Chapter 23 - Chapter 23: The Price of Power

The palace corridors were quieter than usual, the kind of silence that pressed against the skin like a warning. Liora moved through them with her usual grace, yet every instinct told her something was off. Servants moved about their duties, guards remained vigilant, and nobles whispered behind ornate fans—but all seemed too calm. Everything looked normal, and that was exactly the danger.

Eveline arrived at her side, breathless and wide-eyed. "Milady… there's trouble. Lord Malric collapsed during a private meeting. Poison is suspected." Liora's eyes narrowed, a flicker of controlled anger passing over her features before she masked it with composure. Her mind raced, analyzing every possibility. Selene… you've crossed the line.

"Alive?" Liora asked, her voice steady but sharp.

"Barely," Eveline replied, her hands trembling slightly. "And… the meeting records show your name. It's being framed to look like you orchestrated it."

A cold current ran through Liora's veins. She could feel the court's attention sharpening like blades, the nobles' eyes ready to judge. Yet she remained outwardly calm, every inch the composed, intelligent villainess everyone feared. "Then we act immediately," she said softly. "Evidence, counter-narrative, and loyalty. Nothing leaves the palace without scrutiny."

Seraphine appeared beside her, nodding, her own worry hidden behind determination. "I will retrace the minutes, gather testimony, and ensure the records reflect the truth. No one will doubt your innocence if we act quickly."

By the afternoon, Liora had orchestrated a subtle countermeasure. Key nobles were presented with "accidental" glimpses of the corrected records and statements from the clerks and advisors. Everything pointed subtly toward Selene's interference, exposing the Princess's reckless ambition without Liora ever speaking a word of accusation. Whispers shifted. Doubt crept into Selene's influence, and a sense of unease began to ripple through her carefully constructed network.

Later, as the sun dipped below the palace towers, Liora found herself walking in the gardens with Crown Prince Arion. His eyes were sharp, yet a faint edge of admiration softened his gaze. "You've turned what could have been disaster into advantage," he said quietly. "Few could remain this composed under such circumstances."

"I anticipated her move," Liora replied evenly. "Selene believes she can strike through my allies, but loyalty and preparation are stronger than her schemes." She let her eyes sweep the moonlit fountains, each one reflecting the careful order she maintained over the palace.

Arion's gaze lingered on her, softening further. "And yet… even knowing your mind, I am captivated by how effortlessly you turn danger into control."

Liora met his gaze, a faint, private smile tugging at her lips. "Captivation is a luxury I cannot afford. Influence and survival are necessities. Still… a distraction for tonight is acceptable."

He allowed a quiet smile in return, the tension between them almost tangible. "Then I will remain close… watching, perhaps assisting where I can."

As Liora returned to her chambers, she allowed herself a brief, private moment of reflection. Selene's attacks were escalating, becoming bolder and more dangerous, but Liora's mastery of palace intrigue was growing in tandem. Every move her rival made only tightened the web of influence and perception she had woven. The battle for power, loyalty, and survival had intensified—and Liora Valerien was ready, several steps ahead.

Somewhere in the shadows of the palace, Selene was already plotting her next move, unaware that the threads she tried to pull were already binding her tighter.
