chapter 6

Episode 6 — Ignition

The checkpoint had changed overnight.

---

Not physically.

---

But in the way people moved.

---

Less hesitation.

More urgency.

---

Groups were forming faster.

Gear was being traded more aggressively.

Even the soldiers weren't as relaxed anymore.

---

Something had shifted.

---

Bram stood near the outer barrier, watching it all unfold.

---

"…you've been standing there for a while."

---

Maya walked up beside him, arms crossed.

---

"…so?"

---

"…so it's weird."

---

He didn't respond.

---

Because he was listening.

---

Not to her.

---

To the patterns.

---

People moving in clusters.

Supplies being redirected.

Whispers spreading faster than orders.

---

"…resource flow increased," someone nearby muttered.

"…yeah, but so did casualties."

---

That was the real change.

---

More people going out.

---

More people not coming back the same.

---

Bram's gaze shifted toward the gate.

---

"…incoming!"

---

The shout cut through the air.

---

The outer doors opened—

And a group stumbled in.

---

Not organized.

Not steady.

---

One collapsed instantly.

Another dragged something behind him—

---

A torn pack.

---

It ripped open as it hit the ground.

---

Fragments scattered.

---

Dark.

Dense.

---

Wrong.

---

The air shifted.

---

Even without touching it—

Bram could feel it.

---

Different from the usual drops.

---

"…what is that?" Maya whispered.

---

"…new," Bram said.

---

A soldier stepped forward quickly.

---

"…where did you get this?"

---

"…ridge… outer ridge…" one of the survivors gasped.

"…it wasn't like before… something changed… something's there now…"

---

"…what kind of something?"

---

"…fast… controlled… not like the others…"

---

Silence.

---

Then:

---

"…mark the location. Send a team."

---

Orders moved instantly.

---

That was new too.

---

No hesitation.

---

No debate.

---

Just action.

---

Bram's eyes didn't leave the fragments.

---

Because now—

---

Something else was happening.

---

Not outside.

---

Inside.

---

---

The moment his focus locked onto the material—

---

Something clicked.

---

Not a sound.

---

Not a voice.

---

A sensation.

---

Like information trying to surface.

---

Incomplete.

---

Unstable.

---

But there.

---

His eyes narrowed slightly.

---

"…you're doing it again," Maya said.

---

"…doing what?"

---

"…that thing where you disappear into your own head."

---

"…because something's there."

---

"…what does that even mean?"

---

He stepped forward.

---

Ignoring her.

---

Ignoring the soldiers.

---

Straight toward the fragments.

---

"…hey—"

---

A soldier moved to block him.

---

"…restricted."

---

Bram didn't stop.

---

"…you don't understand what that is yet."

---

"…neither do you."

---

That made the soldier pause.

---

Just enough.

---

Bram crouched—

---

Picked up a fragment.

---

The moment his fingers made contact—

---

Everything sharpened.

---

Not visually.

---

Mentally.

---

Density.

Structure.

Energy flow.

---

Incomplete—

---

But forming.

---

"…this isn't raw," Bram muttered.

---

"…what?"

---

"…it's been altered."

---

Maya frowned.

---

"…altered how?"

---

"…compressed… stabilized… like it's adapting."

---

That wasn't normal.

---

Monster materials didn't do that.

---

Not like this.

---

The soldier stepped in again.

---

"…put that down."

---

Bram did.

---

Slowly.

---

But his eyes stayed on it.

---

Because now he knew—

---

This wasn't just a resource.

---

---

It was a step forward.

---

---

"…we're going there," he said.

---

Maya blinked.

---

"…no."

---

"…yes."

---

"…did you not hear them?"

---

"…I did."

---

"…people almost died."

---

"…which means they found something worth risking that for."

---

That answer came instantly.

---

Too instantly.

---

Maya stared at him.

---

"…that's not how normal people think."

---

"…good."

---

That shut her up for a second.

---

---

Outside—

Groups were already forming.

---

Moving toward the gate.

---

Fast.

---

No coordination.

Just instinct.

---

Everyone chasing the same thing.

---

---

"…we're not the only ones," Maya said.

---

"…we never are."

---

Bram watched them.

---

Spacing.

Speed.

Direction.

---

Calculating.

---

---

"…then we shouldn't rush in," Maya said.

"…we should wait, see what happens—"

---

"…and fall behind?"

---

"…and not die."

---

"…same thing if you're too slow."

---

She frowned.

---

"…not everything is about getting there first."

---

"…this is."

---

---

He started walking.

---

Toward the gate.

---

No hesitation.

---

---

Maya stayed there for a second.

---

"…you don't even have a plan."

---

"…I do."

---

"…you haven't said anything."

---

"…because you won't follow it."

---

That landed.

---

Harder than expected.

---

"…you don't know that."

---

"…you hesitate."

---

"…I think."

---

"…you delay."

---

A pause.

---

"…that's not the same thing."

---

Bram looked at her.

---

Just for a second.

---

"…out there, it is."

---

Then he kept walking.

---

---

She clenched her jaw slightly.

---

Frustrated.

---

But followed.

---

Of course she did.

---

---

CUT

---

Far from the checkpoint—

---

In a fractured stretch of land—

---

A distortion flickered.

---

Unstable.

---

Then—

---

It tore open.

---

Silently.

---

Two figures stepped through.

---

Not rushing.

---

Not cautious.

---

Just… observing.

---

"…this isn't Asherland."

---

"…no."

---

One knelt—

Touched the ground.

---

Paused.

---

"…the energy is thinner."

---

"…but structured."

---

They looked up.

---

Far in the distance—

Movement.

---

Groups.

---

Organized.

---

Carrying tools.

---

Weapons.

---

"…they're not beasts."

---

"…no."

---

A pause.

---

"…they build."

---

That changed things.

---

---

Another figure stepped through the rift behind them.

---

"…orders?"

---

Silence.

---

Then:

---

"…observe first."

---

"…and if they interfere?"

---

A beat.

---

"…then we test them."

---

---

CUT BACK

---

The gates opened again.

---

This time—

Bram walked through.

---

Not alone.

---

Not first.

---

But not behind either.

---

Right where he needed to be.

---

---

Ahead—

The outer ridge waited.

---

Unknown.

---

Unstable.

---

Full of movement.

---

---

And for the first time—

---

Bram smiled.

---

Not wide.

---

Not obvious.

---

But real.

---

Because now—

---

Everything had changed.

---

Resources.

Competition.

Threats.

---

And most importantly—

---

Opportunity.

---

---

"Once something evolves…

everything that survives it has to evolve too."
