The council chamber was a whirlwind of color and noise, courtiers and advisors buzzing like bees. Kai stood tall, Ava's hand still warm in his. "Present Prince Kai, claimant to the throne," the advisor announced.
The councilors' eyes landed on Ava, curiosity and calculation mingling in their expressions. Kai squeezed her hand, his voice steady. "I claim the throne, with one condition: Ava Reyes stays by my side as my partner."
Gasps rippled through the room. An elderly councilor spoke, "A commoner? Unprecedented!"
Kai's jaw set. "She's the one I choose. I won't rule without her."
Ava's heart skipped, the room spinning. Whispers swirled, "Scandalous... charming... the people will love it..."
The lead councilor, a stern woman, spoke, "Very well, Prince. Tradition dictates a trial: prove your worth to the kingdom within a week. If successful, the throne is yours... with your commoner by your side."
Ava's eyes met Kai's, excitement and terror dancing. "Deal," Kai said, grinning.
The councilors nodded, a murmur of "The Sea Goddess approves..." echoed through the room. Ava felt a shiver – what just happened?
As they exited, Kai spun Ava into a twirl. "We're in this together!" Fireworks lit the night sky again – their signal.
Ava laughed, her heart soaring. "What's the trial?"
Kai's smile was mischievous. "Don't know, but with you... I'm ready."
