to maintain discipline and focus.

According to the routine, the exams continued day after day. Each subject brought its own challenges, but there was one day everyone seemed particularly tense about—Wednesday, the Mathematics exam.

Mathematics was not just another subject. For many students, it was the most feared one. Numbers, formulas, and complicated problems often made even the brightest students nervous. In their class, there were 25 students who had chosen Mathematics, and all of them were preparing in their own ways.

Some were revising formulas repeatedly. Some were solving practice problems until the last moment. Others were simply sitting quietly, trying to calm their minds.

The most surprising part was that the exam was being held in Room No. 14—the same classroom where they had spent so many joyful days together. The same room where friendships had grown, jokes had been shared, and memories had been created was now about to witness one of their most serious moments.

The exam was scheduled from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. As usual, students started arriving early. By 10:30 a.m., most of them had already gathered outside the classroom.

Among them were Sanjib and Megha.

Sanjib stood near the window, holding his admit card and a pen in his hand. He looked calm on the outside, but inside, he was carefully revising important formulas in his mind. Mathematics had always been one of his strongest subjects, but even then, exams always brought a little pressure.

Megha walked toward him slowly. She looked a bit nervous, her fingers tightly holding her notebook.

"Hey Sanjib! Are you ready for the exam?" she asked, trying to sound casual.

Sanjib looked at her and gave a small smile.

"Hmm… I'm somewhat prepared. What about you?"

Megha sighed softly.

"Me? Leave me out of this. You know very well how weak I am in mathematics," she said shyly, looking down.

Sanjib immediately shook his head.

"Who told you that you're weak in math? Don't say such things about yourself," he replied in a gentle but confident tone.

Megha looked up at him, a little surprised by his words. There was something about the way he spoke that made her feel slightly better.

"Alright then," she said with a small smile. "Just stay calm and do the exam well. Best of luck."

"Thank you," Sanjib said. "Best of luck to you too."

There was a brief silence between them, but it wasn't uncomfortable. It felt warm—like a quiet understanding that didn't need words.

Exactly at 11 a.m., the bell rang, and the exam began.

The students entered Room No. 14 and took their seats. The invigilator distributed the question papers, and for a moment, the entire room fell into complete silence.

As soon as the papers were turned over, the sound of pens touching paper filled the room.

Sanjib quickly scanned the questions. His eyes moved confidently across the page, recognizing familiar patterns and problems. Without wasting time, he began solving them one by one.

Megha, however, was having a different experience.

She stared at the question paper, her heart beating faster. Some questions looked familiar, but others seemed confusing. She tried to start with the easier ones, but even then, her mind kept getting stuck.

Minutes passed. Then more minutes.

The clock on the wall ticked steadily, reminding everyone that time was slipping away.

Nearly two hours passed like this.

Sanjib had already completed most of his paper and was revising his answers. Occasionally, he glanced around the room. When his eyes fell on Megha, he noticed her worried expression.

She was still struggling.

Her pen moved slowly. Sometimes she stopped completely, staring at the paper as if hoping the answers would appear on their own. But despite everything, she didn't ask anyone for help.

She wanted to try on her own.

Sanjib watched her for a moment. He knew she was trying her best, but he could also see how much she was struggling.

After thinking for a few seconds, he quietly tore a loose sheet from his answer booklet where he had solved some extra problems.

Without drawing attention, he slowly extended the sheet toward Megha.

Megha noticed the movement and looked at him, surprised.

Sanjib leaned slightly and whispered,

"Here, take it quickly and finish the problems. There's not much time left. Do whatever you can as fast as possible."

For a moment, Megha hesitated. Then she softly took the sheet.

"Thank you…" she whispered.

With renewed energy, she began writing again. Her confidence improved, and she managed to complete more answers before time ran out.

Finally, the bell rang.

The exam was over.

Students slowly started leaving the room—some relieved, some disappointed, and some still discussing answers.

Outside the classroom, Megha walked up to Sanjib again.

"Thank you… really," she said sincerely.

Sanjib smiled lightly.

"Oh come on, there's nothing to thank me for. You're my best friend. If I don't help you, then who will I help?"

Megha smiled, but then her expression turned thoughtful.

"Okay, but tell me one thing," she said. "How do you solve such difficult math problems so easily? Are there any tricks? Please tell me. Then I won't have to worry about math exams anymore."

Sanjib thought for a moment before replying.

"Scoring marks in mathematics isn't that difficult," he said calmly. "First, you have to believe that in your mind. If you keep thinking you're weak, it will always feel hard."

Megha listened carefully.

"Then," he continued, "you need regular practice. Solve problems every day. And while studying, focus completely. Don't let other thoughts distract you. If you keep doing this, math will slowly become a habit. And once it becomes a habit, it won't feel scary anymore."

Megha's face lit up.

"Really? Then I'll start practicing today!" she said excitedly.

Sanjib laughed softly.

"No, no. Do you remember what exam we have tomorrow?"

Megha suddenly widened her eyes.

"Oh yes! Tomorrow is Chemistry!"

She lightly bit her tongue and laughed.

"Then I must go home and study chemistry today."

They both laughed together.

Then, after a short pause, Megha's expression changed. She looked slightly nervous.

"Can I tell you something honestly?" she said softly.

Sanjib looked at her with curiosity.

"Of course. Go ahead."

Megha hesitated for a second. Then, without overthinking, she spoke.

"I don't know why… but I really like you."

The words came out suddenly.

Sanjib froze for a moment, completely surprised.

"What do you mean?" he asked, his voice slightly shaken.

As soon as Megha realized what she had said, her face turned red.

"I'm sorry!" she said quickly.

Before Sanjib could say anything more, she turned around and ran toward her home, her heart racing with embarrassment.

Sanjib stood there, still processing everything.

He watched her disappear into the distance.

Although he liked Megha too, he had never had the courage to say it. Her sudden confession left him speechless—but also incredibly happy.

That evening, after returning home, Sanjib sat quietly in his room. His books were open, but his mind was somewhere else.

He kept thinking about the day.

The exam…

The conversation…

Her smile…

And those unexpected words.

A soft smile appeared on his face.

He took out his diary—the one where he wrote his personal thoughts—and slowly began writing everything down.

Every moment. Every feeling.

And at the top of the page, he wrote the title:

"A Journey from Books to Hearts"
