The world was beautiful.
That was the first thing Aurelia noticed.
There were no ruined kingdoms.
No black rivers.
No red moon.
No kings.
No monsters.
The sky was blue.
The streets were full of sunlight.
Children ran through gardens.
People laughed.
For the first time, Aurelia saw a world that had never known fear.
Then she saw herself.
Not as a queen.
Not as an architect.
Not as a prisoner of the cycle.
Just a woman walking through a marketplace.
Alive.
Free.
Happy.
Aurelia smiled.
Then she saw who was walking beside her.
A stranger.
Not Veyne.
Her smile disappeared.
Veyne stood beside her.
He stared at the other version of Aurelia.
"She looks happy."
"She is."
He was quiet.
The boy walked toward them.
"This world has no cycle."
Aurelia looked at him.
"Then why is it here?"
"Because it was possible."
Aurelia watched herself laugh with the stranger.
She felt something strange.
Not jealousy.
Grief.
This Aurelia had never known Veyne.
She had never suffered because of him.
She had never lost him.
She had never searched across lifetimes for him.
She had simply lived.
Veyne looked at Aurelia.
"You could stay."
She looked at him.
"What?"
"You could live here."
"And you?"
He smiled faintly.
"This world doesn't need me."
Aurelia shook her head.
"I don't want a world without you."
Veyne looked toward the alternate Aurelia.
"Even if that version of you is happier?"
Aurelia answered:
"Happiness isn't the same thing as being free."
The boy suddenly turned.
The peaceful world began cracking.
People stopped moving.
The sky darkened.
Aurelia looked around.
"What is happening?"
The boy whispered:
"The world is rejecting you."
"Why?"
"Because you chose against it."
The beautiful city began dissolving.
The alternate Aurelia looked directly at her.
For one terrifying moment, she seemed to recognize her.
Then she whispered:
"Don't make my life meaningless."
Aurelia stepped forward.
"Your life isn't meaningless."
"Then why must mine disappear?"
Aurelia had no answer.
The world continued collapsing.
Veyne stood beside her.
"This is what the palace does."
"What?"
"It makes you choose."
Aurelia looked at the disappearing world.
She finally understood the cruelty.
There was no perfect choice.
Every world contained lives.
Every choice destroyed possibilities.
The palace wasn't testing whether she could save everyone.
It was testing whether she could accept that she couldn't.
Aurelia closed her eyes.
"I am sorry."
The world vanished.
Not violently.
Quietly.
Like a dream forgotten after waking.
Aurelia opened her eyes.
Another door stood before them.
The boy looked at it.
His expression changed.
"What?"
He pointed.
The door had only one name.
VEYNE.
Veyne stared at it.
Aurelia stepped toward him.
"No."
He looked at her.
"I need to know what's inside."
"Not alone."
The boy whispered:
"You may not have a choice."
The door opened.
Darkness waited beyond it.
Then a voice came from inside.
Veyne's voice.
But older.
Colder.
And it said:
"You should have left me dead."
