Chapter 16 - Rivermount Academy

The grand gates of Rivermount Spirit Academy rose like the jaws of an ancient guardian, carved from pale marble veined with glowing spirit crystals that pulsed softly in time with the distant heartbeat of the Verdant Portal.

Towering walls enclosed sprawling courtyards, training arenas, lecture halls, and towering dormitories that could house hundreds of young cultivators. Compared to the modest stone buildings of Willowreach, this place felt like stepping into another world—one where genius was currency and power was measured in daily increments.

The Willowreach convoy passed through the gates under the watchful eyes of senior proctors wearing deep green uniforms embroidered with silver river sigils. Students from a dozen provincial towns had already arrived, filling the central plaza with a sea of nervous energy and whispered rivalries. Some carried themselves with the arrogance of established talents; others moved with the quiet focus of those who had clawed their way up from smaller academies.

Kai stepped off the wagon and immediately felt the difference in the air. The spirit density here was thicker, richer, as if the academy itself sat atop a natural essence vein. His newly completed third Essence Vein hummed in response, drinking in the ambient power like a sponge. The medallion around his neck warmed slightly, helping contain any accidental leakage.

Senior Instructor Marek gathered the Willowreach group near a large bulletin board covered in glowing runes. "Listen carefully. The Provincial Trial begins tomorrow with opening assessments—affinity testing, basic combat evaluation, and a written exam on spirit beast knowledge and portal lore. Top fifty performers across all groups will advance to the main tournament bracket. Resources, private training chambers, and sponsorship opportunities will be awarded based on ranking. Remember: this is not just about personal glory. Strong performances here may determine who is chosen to reinforce the portals in the coming years."

Marek's eyes swept over the students, lingering on Kai. "Show restraint where necessary… but do not hold back so much that you waste your potential."

As the group dispersed to their assigned dormitories, the real atmosphere of Rivermount became clear. The wide training yards echoed with the sounds of clashing elements—flames roaring, winds howling, stone cracking, water surging. Older students moved with fluid confidence, their spirit cores visible as glowing marks at their throats or wrists. Many cast curious or dismissive glances at the newcomers.

Garrick wasted no time forming alliances. Within the first hour he was laughing loudly with Darius, the tall Stone-affinity boy from the journey, and a few other provincial talents. Their group claimed one of the better outdoor sparring rings, practicing flashy techniques that drew small crowds.

Kai's assigned room was a simple but clean shared chamber with four beds. He placed his small pack on the one nearest the window, overlooking a quiet garden path. Mira took the bed across from him, while Tomas and Lorne claimed the others. Seline had been placed in the girls' wing but promised to meet them for evening training.

That afternoon, the opening resource allocation began. Students lined up at the central administration hall to receive basic trial kits: spirit talismans, healing pills, and access tokens for the shared training facilities. Competition for better slots was immediate.

When Kai stepped forward, the registrar—a stern woman with a Light affinity—scanned his information crystal. Her eyebrows rose slightly. "Shadow affinity… rare. You're assigned to the general training halls for now. Advanced chambers require higher preliminary rankings."

A voice cut in from behind. "General halls? For the boy who broke the testing orb back in Willowreach?"

Garrick stood there with Darius and two other boys, smirking. "Maybe the capital academy is smart enough not to waste premium resources on unstable affinities."

Several nearby students chuckled. The registrar frowned but said nothing.

Kai met Garrick's gaze calmly.

"Resources are earned, not given. I'll manage."

Mira stepped up beside him, her voice cool. "Some of us prefer earning our place rather than relying on noise."

The tension lingered, but the line moved on.

Later that evening, the shared training halls buzzed with activity. Vast indoor arenas allowed students to practice without weather interference. Kai chose a quieter corner ring, away from the main crowds. Mira joined him, along with Tomas.

He started with academy-standard forms to blend in, then gradually incorporated Void Step movements. Shadows flickered subtly at his feet as he practiced Devouring Thread on reinforced training dummies. Each strike drained small amounts of ambient essence, strengthening his control without revealing the full hunger of his affinity.

Mira watched closely, wind gently swirling around her. "You're different here," she murmured during a water break. "More… focused. Like the capital is calling to something inside you."

