Chapter 13 - The Return No One Expected

The underground base had always been quiet.

Not empty—but controlled.

Every movement had purpose. Every voice stayed low. Screens flickered with streams of information, names, transactions, surveillance feeds. It was a place built not on strength, but on awareness.

At the center of it all stood Zhao Ren.

Acting leader.

For three years.

Three years of holding something together that was never meant to exist without its creator.

"We're losing the northern channel," one of the operators said, tension clear in his voice. "Two of our contacts went silent this morning."

Zhao Ren didn't look up immediately. His eyes stayed on the central screen, fingers lightly tapping the table.

"Pull back the remaining assets," he said calmly. "No unnecessary risks."

"Yes."

Orders were given. Movements adjusted. The system continued.

But something felt off.

It had been like that for a while now.

Since he disappeared.

"Still thinking about him?" a woman's voice came from behind.

Zhao Ren didn't turn.

"No," he replied. "I stopped doing that a long time ago."

A lie.

A quiet one.

Then—

A sound.

Soft.

Almost unnoticeable.

But in a place like this…

Nothing went unnoticed.

The door at the far end of the hall opened.

No authorization signal.

No prior notice.

Just—

Opened.

Everyone looked up.

At first, there was confusion.

Then hesitation.

Then—

Stillness.

A figure walked in.

Simple clothes.

Calm steps.

Unhurried.

Zhao Ren's eyes narrowed.

For a second—

He didn't move.

Didn't speak.

Didn't even breathe properly.

"…That's not possible," someone whispered.

Because they all recognized him.

Even if they didn't want to believe it.

Su Chen.

The man who built this place.

The man who disappeared without a trace.

The man they had quietly accepted as dead.

Su Chen walked forward like nothing had changed.

Like three years hadn't passed.

Like he had just stepped out for a moment and returned.

Zhao Ren finally moved.

One step forward.

Then another.

His expression wasn't shock anymore.

It was something deeper.

Something harder to define.

"…You're alive."

Su Chen stopped a few steps away from him.

"Clearly."

Silence spread across the room.

No one spoke.

Because no one knew what to say.

Zhao Ren let out a slow breath.

A small, disbelieving laugh escaped him.

"…We buried you without a body."

Su Chen's gaze didn't change.

"You shouldn't bury things you haven't confirmed."

That sounded like him.

Too much like him.

The tension in the room shifted.

From disbelief—

To certainty.

"You really came back…" the woman from earlier said quietly.

Su Chen looked around.

At the screens.

At the people.

At the system that had kept running even after he left.

"You kept it alive."

Zhao Ren shook his head slightly.

"Barely."

A pause.

"Without you… it stopped growing."

Su Chen nodded once.

Then walked past him.

Straight to the center.

No one stopped him.

No one questioned it.

Because even after everything—

This place still recognized him.

He placed his hand on the central console.

The system flickered.

Paused.

Then—

Adjusted.

Access restored.

Full control.

A quiet wave passed through the room.

Not visible.

But felt.

Zhao Ren watched him closely.

"…You changed."

Su Chen didn't deny it.

"Yes."

A simple answer.

But it carried weight.

He turned to face them.

"All of you—listen."

The room stilled instantly.

No distractions.

No movement.

"This organization was never meant to stay small."

A pause.

"It was built to grow."

Zhao Ren crossed his arms slightly.

"…Into what?"

Su Chen's eyes moved across the room.

Calm.

Sharp.

Certain.

"Everything."

The word landed heavier than expected.

"Information isn't enough anymore," he continued. "We expand into resources. Finance. Logistics. Influence."

A slight pause.

"Every sector that matters."

Someone in the back hesitated.

"That would attract attention…"

Su Chen looked at him.

Just once.

"Then we become something they can't touch."

Silence.

Zhao Ren exhaled slowly.

A faint smile appeared.

"…That sounds more like you."

For the first time—

The tension broke slightly.

Su Chen turned back to the console.

"Pull up current operations."

Screens shifted.

Data reorganized.

Everything laid out clearly.

His eyes moved quickly.

Processing.

Adjusting.

Deciding.

Then—

He stopped.

"Add a new priority."

Zhao Ren frowned slightly.

"What is it?"

Su Chen's voice remained calm.

"Investigate someone."

"Who?"

A brief pause.

"Lin Yanyan."

The name spread through the room.

Quickly.

Zhao Ren raised an eyebrow.

"That CEO?"

"Yes."

One of the operators immediately began searching.

"Pulling data now…"

Information flooded the screen.

Company records.

Public history.

Business dealings.

Everything that could be found.

"…She's clean," the operator said after a moment. "No connection to cultivation families. No suspicious records."

Su Chen didn't react.

"Keep digging."

They did.

Deeper.

Hidden layers.

Private networks.

Restricted files.

Minutes passed.

Then—

"…Wait."

Everyone turned.

The operator stared at the screen.

Confused.

"…There's something else."

"Show it."

The file opened.

Simple.

Direct.

Undeniable.

Marriage registration.

Name: Su Chen

Name: Lin Yanyan

Silence.

Complete.

Zhao Ren blinked once.

Then again.

"…Your… wife?"

The room erupted—

Not loudly.

But in shock.

Whispers.

Confusion.

Disbelief.

"You got married?!"

"When?!"

"How did we not know this?!"

Su Chen remained calm.

"As of recently."

Zhao Ren stared at him.

"…You disappeared for years…"

A pause.

Then—

"And came back married?"

Su Chen didn't answer that part.

Instead, he said:

"Everything about her—dig deeper."

The operator nodded quickly.

"Yes."

But the atmosphere had already changed.

They weren't just looking at their leader anymore.

They were looking at someone who had returned…

Stronger.

Different.

And somehow—

More complicated than before.

Zhao Ren let out a quiet breath.

A faint smile tugged at his lips.

"…You really didn't come back the same."

Su Chen glanced at him.

"No."

A pause.

"I came back better."

And this time—

No one doubted it.
