Chapter 12 - CHAPTER ELEVEN: SOMEONE NEW

Amara arrived at the interview venue early.

She wore a simple professional outfit and carried a folder containing her certificates and CV.

The company occupied the second floor of a modern office building.

She checked the address again before entering.

At the reception, a young woman greeted her.

"Good morning. How may I help you?"

"Good morning. I'm here for an interview. My name is Amara."

"Please have a seat. Someone will attend to you shortly."

Amara sat down.

A few minutes later, she heard a familiar voice.

"Amara?"

She turned.

Michael stood near the entrance, dressed in a navy-blue shirt and dark trousers.

He smiled.

"You're here already."

"Yes. I didn't want to be late."

"That's good. How was your journey?"

"Fine, thank you."

Michael introduced her to the receptionist and explained that he had informed the recruitment team about her application.

He did not promise her the job.

Instead, he encouraged her to answer the interview questions honestly.

"You have the qualifications," he said. "Just be confident."

Amara smiled.

"Thank you for the encouragement."

The interview lasted about thirty minutes.

She answered questions about communication, organisation, teamwork and handling administrative responsibilities.

When it ended, she felt hopeful.

Michael was waiting outside.

"How did it go?"

"I think it went well."

"That's great."

"Thank you for telling me about the opportunity."

"You're welcome. I hope you get it."

They exchanged a few more words before Amara left.

Two days later, she received an email inviting her to proceed to the next stage.

She was excited.

She immediately called Teni.

"Guess what!"

"What happened?"

"I passed the first stage!"

Teni screamed.

"Amara! That's wonderful!"

"I have another assessment next week."

"You're going to do well."

Amara smiled.

For the first time in months, she felt that her life was moving forward.

She had spent so much time thinking about Daniel that she had almost forgotten her personal dreams.

Now she was beginning to focus on herself again.

A few days later, Michael called.

"Hello, Amara."

"Hi, Michael."

"Congratulations on moving to the next stage."

"Thank you. I didn't know you would hear about it so quickly."

He laughed.

"I work here. News travels."

They discussed the assessment.

Michael offered to share a few general tips about the company's interview process.

Amara appreciated his assistance.

Over time, their conversations became more frequent.

They discussed work, books, music and everyday experiences.

Michael was easy to talk to.

He never pressured her to reply immediately or demanded to know where she was.

He respected her opinions and listened whenever she spoke.

One afternoon, he invited her to have lunch after her assessment.

Amara hesitated.

She had not told Daniel about Michael.

Not because she was hiding anything, but because she did not consider their friendship important enough to announce.

Eventually, she accepted.

They met at a quiet restaurant.

Michael arrived before her and ordered a drink.

"How did the assessment go?" he asked.

"I think I did well."

"That's encouraging."

Amara smiled.

"You always sound positive."

"Someone has to remind you that things can work out."

She laughed.

They talked about their childhoods.

Michael explained that he had grown up in a family where education and responsibility were taken seriously.

He spoke about his younger sister and how he helped support her education.

Amara listened with interest.

"You sound like a very responsible person."

"I try my best. Nobody has everything figured out."

She nodded.

"That's true."

After lunch, Michael walked her towards the entrance.

"I enjoyed today," he said.

"Me too. Thank you for lunch."

"You're welcome."

He hesitated before speaking again.

"I hope we can do this again sometime."

Amara smiled politely.

"Perhaps."

They said goodbye.

On her way home, she received a message from Daniel.

Daniel: Good afternoon, my love. How are you doing?

She stared at the words.

He had started using affectionate names again.

Sometimes she liked it.

Other times, it made her uncomfortable.

Amara: I'm fine. How are you?

Daniel: I'm good. I miss you.

Amara: Hope everything is fine.

Daniel: Yes. Can I see you tomorrow?

Amara: I'll let you know.

That evening, Daniel called.

"Amara, you sound different."

"Different how?"

"Like you're somewhere else."

She laughed.

"I'm just tired."

"Have you been busy?"

"Yes. I had an assessment today."

"How did it go?"

"Well, I hope."

"That's good. I'm proud of you."

"Thank you."

There was a short silence.

Then Daniel asked:

"Have you been spending time with anyone?"

Amara frowned.

"What do you mean?"

"I don't know. You seem occupied these days."

"I have friends, Daniel. I also have things to do."

"I know. I'm not accusing you of anything."

"Then why ask?"

He sighed.

"I just want to know what's happening in your life."

Amara leaned against her chair.

"Then ask me normally. You don't need to turn every conversation into an investigation."

"I'm sorry."

She accepted his apology but ended the call shortly afterwards.

Daniel sat quietly.

He could sense that Amara was becoming more independent.

He should have been happy for her.

Instead, a strange feeling of insecurity began growing inside him.

The next morning, Teni visited Amara.

She noticed a message from Michael on the table.

"Who is Michael?"

Amara smiled.

"Someone I met through a job opportunity."

Teni raised an eyebrow.

"Someone?"

"He's just a friend."

"Okay."

Amara laughed.

"Why are you looking at me like that?"

"Nothing. I'm just happy you're meeting new people."

"Teni, please."

"I'm serious. You deserve to experience kindness without constantly worrying about what someone might do next."

Amara became thoughtful.

"Michael is nice."

"Then enjoy the friendship. Don't rush into anything."

"I won't."

Later that afternoon, Michael sent her a message.

Michael: I hope your day is going well. I came across a book you might enjoy. Would you like me to recommend it?

Amara smiled.

Amara: Of course. What's the title?

Their conversation continued.

Meanwhile, Daniel was preparing to visit her.

He had bought her favourite snacks and planned to spend the evening with her.

When he arrived, he noticed Amara standing near the gate, speaking on the phone.

She was smiling.

He waited.

When she ended the call, she turned towards him.

"Daniel! You're here."

He smiled.

"Yes. Who were you speaking with?"

"A friend."

"Who?"

Amara looked at him.

"Why?"

"Just asking."

She sighed.

"Michael."

Daniel's expression changed slightly.

"Michael?"

"Yes. He's a friend."

Daniel forced a smile.

"Okay."

He handed her the bag.

"I brought something for you."

"Thank you."

They entered the house.

But Daniel's mind was no longer on the snacks or the evening he had planned.

He kept thinking about the man who had made Amara smile.

For the first time since their reconciliation began, he realised that Amara was not simply waiting for him.

She was living her life.

And if he truly wanted another chance, he would have to accept that she had every right to meet people, make friends and discover new possibilities.

But Daniel was not sure he was ready for that.

The past had already wounded their relationship. Now, someone new was quietly entering the space Daniel desperately wanted to reclaim.
