Chapter 18 - LILLIAN'S CONFUSION

The classroom had returned to its usual rhythm.

Books flipping. Pens scratching. Soft voices filling small spaces between desks.

But Lillian didn't feel any of it changing.

To her, everything still felt normal.

Owen still asked questions.

Bella still smiled.

People still came and went.

Nothing seemed different.

At least… not to her.

She sat near the window like always, her notebook open, pen moving steadily as she reviewed her chemistry notes. Her focus was sharp, clean, and uninterrupted.

Owen was beside her again.

Leaning slightly forward, trying to understand a diagram she had drawn.

"This part," he said slowly, pointing, "still confuses me."

Lillian tilted her head slightly. "You're overthinking it."

"I'm not," he replied quickly.

She looked at him for a second, then sighed lightly. "You are."

That made Owen smile.

Bella, seated a few desks away, watched quietly.

But Lillian didn't notice.

She never really did.

To her, Owen and Bella were just… classmates.

Maybe friends.

Nothing more complicated than that.

She flipped the page in her notebook.

"Look," she said calmly, drawing another diagram. "If you balance it properly, it becomes easy. You don't force it."

Owen leaned in slightly. "So I just adjust it?"

"Yes."

"Like this?"

He tried.

Lillian nodded. "Better."

Owen smiled faintly. "I think I'm getting it now."

Lillian gave a small, approving nod and returned to her notes.

Simple moment.

Nothing unusual.

But behind them, Bella shifted slightly in her seat.

She watched the way Owen stayed focused on Lillian without distraction.

Then the way Lillian didn't even look up to check who was watching.

It made something tighten in Bella's chest.

She adjusted her bag on the desk in front of her.

Then stood up.

"Lillian," she called softly.

Lillian looked up immediately.

"Yes?"

Bella smiled. "Can I borrow your notes later?"

Lillian blinked once. "Why?"

Bella tilted her head. "Just to review."

A pause.

Then Lillian nodded. "Okay."

She went back to writing.

Bella stood there for a second longer than necessary.

Then walked away.

Owen noticed her leaving.

But Lillian didn't.

Later, during a short break, Owen stepped out of the classroom.

Lillian remained seated, reviewing quietly.

Bella stayed too.

This time, the room felt emptier.

Bella slowly walked toward Lillian's desk.

Not fast.

Not aggressive.

Just… steady.

Lillian looked up as she approached. "Yes?"

Bella smiled. "You always sit here alone during breaks."

Lillian paused. "I like it."

Bella nodded slowly, as if accepting that answer.

Then she glanced around the room.

"Do you and Owen always study like that?" she asked casually.

Lillian tilted her head slightly. "Like what?"

Bella smiled faintly. "Together."

Lillian blinked.

Then shrugged lightly. "He asks questions. I answer."

Simple.

No deeper meaning.

No emotion attached.

At least, in her mind.

Bella studied her face for a second longer.

Then nodded again.

"Oh," she said softly. "Okay."

She turned slightly as if to leave.

But paused again.

"You know," Bella added lightly, "he listens to you a lot."

Lillian looked confused. "Is that strange?"

Bella hesitated.

Then smiled again. "No. Just… noticed."

And walked away.

Lillian watched her go.

Then looked back at her notes.

Confused.

Not by Bella's words exactly.

But by the tone behind them.

It didn't feel like normal conversation.

But she couldn't figure out why.

Later that day, Owen returned and sat beside her again.

"You okay?" he asked casually.

Lillian looked up. "Yes. Why?"

Owen shrugged. "Just asking."

She nodded and returned to her notes.

Still confused.

Still unaware.

Because in her world—

nothing had changed.

But in everyone else's world…

something already had.

And she was the only one who hadn't noticed.
