Aurelia entered first.
Veyne followed.
The boy remained outside.
The door closed behind them.
They stood in a black field beneath a moonless sky.
A figure stood in the distance.
Veyne.
But different.
He wore the same expression Aurelia had seen in the oldest memories.
The expression of someone who had stopped expecting anything from the world.
Aurelia whispered:
"Who are you?"
The other Veyne smiled.
"The one who stayed dead."
Veyne stared at him.
"You're one of the cycles."
"No."
The other Veyne looked toward Aurelia.
"I am the version of me that you never brought back."
Aurelia felt cold.
The other Veyne walked closer.
"You always believed returning me was mercy."
"I thought I was saving you."
"You were."
He smiled.
"From death."
His eyes hardened.
"But not from you."
Aurelia looked down.
"You're right."
Veyne stepped forward.
"Don't blame her for what I chose."
The other Veyne laughed.
"You still defend her."
"Yes."
"Even after everything?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
Veyne looked at Aurelia.
"Because her worst choices don't erase everything else about her."
The other Veyne stared at him.
Then he laughed again.
"You still don't understand."
He looked at Aurelia.
"She never needed to resurrect me."
Aurelia froze.
"What?"
"I was supposed to stay dead."
The world around them shifted.
Aurelia saw the original moment.
Veyne dying.
Aurelia standing beside him.
The world ending.
And then Aurelia making her choice.
She had not resurrected him because the world demanded it.
She had done it because she could not accept losing him.
That choice had created the first cycle.
The other Veyne whispered:
"You weren't trying to save me."
Aurelia looked at him.
"You were trying to save yourself from grief."
She closed her eyes.
"Yes."
The admission changed the world.
The black sky cracked.
The other Veyne began fading.
Aurelia looked at him.
"Where are you going?"
"Nowhere."
He smiled.
"That's the point."
For the first time, he looked peaceful.
"You finally understand."
He disappeared.
Veyne remained silent.
Aurelia turned toward him.
"I thought I was saving you."
"I know."
"I was afraid."
"I know."
"And I made you live again and again because I couldn't accept losing you."
Veyne nodded.
"But you don't have to do that anymore."
Aurelia looked at him.
"What if I lose you?"
He answered:
"Then you lose me."
The words hurt.
But they were honest.
"And you'll still choose me?"
Veyne smiled.
"As long as it's my choice."
The darkness disappeared.
The door opened.
The silver-eyed boy stood outside.
But he wasn't alone.
Behind him stood the oldest Aurelia.
She looked at the two of them.
"You understand now."
Aurelia nodded.
"What happens next?"
The woman looked at the boy.
"The final choice."
The boy lowered his eyes.
Aurelia noticed.
"You know what it is."
He didn't answer.
Veyne did.
"It's him."
The boy looked up.
Aurelia's expression changed.
"What?"
Veyne stared at the boy.
"The palace wasn't showing us worlds."
He pointed toward the silver-eyed child.
"It was showing us what created him."
The boy's silver eyes filled with tears.
"I didn't want you to know."
Aurelia stepped toward him.
"Know what?"
The boy whispered:
"I am the world that chose you."