Kai wiped sweat from his brow. The third vein felt solid now, almost complete in its integration. "Maybe it is. This place has stronger essence flows. It makes training easier."

As night fell, most students returned to the dorms. Kai slipped away for a final solo session in one of the outer gardens, using the cover of darkness to push harder. Silent Eclipse let him merge with the long shadows cast by lanterns, practicing Abyssal Reflection by redirecting practice orbs back at their source.

He was mid-technique when the attack came.

A figure in dark robes stepped out from behind a flowering tree—clearly not a student. The man's eyes glowed with faint violet light, and a small rift tear hovered at his fingertips like a living weapon. Two low-tier corrupted spirit hawks materialized from the tear, diving straight at Kai with unnatural speed.

"You've drawn too much attention, Rift Child," the agent hissed. "The masters grow impatient. Come quietly, or we'll take you broken."

Kai reacted instantly.

The third Essence Vein surged. He vanished into Silent Eclipse, reappearing above one hawk. Devouring Thread lashed out, wrapping the bird and stripping its violet corruption in seconds. The hawk dissolved into purified essence that Kai absorbed, fueling his next move.

The second hawk attacked from behind, but Kai activated Abyssal Reflection. Shadows rose like a mirror, catching the beast's dive and redirecting its own momentum back into it. The creature slammed into the ground with bone-cracking force.

The agent lunged personally, summoning a violet energy blade. "Your shadow will belong to us!"

Kai met the strike head-on. His own condensed shadow blade clashed with the violet one. The two forces devoured each other in a violent burst of dark and purple light. Pain flared through Kai's arm, but the medallion and his strengthened veins held the corruption at bay.

With a final Devouring Thread, he pierced the agent's defenses and drained the violet energy fueling the man's techniques. The agent staggered, the small rift collapsing.

"Tell your masters," Kai said, breathing hard but standing tall, "the shadows here answer to me."

The agent retreated through a desperate tear, vanishing with a curse.

Moments later, Mira appeared at the edge of the garden, wind still swirling around her from a hurried dash. She had clearly sensed the disturbance. Her eyes widened at the scene—withered grass where corruption had touched, lingering traces of violet light fading into nothing.

"You… fought one of them," she whispered. "Not a normal beast. Something worse."

Kai lowered his hands, letting the shadow recede completely. "There are things hunting me, Mira. Things from beyond the portals we know. I didn't choose this power. It chose me."

Mira stood silent for a long moment, the breeze around her calming. Then she stepped closer, her usual cold caution cracking just a little more. "I told you I don't trust easily. But after everything I've seen… I believe you're trying to protect more than just yourself. If those things come again, don't face them alone."

Kai nodded, a quiet warmth settling in his chest. "I won't."

From the shadows of a distant rooftop, Zen watched the entire encounter, his expression a mix of pride and concern. The old butler slipped away unseen, heading deeper into the capital to investigate the growing rift echoes he had been sensing since their arrival.

The next morning, the opening assessments began in the grand central arena.

Hundreds of provincial youths gathered as proctors activated massive testing orbs and combat evaluation arrays. Kai stepped forward when his name was called, keeping his power carefully leashed. The affinity orb flared dramatically at his touch, confirming Shadow once again, but he held back the full resonance.

His combat evaluation was equally measured—he defeated a mid-tier practice construct with efficient but not overwhelming shadow techniques, earning solid but not standout marks.

Still, whispers followed him.

"Shadow affinity… I've never seen one before."

"Supposedly he broke an orb in his home academy."

"Watch him. Unusual usually means trouble."

Garrick and his new allies performed flashier displays, drawing cheers and points. Darius shattered stone dummies with raw power. Yet Kai noticed several stronger talents from other towns watching him with genuine interest rather than mockery.

As the day wore on, the pressure mounted. The main tournament bracket would be announced that evening. Resources for the top performers—including access to the academy's prized Essence Nexus chamber—would be distributed soon.

Kai felt the scout's influence like a shadow at the edge of his senses. The agent's attack had been a warning. The real moves were still coming.

But with Mira's cautious alliance strengthening and his third vein fully awakened, Kai stood taller.

The Provincial Trial was no longer just a test.

It was the beginning of the larger war his parents had prepared him for.
