Chapter 10 - Chapter 10: The Glass Cage of the Capital

The moonlight over Eldoria was a cold, indifferent silver, filtering through the reinforced glass of the Imperial library. Kaelen stood where the "Administrator" had vanished, the air still smelling of ozone and burnt paper. The "Hard Mode" notification flickered in his peripheral vision, a jagged red pulse that felt like a needle in his brain.

[System Notification: 'Hard Mode' Adjustment...]

[Detection Wards in Eldoria increased by 200%.]

[Target 'Seraphina's' Willpower increased: +15.]

[New Threat: 'The Eye of the Emperor' is now tracking your mana signature.]

Kaelen's grip on his ebony cane tightened until the wood groaned. The game had changed. He wasn't just a predator in a forest anymore; he was a shark in a glass tank, and the people outside the glass were starting to tap on it.

"Kaelen?" Elara's voice was a whisper, her hand resting on the hilt of a concealed dagger she had taken from the Palace armory. "Who was that? He didn't feel... human."

"He wasn't," Kaelen said, his voice returning to its cold, measured cadence. "He's a scavenger. Someone who watches the 'Players' and picks the bones of the losers. It doesn't matter. If the Administrators want a show, I'll give them one they'll never forget."

He turned away from the spot, his eyes landing on the wine carafe where he had dropped the [Abyssal Seed]. The liquid was still settling, the dark orb completely dissolved.

"Go to bed, Elara," Kaelen commanded. "Tomorrow, Seraphina will wake up feeling a 'shadow' over her heart. She will come to me for answers. Be ready to play the grieving sister. We need her to feel that we are the only ones who understand her 'illness'."

The next morning, the Princess's estate was eerily quiet. The usual bustle of servants and the clinking of silver breakfast trays was replaced by a heavy, suffocating tension.

Kaelen sat in the sun-drenched breakfast nook, feeding a piece of bread to a small, colorful bird that had landed on the windowsill. Beside him, Leo sat in his usual catatonic state, his eyes fixed on a distant point on the horizon. To anyone watching, Kaelen looked like a man at peace.

Then, the doors burst open.

Princess Seraphina entered, her hair disheveled and her face as pale as bone. Her eyes were bloodshot, and she was clutching her silk robe as if she were freezing, despite the morning heat.

"Kaelen," she rasped, her voice trembling. "I... I need to speak with you. Alone."

Kaelen stood up, bowing with exaggerated grace. "Your Highness? You look unwell. Did the night not bring you rest?"

"Rest?" she laughed, a jagged, hysterical sound. "I saw... I saw the Capital in flames. I saw my brothers standing over my bed with knives. I saw the Great Tree's black ash filling my lungs until I couldn't scream. It felt so real, Kaelen. I can still smell the smoke."

[System Notification: Target 'Seraphina' is experiencing 'Incipient Paranoia'.]

[Despair Points Harvested: 600]

[Shadow Seed Maturation: 5%]

Kaelen stepped closer, his face a mask of deep, soulful concern. He reached out, his fingers barely brushing her sleeve. "The 'Martyr's Burden', Princess. I told you... the shadows of the border follow those who seek the truth. You have opened your mind to the reality of the Abyss, and it is trying to break you."

"Help me," she whispered, her diamond-sharp eyes finally cracking. "You've lived through it. You've seen the monsters. How do you keep them out?"

"You don't keep them out," Kaelen said, his voice dropping to a low, hypnotic hum. "You master them. You use the fear to sharpen your instincts. But you cannot do it alone. Your brothers... the Chancellor... they will see your 'nightmares' as weakness. They will use them to replace you."

[System Notification: Skill Trigger - 'Silver Tongue of the Damned' + 'Soul-Bound Possession'.]

[Effect: The target now views the MC as her 'Psychological Anchor'.]

"I can't let them know," she said, her grip tightening on his arm. "If the Emperor hears I'm losing my mind, he'll marry me off to a northern warlord just to keep me quiet."

"Then let me be your shield," Kaelen said, his purple eyes flashing for a split second. "I will manage your public image. I will vet your inner circle. I will be the one to stand between you and the 'dreams'. In exchange, I only ask for total access to the Imperial Archive. There are... secrets there that might help us find the source of these shadows."

