Chapter 3 - Chapter Three - The Whispering Woods

The forest swallowed them.

The towering pines closed behind Darian and Serenya like silent guardians, their branches weaving together until the stars disappeared beneath a roof of black needles. Only the pale moonlight filtering through the canopy offered enough light to follow the narrow game trail winding deeper into the wilderness.

Neither of them spoke.

Behind them, the horns of Valebright echoed faintly through the night.

"They're still searching," Darian said between heavy breaths.

"They will be until sunrise," Serenya replied without slowing. "And after that... they'll send hunters."

Darian glanced over his shoulder one last time.

Beyond the trees, the distant lights of Valebright flickered like dying candles. Everything he had ever known lay behind those walls

his stable, his friends, the simple life he had taken for granted.

Now it was gone.

Forever.

They walked for nearly an hour before Serenya finally raised a hand.

"We stop here."

A small clearing opened before them. An ancient oak stood at its center, its roots twisting through the earth like the fingers of a giant.

Serenya knelt beside a fallen log and began gathering dry branches hidden beneath the leaves.

Darian watched her.

"You knew this place."

"I've been here before."

"When?"

"Long before tonight."

She struck flint against steel.

A tiny flame danced to life.

Within moments, a small fire crackled between them.

For the first time since leaving Ironholt, Darian felt warmth.

His aching legs finally gave out.

He sat heavily upon the grass.

Neither spoke for several minutes.

The silence was strangely comforting.

Until Darian finally asked the question that had haunted him since Rowan had placed the letter in his hands.

"Who was Sir Rowan?"

Serenya stared into the flames.

"He was one of the last Wardens of the Ember."

"The Ember?"

She nodded.

"For generations, a secret order protected those descended from the Ember Kings."

"I thought the Emberborn were extinct."

"So does everyone else."

She looked up.

"That is exactly why our enemies have been winning."

Darian pulled the sealed letter from inside his tunic.

The crimson wax reflected the firelight.

"I still don't understand why he chose me."

Serenya's expression softened.

"I don't think Rowan chose you."

"What do you mean?"

"I think..."

She hesitated.

"...the letter did."

Darian frowned.

"The letter?"

"It carries an ancient seal."

She pointed toward the wax.

"That crest belonged only to the Ember Kings."

"You've seen it before?"

"My father showed it to me when I was a child."

Darian looked down at the strange symbol again.

A rising ember enclosed by a broken circle.

It looked ordinary.

Yet somehow...

Alive.

"What happens if I open it?"

Serenya's face became serious.

"I don't know."

"You don't know?"

"No."

"Rowan never told you?"

"He only said one thing."

She looked directly into Darian's eyes.

"The heir must open it when the fire remembers his name."

Darian blinked.

"That makes no sense."

"Not yet."

A sudden breeze swept through the clearing.

The fire flickered violently.

The forest became quiet.

Too quiet.

No insects.

No owls.

No wind.

Serenya slowly stood.

Her hand rested on the hilt of her sword.

"Something's wrong."

Darian rose beside her.

"What is it?"

She didn't answer.

Instead...

She listened.

Then—

A twig snapped.

Not nearby.

All around them.

Another snap.

Then another.

As though invisible feet circled the clearing.

Darian's pulse quickened.

"Do you hear that?"

"I do."

Serenya drew her blade.

The silver runes etched along its edge began to glow softly.

"Stay behind me."

A low growl rolled through the darkness.

Not human.

Not wolf.

Something in between.

Golden eyes appeared between the trees.

Then another pair.

And another.

Five...

Six...

No...

More.

They watched without moving.

Darian swallowed.

"What are they?"

Serenya's voice was barely above a whisper.

"Shadow Hounds."

"They're not natural."

One of the creatures stepped into the firelight.

It resembled a wolf, but its fur was black as ash, and cracks of glowing crimson ran beneath its skin.

Smoke drifted from its jaws with every breath.

Its eyes never left Darian.

"It's looking at me."

"It can smell the Ember."

"The Ember?"

"The blood."

Darian felt his stomach tighten.

"They're hunting me?"

"They've always been."

The largest beast lowered its head.

Then charged.

"Run!" Serenya shouted.

Darian didn't hesitate.

He sprinted between the trees as the Shadow Hound crashed through the clearing behind him.

Branches whipped across his face.

Roots caught at his boots.

The forest blurred around him.

Another growl echoed to his right.

A second beast leaped.

Serenya intercepted it.

Steel flashed.

The glowing runes upon her sword blazed brilliantly as the blade struck the creature's shoulder.

The beast howled.

Black smoke burst from the wound instead of blood.

"Keep moving!" she yelled.

Darian stumbled over a fallen branch.

The sealed letter slipped from inside his tunic.

"No!"

He dropped to his knees, grabbing it just as another Shadow Hound landed before him.

It snarled.

Its burning eyes reflected in the crimson wax.

Darian backed away.

His hands trembled.

There was nowhere left to run.

The beast crouched.

Ready to leap.

"I don't want to die..."

The words escaped before he realized he'd spoken them.

The Shadow Hound tensed, muscles coiling as it prepared to strike.

Darian clutched the sealed letter tightly against his chest and shut his eyes.

Nothing happened.

No fire.

No miracle.

Only the sound of his own heartbeat pounding in his ears.

Then...

The beast stopped.

Its ears flattened.

A low whine escaped its throat as it stared at Darian not with hunger, but with something that looked unsettlingly like fear.

The other Shadow Hounds froze as well.

One by one, they stepped backward into the darkness.

The largest among them growled softly, refusing to take its eyes off Darian.

For several long moments, neither man nor beast moved.

Then, without warning, the great hound turned and vanished into the trees.

The others followed.

Within seconds, the forest was silent once again.

Only the crackling campfire remained.

Darian slowly lowered the letter, his hands still trembling.

"They... they just left."

Serenya did not answer immediately.

She scanned the tree line, her sword still raised.

Only when she was certain the creatures had gone did she lower her blade.

"I've fought Shadow Hounds before," she said quietly.

"They do not retreat."

"Then... why did they?"

"I don't know."

Her eyes drifted briefly to the sealed letter beneath Darian's trembling hands.

"...but they sensed something."

She looked back toward the dark forest.

"And whatever frightened them..."

"...it wasn't me."

Neither of them noticed the lone figure standing on a distant ridge, hidden among the trees.

Wrapped in a black cloak.

Watching.

Waiting.

A faint smile crossed the stranger's lips.

"So..."

The voice drifted through the night like smoke.

"The heir has finally stepped into the light."

The figure turned and disappeared into the darkness before the wind carried away the last whisper.
