Chapter 2 - The Four-Leaf Grimoire (1)

The Grimoire Acceptance Ceremony is an extremely important ceremony for people in the world of Black Clover. Once a year, adolescents who have reached the age of 15 seek out the nearest Grimoire Towers to receive a Grimoire for themselves.

The wand chooses the wizard.

Brian didn't remember exactly who said that sentence, but that saying was also nearly correct regarding the way mages receive their Grimoires in this world.

A Grimoire chooses its owner; there is no such thing as the other way around. Therefore, whether one receives a thin or thick book, as small as a chili pepper or as large as a pagoda pillar, the person chosen by that Grimoire will have no way to change or choose another one.

"Oi, Yuno, do we really need to follow the others to receive books like this?"

Brian spoke up to ask Yuno. He and Yuno were currently on their way to the nearest Grimoire Tower to receive a Grimoire for themselves.

Because of this Grimoire Acceptance Ceremony, the two of them had woken up early to get here as quickly as possible. Both were very excited to receive their Grimoires.

"What do you mean?"

Yuno asked back in confusion, not paying attention to the people around who were walking ahead of him.

"We could sneak into the Grimoire Tower at night, and then receive our Grimoires then."

Brian replied, glancing at the people around them, "The Grimoire Tower isn't exactly a heavily guarded place; we can go there at night. You know, I think we'll get a surprise by doing that."

These words from Brian were not unworthy of consideration; both he and Yuno were possessors of massive magic power, and their natural talent for magic was extremely evident.

Maybe, just maybe... the two of them would be chosen by the legendary four-leaf clover Grimoire that the First Wizard King once possessed.

Hearing Brian say that, Yuno understood somewhat what the other was thinking in his head. He had lived with Brian under one roof (along with others at the orphanage) for 15 years; the two of them were soulmates, so there was no way he wouldn't know what the other's intention was.

"Do you think we could be chosen by that legendary type of Grimoire?"

Yuno nodded, asking Brian while looking far off toward the Grimoire Tower in the distance.

"It's very possible..."

Brian lowered his voice, but Yuno could still hear that he was looking forward to it immensely, "Even if we don't get that Grimoire, we don't lose anything, right?"

In the original work, when Yuno received his four-leaf clover Grimoire, he had to face enormous envy from those around him, especially the children of local noble families.

Although among those who witnessed the scene of Yuno receiving the four-leaf clover Grimoire there were many who admired him, they were only a minority.

As for whether being envied by this narrow-minded crowd was serious or not, Brian could answer that it was.

Being targeted by these people with undisguised malice was an unnecessary nuisance; there were even crazier individuals who might target him, which could cost Yuno his life.

But this wasn't even the most serious matter after Yuno received his Grimoire; he was not only targeted by envious nobles, but he was also attacked by a mage named Revchi because he wanted to steal his four-leaf clover Grimoire.

Brian had been reincarnated into this world; things he couldn't intervene in or change, he would ignore, but if he could change something, he would definitely change it to make everything better.

However much he could help Yuno and himself avoid trouble, Brian would act accordingly.

"If you've said so..."

Yuno did not object to Brian's plan to receive the Grimoires at night; he also thought it was a good idea.

The two quietly separated from the flow of people rushing toward the Grimoire Tower. While others were buzzing with talk about what kind of Grimoire they would receive, Brian and Yuno went to a small nearby river to kill time while waiting for the others to finish receiving their Grimoires.

"What kind of Grimoire do you think we will receive next year?"

Brian asked while taking off his shoes; he placed his feet into the gently flowing water and felt the slight cold transmitting through the skin beneath his feet.

"I don't know..."

Yuno also imitated Brian by putting his feet into the water, replying in a flat voice, "I hope it will be a somewhat thick Grimoire."

"Yeah, I hope so."

Brian replied while his eyes scanned the surroundings; he pretended he was enjoying the cool air and the scenery, but in reality, he was carefully observing everything to see if anyone was hiding or following him and Yuno.

"Last year we saw someone get a Grimoire with only a few thin pages of paper."

Yuno continued, "If we can't get a thick one, I hope it won't be too thin."

When Brian suddenly mentioned receiving Grimoires next year, Yuno understood that his friend wanted to act as if the two of them were just 14-year-old teenagers excited to see the 15-year-olds receive their Grimoires, dreaming of receiving their own a year later.

Although it wasn't clear why Brian had to be this careful, Yuno didn't mind playing along with Brian's plan. He knew how hateful nobles were, so doing this was necessary for the two of them.

Whether this method was effective enough to fool that Revchi guy, Brian didn't know, but first, he would just put on an act. Although this play had many suspicious points, this much should be enough to deceive those without brains.

Because if the two of them were only 14, they would never be chosen by a Grimoire. And if they wanted to see the Grimoires of others, they should have gone inside the Grimoire Tower to witness with their own eyes the scene of the Grimoires choosing their owners, rather than sitting leisurely playing with water here.

If it weren't to avoid being chosen by a Grimoire, no one who was 15 would be sitting here.

Hopefully, that Revchi guy wouldn't be smart enough to recognize their abnormality.

Brian and Yuno thus patiently sat by the riverbank waiting; after some time, cheers of joy from the crowd at the Grimoire Tower finally rang out, signaling that the Grimoire Acceptance Ceremony had ended and the participants had received their Grimoires.

The two immediately stood up, put their shoes back on, and ran quickly toward the Grimoire Tower to watch the flow of people leaving that place. At this time, the two of them did not use magic, the purpose being to avoid being discovered by anyone for having strong magic control abilities.

From atop a high mound of earth, the two stood observing each person while these people were not paying attention to them.

"Many people are satisfied this year."

Brian remarked seeing the happy expressions on the faces of some people in the crowd, "Last year, some people seemed to even cry."

"Agreed."

Yuno replied nonchalantly, his eyes also looking down at the moving crowd, "No one is crying this year, how boring."

"Hey, you're a bit of a jerk."

"You are too, no different from me."

No one paid attention to Brian and Yuno, because it wasn't just the two of them observing the others; besides them, there were also other curious people looking at the teenagers who had just received their Grimoires.

In a corner where no one was concerned enough to notice except Brian and Yuno, a strange mage dressed in full coverage was also standing watching the crowd walk away. He didn't stand there for long, likely because he felt there was nothing worth wasting his precious time on anymore; he left immediately afterward.

When they saw that mage leave, Brian and Yuno looked at each other, clear joy appearing in both their eyes. For they knew that their plan was halfway successful.