Seraphina hesitated for a heartbeat, her natural suspicion fighting against the crushing weight of the [Abyssal Seed] in her soul. But another flash of a nightmare—the image of her brother's cold smile—sent her over the edge.

"Fine," she gasped. "The Archive. The Guards. Everything. Just... make the dreams stop."

[System Notification: Target 'Seraphina' has granted 'Imperial Clearance'.]

[Quest Progress: 'The Princess's Puppet' -> 'The Architect of the Throne'.]

By noon, Kaelen was standing in the heart of the Imperial Archive, a subterranean vault beneath the Palace that contained every record of the Empire's history. The air was cold and smelled of ancient dust and lead.

"Search for 'The First Hero' and 'The Administrator Paradox'," Kaelen commanded the System.

[Searching... Accessing Restricted Files...]

[Warning: These files are 'System-Censored'. Attempting to bypass...]

While the System worked, Kaelen felt a presence behind him. He didn't turn around. He knew the smell of iron and expensive cologne.

"It's a long way from the mud of Oakhaven to the Emperor's Vault, isn't it, Kaelen?"

Kaelen turned. It was the First Prince, Valerius. He was a man of golden hair and massive frame, a true warrior who had spent his life on the front lines. Unlike the Princess, he didn't use subtle magic; he used raw, overwhelming strength.

"Prince Valerius," Kaelen said, bowing. "I am merely researching the history of the monsters that took my home. The Princess thought it might be... educational."

Valerius stepped into the light, his hand resting on the hilt of a sword that radiated a blinding, holy aura. "My sister is a fool. She thinks she can tame a stray dog by feeding it scraps. But I see you, 'Saint'. I see the way the shadows move when you walk. You don't smell like a martyr. You smell like the things I kill for sport."

[System Warning: Target 'Valerius' is a 'Holy Knight' Level 45.]

[Skill Active: 'Eye of Judgement'.]

[Status: Your 'Abyssal Cloak' is being strained.]

Kaelen leaned on his cane, his expression innocent. "A dog is only a threat if it's hungry, Your Highness. And I am very, very full of the grief I've seen."

Valerius laughed, a booming sound that echoed through the stone vaults. "Enjoy your books while you can. My sister's 'illness' has not gone unnoticed. If she cannot fulfill her duties, I will take her place as the Empire's Sword. And the first thing I'll do is clean the 'shadows' out of my Palace."

He walked past Kaelen, the holy aura of his sword causing Kaelen's skin to itch with a dull, burning sensation.

[System Notification: Bypass Complete.]

[Hidden File Accessed: 'The Cycle of the Harvest'.]

Kaelen ignored the Prince and focused on the flickering screen in his mind. The file contained a single, terrifying paragraph:

"The Hero is the Seed. The Villain is the Scythe. The world is the Field. When the Despair reaches the threshold, the Scythe harvests the Field to feed the Administrators. There have been 99 Harvests. The 100th begins with the fall of the Star."

Kaelen's breath hitched. He looked at Leo, who was standing by the door, a broken 'Star' on his chest.

I'm not just a player, Kaelen thought, a cold realization washing over him. I'm the Scythe. And Leo... Leo was the Seed they wanted me to cut.

But Kaelen wasn't a tool. He had been a tool in his first life, and he had died for it. If the Administrators wanted a harvest, he would give them one—but he wouldn't be the one to hand over the grain.

"System," Kaelen whispered. "Can I harvest an Administrator?"

[System Response: ERROR. Query is 'Heresy'.]

[Warning: Difficulty increased to 'Extreme Mode'.]

"Good," Kaelen smiled, his purple eyes glowing with a feral, defiant light. "I was getting bored of the Princess anyway."

He looked at the next shelf of books. He needed something bigger than a nightmare. He needed a way to turn the entire city into a 'Hollow Kingdom' before Valerius could draw his sword.

"Elara," Kaelen called out through their soul-link. "Tell the Princess I've found a cure for her dreams. But it requires the 'Blood of a Royal Brother' to stabilize."

The game was no longer about revenge. It was about Ascension.
