Chapter 1 - Chapter One – The Letter

The stable doors exploded inward.

Rain and icy wind rushed into the dim stable, sending horses into a frenzy. They reared against their stalls, shrieking in terror as thunder rolled over Ironholt Keep.

A man staggered through the doorway.

His armor, once polished silver, was blackened with soot and drenched in blood. A jagged wound stretched across his side, crimson spilling onto the straw beneath his boots. Every step looked like his last.

Behind him came the distant sound of shouting.

"They're here!"

"Search every building!"

"No one escapes!"

Darian Solace froze where he stood, a worn leather brush slipping from his fingers.

The wounded knight raised his head.

His weary eyes searched the stable until they settled on Darian.

"There you are..."

His voice was barely more than a whisper.

"I finally found you."

Before Darian could react, the knight collapsed onto one knee.

Instinct overcame fear.

Darian rushed forward.

"Easy!" he said, catching the stranger before he hit the ground completely. "You're badly hurt."

The knight laughed weakly.

"So... Rowan was right..."

"You still help strangers."

Darian frowned.

"You know my name?"

The knight ignored the question.

With trembling fingers, he reached beneath his battered breastplate and pulled out a leather packet sealed with dark crimson wax.

An unfamiliar crest was pressed into the seal a blazing ember surrounded by a broken circle.

He shoved it into Darian's hands.

"Take it."

The packet felt surprisingly heavy.

"What is this?"

"The future..."

The knight coughed violently, blood staining his lips.

"...or the end of it."

Darian stared in confusion.

"I'm only a stablehand."

"Then you're exactly who I needed."

Outside, boots pounded across wet cobblestones.

Closer.

Much closer.

The knight grabbed Darian's wrist with surprising strength.

"Listen carefully."

"If they discover that letter..."

"They'll burn this kingdom to its foundations."

Darian had spent all nineteen years of his life inside Ironholt Keep.

He knew every horse by name.

Every cracked stone in the stable walls.

Every scent of hay, smoke, and old leather.

The stables were his refuge.

He wasn't a knight.

He wasn't a noble.

He wasn't anyone important.

That was exactly how he preferred it.

In the Kingdom of Aeldenwyr, unnoticed people lived the longest.

King Aldric Valebright ruled with fear instead of loyalty. His trusted adviser, Archon Veyric, extended the king's influence into every corner of the realm. Villages paid impossible taxes, soldiers disappeared without explanation, and anyone accused of treason simply vanished.

People had stopped believing in heroes.

They believed only in survival.

As a child, Darian had loved listening to the old stablemaster's stories.

Stories of the Emberborn.

Warriors who wielded living fire.

Kings whose flames could heal the dying or reduce entire armies to ash.

But power had corrupted them.

Their pride had ignited wars that nearly destroyed the world.

When the war ended, the Emberborn disappeared.

Some said they were hunted to extinction.

Others claimed they became monsters.

Either way...

Fire had become something people feared.

The wounded knight's breathing grew weaker.

"I don't understand," Darian admitted.

"Why me?"

The knight's expression softened.

"Because no one will ever suspect you."

His grip tightened.

"You must carry this letter beyond the Frostveil Mountains."

"Find the High King."

"Place it in no one else's hands."

Darian shook his head.

"I've never even left Ironholt."

"You will."

"I can't."

"You must."

Before Darian could answer

The stable doors crashed open again.

"Step away from him."

The voice was calm.

Cold.

Commanding.

A cloaked woman stepped inside.

Rain dripped from the edge of her hood as she crossed the stable with measured confidence.

She looked first at the wounded knight...

Then at the sealed letter...

Finally at Darian.

"Rowan," she whispered.

Relief flickered across the knight's battered face.

"You made it..."

The woman knelt beside him.

"What happened?"

"Veyric..." Rowan gasped.

"He found out."

"The letter..."

His trembling hand pointed toward Darian.

"I gave it... to him."

Her eyes settled on Darian.

Sharp.

Calculating.

She studied him for only a heartbeat before speaking.

"Good."

Darian blinked.

"Good?"

"You're still alive."

She rose to her feet and lowered her hood.

Dark hair framed a face both beautiful and battle-worn. Mud stained her travel cloak, and exhaustion shadowed her eyes.

Yet there was unmistakable strength in the way she carried herself.

"My name is Serenya Thorne."

"I was sworn to protect Rowan."

She looked directly into Darian's eyes.

"And now..."

"I suppose I'll have to protect you too."

Outside...

More soldiers arrived.

Torches filled the courtyard.

"They're inside!"

"Search the stables!"

"Don't let anyone escape!"

Rowan painfully drew what remained of his broken sword.

His breathing was ragged.

His legs barely supported him.

Yet his eyes burned with fierce determination.

"Go," he ordered.

"Both of you."

Serenya drew her blade.

The steel shimmered with faint runes beneath the torchlight.

She grabbed Darian by the arm.

"There is a hidden passage behind the feed storage."

Darian hesitated.

"What about him?"

Rowan smiled.

For the first time since entering the stable...

He looked at peace.

"My road ends here."

"But yours..."

He looked directly at Darian.

"...is only beginning."

The stable doors burst apart.

Armored soldiers poured inside.

Rowan roared and charged alone.

Steel crashed against steel.

Serenya dragged Darian toward the hidden passage.

As they disappeared into the darkness beneath Ironholt Keep, Darian looked back one final time.

He saw Rowan standing against impossible odds, surrounded by enemies.

Then, for the briefest moment...

Fire flickered across the dying knight's eyes.

Not ordinary fire.

Ancient.

Golden.

Alive.

The soldiers hesitated.

The stable seemed to glow.

And then the darkness swallowed everything.

Clutching the mysterious letter against his chest, Darian disappeared into the night beside Serenya, unaware that the fate of kingdoms and the truth of his own blood had begun with a single knock on a stable door.
