Chapter 18 - Chapter 18: The Shattered Mirror

The air around Outpost Alpha didn't just turn cold that night; it turned wrong.

The horses of the Iron Tusk, usually brave enough to face a blizzard, began to scream in their pens. They kicked at the reinforced timber, their eyes rolling back in terror. On the battlements, the Syndicate guards gripped their repeating crossbows, but for the first time, the weapons felt like toys in their hands.

"Master," General Yan whispered, his face ashen. He was a man who had seen a thousand deaths, but he was currently shaking. "Something is coming. It doesn't have a heartbeat."

Su Chen stood on the balcony of the central hall. He didn't need the General's warning. His System interface was screaming in a violent, flickering purple.

[WARNING: High-Energy Biological Signature Detected.] [Target: Rank 1 Cultivator - 'Foundation Establishment' Stage.] [Probability of Survival with Current Tech: 12%.]

"A Cultivator," Su Chen muttered. In the lore of the Great Yan, they were myths—monks and warriors who had supposedly transcended humanity to harness the Qi of the earth. In a world of ledgers and silver, they were a glitch in the matrix.

From the darkness of the tundra, a single man approached. He wore no furs, only a thin, white silk robe that billowed in the wind as if the cold didn't exist. He didn't walk; he glided across the snow, leaving no footprints. In his hand was a slender, straight sword that hummed with a faint, crystalline light.

"Su Chen of the Syndicate," the man said. His voice wasn't loud, yet it echoed inside everyone's skull like a bell. "The Emperor has seen your 'Thunder'. He finds your toys... disrespectful to the Heavens. I am here to return this land to the silence it deserves."

The Breach

"Fire!" General Yan roared.

The watchtowers erupted. Fifty Syndicate guards unleashed a volley of repeating crossbow bolts and hand-cannon fire. A wall of lead and steel hissed through the air, enough to turn a squad of heavy cavalry into a red mist.

The Cultivator didn't even raise his sword. He simply waved a hand.

A shimmering translucent dome—an Aura Shield—rippled into existence around him. The bolts didn't just stop; they hit the dome and vaporized into sparks. The hand-cannon lead balls flattened against the air as if they had hit a mountain.

"Magic," Han Jing whimpered, falling to his knees. "It's a god. We can't fight a god!"

The Cultivator gestured with his sword. A beam of white light shot from the tip, striking the main gate of the Outpost. The three-ton timber door, reinforced with Syndicate iron, didn't just break—it shattered into splinters as if it were made of glass.

The Boss's Calculation

Su Chen didn't panic. He was a short-seller. He looked for the weakness in the "unbreakable" asset.

"System," Su Chen thought, his mind racing. "Analyze the shield. What is the power source?"

[Analysis: Shield is a high-frequency vibration of localized Qi. It is highly effective against low-velocity physical projectiles. Efficiency: 99%.] [Weakness: Kinetic Saturation. The shield consumes the user's internal energy (Qi) to neutralize force. Excessive, continuous force will cause 'Internal Burnout'.]

"He can stop a bolt," Su Chen realized. "But can he stop a constant stream of supersonic lead?"

He looked at his 14,000 SP. It was time to break the bank.

"General Yan! To the lower balcony! Grab the iron stand!" Su Chen shouted.

As the Cultivator stepped into the courtyard, casually decapitating a guard with a flick of his fingers, Su Chen and Yan hauled a massive, gleaming machine onto the railing. It looked like a cluster of iron pipes attached to a heavy brass crank.

The Death of a Myth

The Cultivator looked up, a faint, condescending smile on his face. "Another toy, Merchant? Your persistence is—"

"Shut up," Su Chen said. He grabbed the handle. "And pay your taxes."

Crank-crank-crank-crank!

The machine didn't roar; it barked with a rhythmic, mechanical fury that drowned out the wind. A six-inch flame spat from the barrels.

The Cultivator raised his hand, his shield shimmering into place. For the first second, it held. But then, the sheer volume of lead began to tell. Two hundred heavy slugs per minute, each carrying the kinetic energy of a falling horse, slammed into the same six-inch patch of air.

The shield began to flicker. It turned from white to a strained, angry red.

The Cultivator's smile vanished. He tried to move, to dodge, but the stream of lead followed him with a mechanical, cold precision. He poured more Qi into the shield, his face turning pale, blood beginning to leak from his nose.

"More!" Su Chen roared, cranking the handle until the brass turned hot.

POP.

The sound was like a soap bubble bursting. The Cultivator's shield disintegrated.

In the next heartbeat, the man who "transcended humanity" was erased. The heavy .50 caliber slugs tore through the white silk, through the "divine" flesh, and through the stone wall behind him. There was no graceful death. There was only the brutal reality of industrial-tier physics.

The Autopsy of a God

The courtyard fell into a deathly silence, save for the ticking of the cooling barrels. The Cultivator lay in a heap of red rags and shattered bone.

Su Chen stepped down into the yard, his boots crunching on the snow. He stood over the corpse, looking at the broken sword.

"He... he's dead," Han Jing whispered, crawling forward. "You killed a Cultivator."

"I killed a biological organism that was over-leveraged on a single defensive strategy," Su Chen corrected. He knelt down and touched the glowing shards of the broken sword.

"Yan," Su Chen said, his eyes glowing with a dark, predatory light. "Take the body to the basement. I want to know how his blood works. I want to know where his 'Qi' is stored."

"Master?" Yan asked, his voice trembling. "What are you going to do?"

Su Chen looked at the broken sword, then at the System Shop, where a new Tier 3 tab had just appeared: [Magitech & Arcane Engineering].

"The Emperor wants to be a god?" Su Chen said, standing up. "Fine. I'll let him. But I'm going to build a Syndicate that can foreclose on Heaven itself."
