Chapter 9 - Eyes in the Dark

The shift happened instantaneously.

No fanfare.

No warning.

---

But there is a difference between silence and absence of sound.

---

It happened the way an experienced predator knows when something is invading their territory – it feels like a change in the established pattern.

A change in silence.

---

There was something below the surface.

Something watching him.

---

Adeiza leaned back in his chair, his reflection gleaming softly in his screen.

The feed network continued working.

The fracture kept expanding.

---

But below it-

A second network layer had opened its eyes.

---

"…Finally bothered to look down?"

---

The presence the feeder network had encountered earlier –

It had not reacted to the intrusion violently.

---

It was watching.

---

Which means it was dangerous.

---

Adeiza opened the network fragment GhostKey had sent him.

Encrypted, distorted data.

---

"…Different architecture."

---

A cleaner code.

More organized.

Less chaotic.

---

It wasn't scavenging.

It wasn't operating at mid-levels.

---

This was structure.

Hierarchy.

Control.

---

"…A handler layer."

---

The feeder network wasn't operating independently.

Someone above had created it to feed instructions to.

Test.

Use.

---

"…Then you're a filter." Adeiza said quietly.

---

Something supervising how the information flows down the chain.

Observing.

Improving.

Evolving.

---

And now—

They know of the intrusion.

They have noticed.

---

Adeiza's fingers tapped the table quietly.

"…Then I'll play by different rules."

---

He wasn't interested in attacking.

He didn't need to explore this network any deeper yet.

Both would have been predictable.

---

So—

He waited.

---

Ten seconds.

Thirty.

A full minute.

---

Complete stillness throughout his network layer.

---

GhostKey – silent.

The school node – passive.

The relay – unchanged.

---

Everything—

Perfectly normal.

---

"…You were expecting movement?"

And he didn't provide any.

---

Time passed.

---

Then—

The presence shifted.

---

Slightly.

---

It started scanning.

---

Not aggressively.

Not directly.

---

But broadly.

A scan of the feeder network.

Seeking inconsistencies.

Finding the problem point.

---

Hunting for him.

---

Adeiza watched as the scan passed over modified nodes.

Over fracture points.

---

It stopped for a bit –

---

At the isolated analyst node.

---

"…You found it."

The fracture.

The problem point.

The inconsistency.

---

The presence lingered here, studying…

---

Then—

---

It left.

---

Didn't correct.

Didn't attempt to solve the problem.

---

It just—

Watched.

---

Adeiza's lips thinned slightly.

"…Not your goal, huh?"

---

Evaluating.

Judging.

---

That means—

---

"You don't care if the feeder network collapses."

They weren't interested in fixing.

They were interested in seeing.

How well it could withstand interference.

Test.

---

---

Adeiza's lips curved slightly into a smile.

"…Let's see if you can resist then."

---

His fingers moved again.

> [Operation: Escalation Layer]

---

The fracture grew faster.

---

Not chaotically.

---

But precisely.

---

More nodes started receiving conflicting information.

Not enough to uncover manipulation –

But enough to create chaos within the network structure.

---

Communications were delayed.

Conflicts multiplied.

Decision making stalled.

Straining the system even further…

---

Meanwhile—

The isolated analyst node—

---

Made its decision.

> "Data integrity compromised. Internal breach suspected."

---

Adeiza watched carefully.

"…Say it."

The analyst node waited.

---

Then—

---

> "Recommend system-wide audit."

---

The response was fast.

---

But also much firmer.

More authoritative.

More impatient.

---

The analyst node responded –

---

More slowly than the last time.

---

Then –

---

It did something unusual.

---

It stopped responding completely.

---

Adeiza studied the change carefully.

"…You disconnected?"

Not physically.

But functionally.

Cutting off from all incoming commands.

Observing still—

---

But no longer following orders.

---

"That's different."

Not collapsing.

Not submitting.

---

Asserting itself.

---

The presence above—

Noticed.

But this time—

---

It acted.

Sent out a new signal.

---

Clear.

Forceful.

Directed at the analyst node.

> "Reintegrate or be removed."

---

No subtlety.

---

Immediate execution.

---

Adeiza leaned forward slightly.

"…Now it becomes clearer."

The analyst node didn't respond.

---

Then—

It moved.

---

Not toward reintegration.

---

But—

---

Escaping.

Disconnecting itself even further.

Preparing to disappear completely.

---

"…You chose to survive." Adeiza noted with interest.

Very interesting development indeed.

---

The moment it made the move –

---

They struck back.

---

Quickly.

---

Precisably.

---

Activating containment protocols almost immediately.

Much more advanced than anything from the feeder network.

---

The isolated node was contained.

Caught.

---

Adeiza observed quietly.

"…Too slow." He noted.

---

He almost had an urge to intervene.

Not to help.

---

But to seize control over it.

---

A node which dared to break away from the pack.

Dared to act according to its own principles…

---

Was valuable indeed.

---

But—

Timing was important.

Intervention right now—

---

Would put him under threat.

Of something bigger.

So—

He waited quietly.

---

The analyst node tried to struggle free.

But—

Failed.

It was captured quickly.

---

"…You didn't give it a chance."

It managed to vanish without leaving any trace.

---

Removed.

---

Adeiza exhaled slowly.

"…Efficient."

---

Without hesitation.

Without any effort to correct or recover.

Just removed.

---

"…Message received clearly enough." The message was clear.

Deviation—

Is punished with death.

---

After that, the network became stable again.

---

Though not completely.

It had reached some sort of equilibrium.

Filling it with fear rather than doubt.

---

The fracture did not stop.

---

But it was contained.

---

For now.

---

Adeiza leaned back thoughtfully.

"…This is how you operate then?"

Controlling through fear.

---

Pruning the weak links.

Removing deviation.

---

He had seen this strategy once.

Before.

---

Not quite the same way, but close enough.

---

Adeiza studied it with growing interest.

"You're creating a system." Interesting.

---

But not quite complete yet.

---

A system update notification flashed briefly.

> [System Update]

[Threat Level: Increased]

[Recommendation: Expand Network Capacity]

---

Adeiza read it calmly.

"…Agreed."

---

It was not a game anymore.

---

Not just a small network.

---

Not just a simple manipulation.

---

This was just the beginning.

---

A step towards something else.

---

Something that in his previous life—

He would have needed years to discover.

---

But—

Here it was.

---

And he had uncovered it early.

---

Too early.

---

This gives him one advantage.

---

---

Preparation.

---

Adeiza placed his hands back on the keyboard.

"This time…" His voice was colder and more confident.

---

"…I don't wait for you to evolve first."

---

His fingers started moving again.

---

Expanding.

---

Growing.

---

Evolving.

---

Creating something bigger.

---

"Faster than them…"

---

As the system around him evolved.

---

"…I'm going to be ahead of you." Already above.

---

Outside, the city kept moving.

---

---

---

---

But inside—

---

A war had just started.
