Chapter 8 - A new beginning

Sophia's hand trembled in Erik's as they approached her parents' throne-like chairs, the intricate carvings on the wood seeming to mock her with their beauty. The golden light of the candles danced across the room, casting shadows on the walls as the nobles and guests whispered and murmured among themselves. King Jovan beamed with pride, his eyes shining with satisfaction, his silver-tipped crown glimmering in the candlelight. Beside him, Queen Scarlett smiled warmly, her eyes misty with tears, but Sophia saw the calculation behind her eyes, the careful manipulation. Scarlett's concern was fake, a show for the nobles and guests, a way to maintain the illusion of a loving family.

"Father, Mother," Erik said, his voice respectful, his words dripping with deference. "We seek your blessings."

Jovan nodded, his voice booming across the hall, making Sophia's skin crawl. "I give you my blessing, Erik. Take care of my daughter. You've made a wise choice, aligning our kingdom with yours. The alliance will bring prosperity and power to our family... and strengthen our ties with the vampire realm."

Scarlett's voice was softer, "May you find happiness and love in your union, children." Her eyes sparkled with triumph, a reminder that Sophia was now bound to Erik, and there was nothing she could do about it. Sophia wondered if Scarlett had ever truly cared for her, or if she was just a pawn in her own game of power.

Sophia's smile felt fake, but she thanked them, her voice barely above a whisper. Erik's hand on her back was a gentle reminder to keep up appearances, to play the part of the dutiful daughter. She could feel his cold touch seeping through her dress, making her skin crawl.

As they mingled with the guests, Sophia's eyes scanned the crowd, searching for a glimpse of Liam. But he was gone, vanished into the sea of faces, leaving her with a hollow feeling in her chest. She felt a pang of disappointment, mixed with relief. It was better this way, she told herself, trying to convince herself that she was doing the right thing.

The hours ticked by, the music and laughter a cacophony in her ears, a reminder that she was trapped in a world of her own making. Sophia's feet ached, her smile frozen in place, her cheeks hurting from the effort. She excused herself, making her way to Aria's side, her sister's presence a comforting balm to her frazzled nerves.

Aria stood by the window, eyes shining with unshed tears, her face pale in the moonlight. "Aria," Sophia whispered, pulling her into a tight hug, holding onto her sister like a lifeline.

The two sisters held onto each other, tears streaming down their faces, their hearts beating as one, in sync, as they always had been. "I'll miss you," Aria whispered, her voice shaking like a leaf in the wind.

"I'll be fine," Sophia lied, her voice muffled against Aria's shoulder, trying to convince herself that she was doing the right thing. "I'll come visit soon. We'll write to each other, and I'll find a way to come back to you."

Aria pulled back, her eyes searching Sophia's face, as if looking for the truth, for a glimpse of the sister she thought she knew. "Promise me you'll be okay. Promise me you'll find a way to be happy."

Sophia nodded, forcing a smile, trying to hide the desperation that threatened to overwhelm her. "I promise. I'll do whatever it takes to make myself happy, even if it's just a small thing."

Aria's eyes lingered on hers, as if searching for the truth, for a glimmer of hope. Then, with a small nod, she released Sophia, her hands lingering on her sister's arms like a last goodbye. "Go. You're running out of time. Don't let him see you cry."

Sophia's heart twisted, but she nodded, turning to find Erik watching her, a calculating glint in his eyes, a look that made her skin crawl. Jovan approached, his face stern, his eyes cold and calculating. "It's time, Sophia. You must leave. Your husband awaits... and the vampire realm awaits its new princess."

Sophia felt a surge of resentment, mixed with a pang of sadness. This was her father, the man who was supposed to protect her, and he was sending her away without a second thought, like she was a commodity to be traded.

Erik's hand on her back, he led her towards the door, the cool night air hitting her like a slap in the face. "Let's go, wife," he said, his voice firm but detached, like he was talking to a business partner.

Sophia nodded, her eyes locked on Aria's, the two sisters sharing a silent goodbye, a promise to hold on to each other, no matter what happened next. As they reached the carriage, Erik helped her in, his eyes glinning with a hint of triumph, a look that made her stomach twist. "All aboard, my dear. We'll arrive in the vampire realm by dawn tomorrow."

The carriage rolled out of the castle gates, and Sophia felt a sense of finality. She was really leaving. The city streets blurred together as they made their way through the crowds. As they left the city behind, the sun began to set, casting a golden glow over the rolling hills.

The carriage ride was long and arduous, the darkness outside seeming to press in on Sophia from all sides. She felt a growing sense of unease, a feeling that she was walking into the unknown. Erik sat across from her, his eyes fixed on hers, his gaze making her skin crawl.

As the hours ticked by, Sophia felt her eyelids growing heavy, her body tired from the events of the day. She closed her eyes, trying to rest, but her mind was racing, her thoughts whirling with fears and doubts.

The carriage lurched forward, jolting Sophia awake. She opened her eyes to find Erik watching her, a small smile playing on his lips. "We're almost there," he said, his voice low and husky.

Sophia's heart skipped a beat as she looked out the window, seeing the dark silhouette of the vampire realm's castle looming in the distance. Her stomach twisted with fear, her heart pounding in her chest. She was really doing this. She was really marrying a vampire.

The carriage pulled up to the castle gates, and Erik helped her out, his hand on her back guiding her towards the entrance. Sophia felt a sense of trepidation, a feeling that she was walking into a nightmare from which she might never wake up.

As they stepped inside, the doors closing behind them with a soft thud, Sophia knew that she was trapped, bound to a creature of the night, with no escape in sight.

The castle's interior was dark and foreboding, the walls seeming to press in on Sophia from all sides. Erik led her through the winding corridors, his footsteps echoing off the stone walls. Sophia felt a sense of disorientation, like she was lost in a maze.

Finally, they reached a large door, adorned with intricate carvings of bats and wolves. Erik pushed it open, revealing a grand chamber beyond. Sophia's eyes widened as she took in the sight, her heart pounding in her chest.

The chamber was filled with vampires, their eyes fixed on her as she entered. Sophia felt a wave of fear wash over her, her legs threatening to give out. Erik's hand on her back was the only thing keeping her upright.

"Welcome to the vampire realm, Sophia," he said, his voice dripping with triumph. "Welcome to your new home."
