Chapter 9 - The welcome ball

As they finished the ceremony, Erik's hand on Sophia's back guided her towards King Kael and Queen Cordelia, who were seated on their throne-like chairs. The vampires parted, creating a path for them to walk through. The golden light of the candles danced across the room, casting shadows on the walls as the nobles and guests whispered and murmured among themselves.

"Your Majesties," Erik said, his voice firm and polite. "We seek your blessings."

King Kael nodded, his eyes sparkling with amusement. "I give you my blessing, Prince Erik. May your union bring prosperity and power to our realm."

Queen Cordelia smiled, her voice softer, "May happiness and love be in your union, children."

Erik bowed, his expression unreadable. Sophia curtsied, her eyes downcast. She was trying to process everything that had just happened, but it felt like a dream, a nightmare that she couldn't wake up from.

As they turned to leave, Sophia's legs suddenly gave out, and she fainted. Erik quickly caught her, scooping her up in his arms. His assistant, a tall, slender vampire with piercing green eyes, appeared beside him, bowing low.

"Your Highness, shall I prepare a chamber for the princess?" he asked, his voice smooth and respectful.

Erik nodded, his expression cold. "Yes, have a chamber prepared for her. I'll take her there now."

The assistant nodded and vanished, teleporting away to carry out Erik's orders. Erik began to walk through the winding corridors of the castle, his footsteps echoing off the stone walls. Sophia's head lolled against his shoulder, her face pale and vulnerable.

As he reached the chamber, Sophia stirred, her eyes fluttering open for a moment before she fainted again. Erik's eyes narrowed, a flicker of concern crossing his face before he pushed it away.

His assistant reappeared, followed by a group of maids who began to tend to Sophia's needs.

"See that she's taken care of," Erik said, his voice firm.

The maids nodded, curtsying low. "Yes, Your Highness."

Erik turned to his assistant. "Let's go, we have business to attend to."

The assistant nodded, and together they left the chamber, leaving Sophia in the care of the maids.

As they walked away, Erik's expression remained cold and calculating. "Make sure the trade agreements are finalized by tomorrow," he said to his assistant.

The assistant nodded, his eyes gleaming with understanding. "Yes, Your Highness. I'll see to it personally."

Erik nodded, his eyes narrowing as he began to plan his next move. They walked through the castle, Erik's assistant teleporting ahead to prepare for their meetings.

As they reached the council chamber, Erik's assistant opened the door, bowing low. "Your Highness, the council is waiting for you."

Erik nodded, his expression unreadable. He walked into the chamber, his eyes scanning the room. The council members looked up at him, their faces a mixture of curiosity and wariness.

Erik sat down at the head of the table, his assistant standing behind him. "Let's discuss the upcoming ball and the princess's schedule," he said, his voice firm.

The council members nodded, and the meeting began. They discussed the details of the ball, Sophia's schedule, and the arrangements for her meetings with the advisors.

As the meeting drew to a close, Erik stood up, his expression cold. "I expect all of you to show the princess the respect and courtesy due to her position."

The council members nodded, their faces serious. "Yes, Your Highness," they said in unison.

Erik nodded, his eyes glancing at his assistant. "Let's go," he said, his voice low.

The assistant nodded, and together they left the chamber, walking back to Erik's quarters.

As they walked, Erik's assistant spoke, his voice low. "Your Highness, I've made arrangements for Princess Sophia's schedule. She'll be attending the ball tomorrow night, and meeting with our advisors to learn about our customs and traditions."

Erik nodded, his expression unreadable. "Good. Make sure she's prepared."

The assistant nodded, his eyes gleaming with understanding. "Yes, Your Highness. I'll see to it personally."

Erik nodded, his eyes narrowing as he began to plan his next move. He would do whatever it took to secure his kingdom's future, no matter the cost.

As they reached Erik's quarters, he dismissed his assistant, his expression cold. "I'll be in my study. Don't disturb me unless it's urgent."

The assistant nodded, bowing low. "Yes, Your Highness."

Erik walked into his study, his eyes scanning the room. He poured himself a glass of wine, his expression unreadable. He was a ruthless and cunning prince, and he would stop at nothing to achieve his goals.

As he sat down at his desk, he felt a faint sense of satisfaction. The marriage to Sophia was a strategic move, one that would bring peace and prosperity to their kingdoms.

Erik's eyes gleamed with calculation as he raised his glass in a silent toast. The game was on, and he was ready to play.
