The classroom felt normal again on the surface.
But nothing inside it really was.
Owen sat between two worlds without noticing the weight of it.
Lillian was beside the window, focused, calm, flipping through her notes like nothing outside her pages mattered. Owen leaned slightly toward her desk, listening as she explained a chemistry step, nodding like he actually needed every word.
Bella walked in and slowed for half a second at the door.
Just half.
Enough to see it.
Owen and Lillian again.
She smiled anyway and walked to her seat.
"Good morning," she said lightly.
Owen turned. "Morning."
Lillian looked up briefly. "Hi."
Then went back to writing.
Bella sat down, placing her bag carefully, too carefully. Her eyes didn't leave Owen for long.
"What are you doing?" she asked him.
"Trying to understand this," Owen said, pointing at Lillian's notes.
Bella nodded slowly. "Oh."
Lillian's pen moved steadily across the page. Owen leaned closer to see better.
Bella noticed that.
She leaned back in her chair.
Quiet.
Watching.
Owen laughed softly at something Lillian said. Not loud. Not exaggerated. Just real.
Bella didn't ask what was funny.
She already knew she wasn't part of it.
Later, Owen walked with Bella through the corridor.
She talked more than usual.
He answered less than usual.
"So you and Lillian study a lot now," Bella said casually.
"Yeah," Owen replied.
Bella smiled. "She's very serious."
"She is," he said.
Silence followed.
Bella filled it again. "You don't joke with her like you joke with me."
Owen shrugged slightly. "Different situation."
Bella nodded.
But her smile faded for a second.
At the window, Lillian sat alone.
Writing.
Not thinking about them.
Not noticing the shift.
To her, everything still had a simple meaning.
Owen needed help.
Bella talked a lot.
Nothing more.
Owen came back later and sat beside Lillian again.
"You okay?" she asked.
"Yes," he said quickly.
She nodded and continued explaining.
Owen listened properly again.
Focused again.
Bella watched from a distance.
Zainab noticed her.
"You're always looking at them," Zainab said.
"I'm not," Bella replied immediately.
Zainab didn't argue.
Bella looked away.
Then added softly, "I just notice things."
A pause.
"He changes," she said. "Depending on who he's with."
Zainab stayed quiet.
Bella forced a small laugh.
"I think I understand now."
But she didn't sound like she liked what she understood.
Owen sat at night with two chats open.
Bella's message.
Lillian's earlier note.
He replied to Bella quickly.
Then closed his phone.
And turned back to Lillian's notes on his table.
Not thinking deeply.
Not planning anything.
Just continuing.
While everything around him quietly shifted into something he hadn't named yet.
