Chapter 14 - A Name That Doesn’t Sit Quietly

The base didn't return to normal.

It tried to.

Screens resumed their steady flow. Voices dropped back to controlled levels. Fingers moved across keyboards like nothing had happened.

But it wasn't the same.

Because he was here.

Su Chen stood in front of the central console, his gaze resting on the data flowing across the screen. Numbers, names, networks—it all moved in patterns he could read without effort.

But behind him—

The atmosphere was different.

Tighter.

Sharper.

Alive.

"…Run it again."

His voice wasn't loud.

But it carried.

"Yes."

The operator straightened immediately, pulling up Lin Yanyan's file again. Every piece of public data had already been laid out—company structure, acquisitions, partnerships.

Perfect.

Too perfect.

Zhao Ren leaned against the edge of the table, arms crossed, watching the screen.

"She's clean," he said. "Cleaner than most politicians."

A pause.

"Which makes it worse."

Su Chen didn't respond immediately.

His eyes moved slightly.

Tracking something deeper.

"People like that don't exist without a reason."

That was all he said.

But it was enough.

"Dig into indirect connections," Zhao Ren ordered. "Anything that doesn't show up at first glance."

"Already on it."

The room shifted again.

Focused.

Sharp.

Like a blade being drawn slowly.

Minutes passed.

Then—

"…Found something."

Everyone looked up.

"It's not direct," the operator said, frowning slightly. "More like… patterns."

He pulled up another set of data.

"Companies she acquired."

"People she promoted."

"Executives she replaced."

Zhao Ren stepped closer.

"…What about them?"

The operator zoomed in.

"These people—before joining her—they had no major records."

A pause.

"After joining her, they became extremely efficient."

Another pause.

"Too efficient."

Silence.

Zhao Ren's expression darkened slightly.

"…Controlled?"

"No," the operator replied slowly. "Not controlled."

A hesitation.

"Aligned."

That word lingered.

Su Chen finally spoke.

"Show me their timelines."

Data shifted.

Years condensed into patterns.

Movements.

Decisions.

Outcomes.

And then—

It became clear.

Everything around Lin Yanyan moved…

Like it was part of her.

Not forced.

Not manipulated.

But naturally drawn in.

Zhao Ren let out a quiet breath.

"…That's not normal."

"No," Su Chen said.

"It isn't."

The room fell silent again.

But this time—

It wasn't confusion.

It was understanding.

Whoever Lin Yanyan was—

She wasn't just a CEO.

"…And she married you," Zhao Ren muttered, half to himself.

A few people exchanged glances.

Careful ones.

Curious ones.

But no one spoke out loud.

Because they all felt it—

There was something dangerous about that fact.

Su Chen didn't react to their thoughts.

But he knew.

His fingers tapped lightly against the console.

Once.

Twice.

"She came to fulfill an engagement," he said calmly.

Zhao Ren raised an eyebrow.

"And you believed that?"

Su Chen's gaze shifted slightly.

Not defensive.

Not dismissive.

"Does it matter?"

Zhao Ren held his stare for a moment.

Then—

A faint smile appeared.

"…No."

Because in the end—

Intent didn't change outcome.

"She's not normal," Zhao Ren said. "And she's close to you."

A pause.

"That's either a problem…"

"Or an advantage," Su Chen finished.

Silence.

Because they all knew—

With someone like him—

It would never stay simple.

The operator hesitated slightly before speaking again.

"…There's one more thing."

"Say it."

"She's been targeted."

The room froze.

"By who?" Zhao Ren asked immediately.

"…Unknown."

A pause.

"But whoever it is… they're not small."

Another silence.

Heavier this time.

Zhao Ren glanced at Su Chen.

"…You knew?"

Su Chen didn't answer right away.

Then—

"Yes."

Not everything.

But enough.

The memory of that moment flickered briefly.

The attack.

The way she moved.

The way she smiled after.

Not fear.

Not shock.

Excitement.

"…She handled it," he added.

Zhao Ren exhaled slowly.

"…Of course she did."

A quiet tension spread through the room again.

But it wasn't panic.

It was something else.

Interest.

Because now—

This wasn't just about their leader.

It was about someone who could stand beside him.

Su Chen turned away from the screen.

"Assign a team."

Zhao Ren frowned slightly.

"To protect her?"

"No."

A pause.

"To observe."

That answer landed differently.

"You don't want interference?" Zhao Ren asked.

"If she needs protection," Su Chen said calmly, "then she's not worth observing."

Silence.

Then—

Zhao Ren nodded.

"…Understood."

Orders were given.

Quietly.

Efficiently.

But the atmosphere didn't settle.

Because something had changed.

Not just in the organization.

But in the direction they were heading.

Zhao Ren looked at Su Chen again.

Really looked this time.

"You disappeared," he said quietly.

"Came back stronger."

A pause.

"And now there's someone else just as strange as you."

Su Chen didn't deny it.

"Things are moving," Zhao Ren continued.

"…Faster than before."

Su Chen's gaze lifted slightly.

"Then keep up."

No hesitation.

No doubt.

Just certainty.

Zhao Ren let out a small breath.

Then—

A smile.

Real this time.

"…Yeah."

Around them—

The base came alive again.

Not the same controlled silence as before.

Something sharper.

More focused.

More dangerous.

Because now—

They weren't just maintaining what was left.

They were building something new.

And at the center of it—

Was a man who had returned from death…

And a woman no one could fully understand.

And for the first time in years—

Zhao Ren felt it again.

That feeling he thought he had lost.

Anticipation.
