Chapter 3 - Fox in the garden

David couldn't take it anymore.

After another hour of Lira's relentless teasing — her tail "accidentally" brushing against his leg while she rearranged furniture, her playful comments about how cute he looked when flustered, and the way she kept drawing out his name like it was the most entertaining game in the world — he finally reached his breaking point.

"I… need some air," he announced abruptly, standing up from the couch so fast he nearly tripped over one of her coils. "Just a short break. In the backyard grove. By myself."

Lira looked up from where she was lounging gracefully across half the living room, golden eyes twinkling with amusement. One loop of her long tail rested casually near his feet.

"Of course, Daaavid," she purred, resting her chin on her hand. "Take all the time you need. I'll be right here… waiting patiently for you to come back inside~"

David didn't trust himself to reply. He grabbed a light jacket, slipped out the back door, and closed it firmly behind him.

The moment the latch clicked shut, he let out a huge, shaky breath he didn't realize he'd been holding. The afternoon sun filtered through the leaves of the small grove in his backyard — a peaceful cluster of old trees and enchanted shrubs he had carefully tended over the years. It wasn't a large forest, just a quiet, secluded pocket of green behind his house, with soft moss underfoot and dappled sunlight creating shifting patterns on the ground. Mana-infused lavender and glowing herbs grew in neat patches between the trees, their faint blue light pulsing gently in response to his presence.

Birds sang softly overhead. The air smelled like fresh earth, pine, and growing things. No coils. No teasing golden eyes. No constant feeling of being watched and playfully tormented.

Finally. Peace.

David walked a little deeper into the grove, the soft crunch of leaves and twigs under his shoes the only sound. He rubbed his temples, trying to calm his racing heart.

"Okay… okay. This is fine. She's just one lamia. I can handle this. I just need to set some boundaries when I go back inside. Polite but firm. No more letting her pin me on the couch. No more letting her tail follow me everywhere. I'll tell her the basement is off-limits and—"

He stopped mid-sentence, realizing he was talking to himself like a lunatic again.

He crouched down beside a patch of glowing lavender, letting the familiar sight soothe him. The plants brightened slightly at his touch — a small, comforting reminder of the quiet life he used to have before the Integration Program turned everything upside down.

For a blissful thirty seconds, the only sounds were the gentle rustle of leaves and the distant hum of mana-rails far away in the city.

Then he felt it.

A soft puff of warm air against the back of his neck.

"Gotcha~"

Before David could even turn around, three fluffy, orange-tipped tails suddenly wrapped around his waist from behind — soft and light, but surprisingly effective at holding him in place. A fourth tail brushed playfully against his cheek.

David stiffened like a statue.

"Hi hi! You looked like you really needed a break!"

The voice was bright, energetic, and full of mischief.

A girl hopped into view from behind him, keeping her three fluffy golden-orange tails loosely but securely wrapped around his waist. Vibrant orange-red hair framed a cute, expressive face with large golden-yellow eyes and perky fox ears. She wore a trendy mix of modern streetwear and shrine accents — a cropped black hoodie with white and red details, short pleated skirt, and thigh straps that made David's brain immediately malfunction.

Kana Foxheart grinned widely, tails swishing with excitement.

"I'm Kana! Nice to finally meet you! The Liminal Integration Program just assigned me here. Low-density zone, high-mana balance, all that official stuff. So… surprise! New roommate incoming!"

David's mouth opened. Closed. Opened again.

Internal monologue:

Another one?! How?! I just stepped outside for air! I've never seen this girl in my life! Why do monster girls keep appearing and wrapping their tails around me?! This can't be happening!

He finally managed a strangled, "W-Who—?! I don't know you! I've never met you before! What are you doing in my backyard?!"

Kana tilted her head cutely, one ear twitching. Her tails tightened just a little, pulling him closer in a playful hug from behind.

"Aww, don't be so surprised! The Program works fast when they find a good match. I'm here to help balance things out by staying with you for a while. We're gonna have so much fun! I'll cook, I'll play games, I'll make sure you smile every day!"

She was still beaming, completely unaware of the other resident inside the house, when the back door slid open.

Lira Voss stepped out gracefully, her long black hair catching the sunlight. Her golden eyes narrowed slightly the moment she saw the fluffy orange tails wrapped around David's waist and the energetic kitsune girl hugging him from behind.

For a brief second, something flashed across Lira's elegant face — a flicker of jealousy that quickly smoothed into a cool, polite smile. Her tail flicked once with clear irritation.

"Oh?" Lira's voice was smooth, but there was a new edge beneath the usual teasing tone. "I see you've already found some company during your little break, Daaavid."

Kana's ears perked up in surprise. She peeked around David's shoulder and blinked at the elegant lamia. "Whoa! You have a lamia too? Hi! I'm Kana! Nice to meet you!"

Lira's smile didn't waver, but her tail flicked again, this time more sharply. She slithered closer, her own powerful 15-foot tail moving with deliberate grace until it gently but firmly brushed against Kana's fluffy ones, as if staking a quiet claim.

"How… unexpected," Lira said, voice dripping with honeyed politeness. "The Program really doesn't waste any time, does it? I was just getting comfortable settling in."

Kana, still oblivious to the sudden tension, grinned even wider. "This is awesome! We can all live together! Three roommates! It'll be like one big happy house!"

David stood frozen between the two monster girls — one elegant and poised with a dangerous smile, the other bubbly and energetic with twitching ears and swishing tails — both now looking at him with clear interest.

Lira's golden eyes locked onto Kana's with a subtle competitive glint. "Indeed. A big happy house. I do hope you don't mind sharing space… little fox."

Kana's tails puffed up slightly in response. Her golden eyes sparkled with playful defiance as she finally picked up on the undercurrent. "Sharing? Of course not! I'm great at sharing~ Especially cute, shy humans who need lots of attention!"

The two monster girls stared at each other over David's shoulders — Lira elegant and slightly possessive, Kana bubbly and ready to compete.

A quiet rivalry had sparked in an instant.

David could only stand there in the middle of his peaceful backyard grove, face burning brighter than any mana crystal, trapped between soft fluffy tails and the growing tension in the air.

His short escape to the grove had lasted less than ten minutes.

And things were about to get a lot louder — and a lot more complicated — inside his once-quiet house.
