Chapter 8 - The Crack beneath the Surface

The crack never split open loud enough to be heard.

---

It whispered.

It hesitated.

It paused in moments of delayed judgment.

---

Adeiza watched everything unfold.

---

The feeder structure used to move efficiently and flawlessly.

But now it exhibited signs of internal cracks.

Nodes delayed responses.

Requests for confirmation became more frequent.

Data validation procedures multiplied.

---

"… You're beginning to distrust each other," Adeiza murmured.

---

Just as planned.

---

The isolated node continued with its strange behavior.

---

It was no longer following orders obediently.

It analyzed them.

It validated the information.

It questioned everything.

---

And most importantly—

It documented discrepancies.

---

"… You're tracking it now."

---

That meant only one thing.

---

"This one cannot be discarded."

---

Adeiza bent forward slightly.

---

In the hierarchy of this feeder network—

There were specific functions assigned to nodes, despite being somewhat ambiguous.

Most served as executors.

Some as coordinators.

---

But this one—

---

"… An analyst." That was all it takes.

---

An analyst was someone who ensured accuracy of the system by performing validation.

Which meant—

If this node ever fully refused the falsified data—

It would be able to expose everything.

Or—

Trigger a catastrophic system breakdown.

---

Adeiza hesitated slightly.

---

And then—

Made his decision.

---

> [Operation: Controlled Pressure]

---

Adeiza didn't continue sending contradictory data anymore.

He minimized it.

The isolated node started receiving lesser amounts of information.

Gaps started to appear.

Incomplete datasets.

Disconnected streams.

Interrupted log records.

---

As far as the rest of the network was concerned—

None of this was happening.

---

But for that node—

---

"… You're blind."

---

Minutes passed.

---

The node started requesting additional data.

The request is denied.

It tries to reroute and fails.

Internal communications start, and they are ignored.

Delays follow.

---

"… Now you feel it." Pressure.

Not applied from outside.

But internally.

From inside the very system that runs on it.

The worst possible pressure.

---

The node started to react accordingly.

> "Data inconsistency increasing. Request verification."

---

Adeiza received a quick reply.

> "Maintain current operations. Do not deviate."

---

Strict.

Dismissive.

Definitive.

---

Adeiza's mouth twisted into a faint smile.

"They're suppressing you now." That was enough.

Doubt wasn't just internal anymore.

It now had direction.

The node stopped responding for a few seconds.

And then—

Broke free from commands and operated independently.

"… Good."

It starts pulling data directly.

Cross-referencing data.

Matching outputs.

Analyzing information.

And in doing so—

Approaches the very point of Adeiza's manipulation.

---

Dangerously close.

---

Adeiza's eyes sharpened.

"Careful."

If it digs too deep—

It might discover the illusion.

And if that happens—

Everything will shift.

Not necessarily fail.

Just accelerate.

Too early.

---

His hands began moving across the keyboard.

> [Adaptive Masking Engaged]

---

The false data is reshaped once again.

Not deleted.

Refined.

And now—

Regardless of how deep into it the node looks—

It remains consistent enough to—

Confuse it.

Mislead it.

Cause indecision.

And delays.

"… You're going to doubt your own conclusions."

The node slowed down.

Its analysis loops repeated.

Again.

And again.

Indecision.

Discomfort.

Perfection.

---

While—

Adeiza switched windows.

He checked Adebayo Holdings' relay.

It continued feeding information to its subordinates.

But now—

It began to show some results.

Internal systems adapted.

Security teams redirected attention.

Resources started shifting.

Minimal changes but visible ones.

---

"… Even we can feel the impact of the lie."

He watched carefully.

Manipulation affected everyone involved.

Too much interference—

Could trigger destabilization even on his side.

"… Balance."

Adeiza made minor adjustments.

Subtle changes to internal signals.

Enough to stabilize the system.

But not to interfere.

The company was safe.

Unaware.

Protected.

---

A notification appeared.

> [System Alert]

[Subordinate Node Activity Spike: GhostKey]

---

Instant reaction—

Adeiza switched back to his control panel.

GhostKey's system activity skyrocketed.

Simultaneous running of multiple scripts.

Active data streams.

"… What is happening?"

---

A message from GhostKey popped up.

> GhostKey: I discovered something.

---

Adeiza scrutinized the incoming data.

"What do you mean?" His fingers stopped mid-click.

> Apex Null: Define 'something.'

---

A moment passed.

---

"And?"

---

> GhostKey: There's another level of data beyond the one you gave me. I wasn't supposed to see that layer.

---

Adeiza's fingers stiffened for a second.

"Another layer?"

That was not part of the feeder network that he mapped.

---

Which means—

"There's something higher than them."

GhostKey sent a fragment of data.

Encrypted.

Distorted.

But real.

And Adeiza recognized it immediately.

---

"… So that's how they connect," he mused.

This was bigger than the mere feeder structure.

Not the Covenant—

But somehow connected to it.

Structured.

But hidden at a higher level.

Inactive.

Observing.

"… Interesting."

GhostKey sent him another message.

> GhostKey: I think they detected my presence.

---

Adeiza acted instantly.

> Apex Null: Disconnect immediately.

---

Immediate reply—

> GhostKey: Trying…

---

> [GhostKey Node: Signal Disruption Detected]

---

Adeiza didn't change his face.

But the way his eyes looked—

It signaled the danger coming.

"… Too slow."

Adeiza's fingers flew.

> [Emergency Override: Phase Shift]

---

This wasn't controlled anymore.

This wasn't subtle.

This—

Was sheer force.

Adeiza cut connections, collapsed pathways.

Poured random information in GhostKey's node.

Masked everything.

And then—

Ripped him out.

Violently.

> [GhostKey: Disconnected]

---

Complete silence.

Absolute calmness.

---

Adeiza leaned back.

"… They reacted."

Faster than he expected.

Which means—

"They pay too much attention."

His computer chimed seconds after.

> GhostKey: … I'm out…

---

Response—

> Apex Null: Status report.

---

Brief pause.

> GhostKey: They tried to lock me in. That wasn't like before…

---

No.

It wasn't.

Adeiza's eyes darkened a little.

"… We have been recognized."

Not yet exposed completely—

But recognized.

And that—

---

Changes everything.

---

Adeiza went back to the feeder network he established.

The fracture was still present.

And continued growing.

But now—

---

There was something else.

A presence.

Faint but persistent.

Watching.

From deeper inside.

---

"… So you're noticing me now," Adeiza murmured.

Not out of amusement.

Out of recognition.

---

His fingers hovered over the keyboard.

Waiting.

Calculating.

Because this—

---

Was not just manipulation anymore.

---

It was something else.

---

Dangerous.

---

Adeiza spoke quietly.

"… Good."

The game just got more interesting.

And this time—

---

He was ready.
