Chapter 11 - CHAPTER TEN: THE PRICE OF FORGIVENESS

Amara thought that forgiving Daniel would make everything easier.

She was wrong.

The days following their kiss were filled with mixed emotions.

Sometimes she woke up smiling because she remembered their evening together.

Other times, she felt angry with herself for allowing Daniel to get close again.

She wanted to believe that he was different.

But whenever his phone rang unexpectedly, she remembered the betrayal.

Whenever he took too long to reply, her mind began creating questions.

She hated feeling that way.

One afternoon, Daniel called.

"Hello, beautiful."

Amara smiled slightly.

"Hello."

"How is your day going?"

"Fine. Yours?"

"Busy, but manageable."

They talked for a few minutes before Daniel asked whether she would like to have dinner with him.

Amara agreed.

That evening, Daniel arrived at her house with a small gift bag.

"What is this?" she asked.

"Something I saw and thought you might like."

She opened it.

Inside was a beautiful wristwatch.

"Daniel, you didn't have to."

"I know. I just wanted to."

She examined it.

"It's lovely. Thank you."

He smiled.

"You're welcome."

They went to a nearby restaurant.

During dinner, Daniel spoke about his plans for the coming months.

He wanted to improve his finances, develop his business and become more responsible.

Amara listened.

Then she asked a question that had been troubling her.

"Daniel, are you still seeing Sophia?"

He paused.

"I am not in a romantic relationship with her."

"That wasn't exactly my question."

He placed his fork down.

"I communicate with her because of the pregnancy. I attend appointments when I can, and I make sure she has what she needs."

Amara nodded.

"Good."

"Amara, I don't want you to think there is anything happening between us."

"Daniel, she is carrying your child. You have responsibilities towards her and the baby. I don't want you neglecting them because you are trying to prove something to me."

"I won't."

"Then don't hide things from me."

"I promise."

She looked at him carefully.

"I mean it. If something happens, I would rather hear it from you than discover it somewhere else."

Daniel nodded.

"I understand."

But even as he spoke, he knew there were details about the beginning of his relationship with Sophia that he had not fully explained.

He told himself those details were in the past.

He believed that bringing them up would only create unnecessary problems.

That was his first mistake.

The following week, Amara attended a small family gathering.

Her cousin, who had recently returned from Abuja, was excited to see her.

During their conversation, she asked about Daniel.

"Are you people back together?"

Amara laughed.

"We are talking."

"That's good. I always liked him."

Amara's smile faded slightly.

"Well, we are taking things slowly."

Her cousin nodded.

"Just be careful. People can change, but you should not ignore the things that hurt you."

"I know."

Later that evening, Amara received a call from Daniel.

He sounded unusually excited.

"Guess what?"

"What?"

"I got an opportunity to work on a major project."

"Really? Congratulations!"

"Thank you. I wanted you to be the first person I told."

Amara smiled.

"I'm happy for you."

"I wish you were here."

"Daniel, you know I can't always be available."

"I know. I just miss you."

She became quiet.

"Daniel?"

"Yes?"

"I need you to understand something. I cannot become the old Amara overnight."

"I understand."

"Sometimes I may be happy today and distant tomorrow. It doesn't mean I am playing games. I am still healing."

Daniel sighed.

"I know. I will be patient."

"Thank you."

After the call, Daniel looked at his phone.

He was beginning to understand that reconciliation was not a straight road.

There were days when Amara seemed close to him.

There were other days when she appeared to be miles away.

He wanted the relationship back so badly that he sometimes forgot she was still dealing with the consequences of his actions.

Meanwhile, Sophia had another appointment.

Daniel had promised to accompany her but cancelled at the last minute because of work.

Sophia was disappointed.

When she returned home, she sent him a message.

Sophia: I understand that you are busy, but I need you to be more involved.

Daniel replied.

Daniel: I'm sorry. I will make it up to you.

Sophia: This is not about making it up to me. It is about the baby.

Daniel stared at the message.

She was right.

He had become so focused on winning Amara back that he was failing to balance another responsibility.

He called Sophia.

"Hello."

"Hi."

"I am sorry about today."

Sophia sighed.

"It's fine."

"No, it isn't. I should have been there."

"Daniel, I am not asking you to be my husband. But you are the baby's father. I need to know that you understand that."

"I do."

"Then show it."

The call ended.

Daniel remained silent for several minutes.

That evening, he visited Kelechi.

His friend listened as he explained everything.

"You cannot build a relationship with Amara by neglecting Sophia and the baby," Kelechi said.

"I am not neglecting them."

"Then stop behaving as if your entire life revolves around getting Amara back."

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

"I love her."

"I know. But love does not cancel responsibility."

Daniel nodded slowly.

Kelechi continued.

"You have to become a responsible man whether Amara accepts you or not."

Those words stayed with Daniel.

The following morning, he called Sophia and arranged a new appointment.

He also made plans to prepare properly for the baby's arrival.

Meanwhile, Amara received an unexpected message from an unknown number.

Unknown: Good afternoon, Amara. My name is Michael. We met briefly at Teni's birthday gathering last year. I hope you remember me.

Amara stared at the message.

She remembered the name vaguely.

Before she could reply, another message arrived.

Michael: I got your number from Teni. I hope you don't mind. I wanted to ask if you would be interested in discussing a job opportunity with me.

Amara sat up.

A job opportunity?

She had been applying for positions for weeks.

Amara: Good afternoon. I remember you. What kind of opportunity?

Michael explained that a company he worked with was recruiting for an administrative position.

He offered to send her the details.

Amara thanked him.

She had no idea that this simple conversation would become the beginning of another important chapter in her life.
