Chapter 2 - Chapter Two - Into the shadows

The rain fell harder as Darian followed Serenya through the maze of narrow alleys behind Ironholt Keep. The cries of soldiers echoed through the streets behind them, growing louder with every passing moment.

"Search every corner!" someone shouted. "The stable boy couldn't have gone far!"

Darian's heart pounded against his ribs. The sealed letter felt heavier with every step, hidden beneath his tunic like a burning secret.

"I don't even know where we're going," he whispered.

"You don't need to," Serenya replied without slowing. "You only need to keep moving."

They turned sharply into another alley, its stone walls slick with rain. Water dripped from broken rooftops, forming shallow pools beneath their boots.

Darian stole a glance at the woman leading him.

She couldn't have been much older than him, yet she moved with the confidence of someone who had survived countless battles. Every few steps she paused, listening, scanning rooftops and crossroads before continuing.

"You knew Sir Rowan," Darian finally said.

A shadow crossed her face.

"He was more than a friend."

"You expected him tonight?"

"I prayed he would make it."

Silence settled between them.

"I'm sorry," Darian said quietly.

"So am I."

For several moments neither spoke.

The only sounds were the rain and the distant clang of soldiers searching the city.

At last Serenya stopped beside what appeared to be an abandoned blacksmith's workshop.

The forge had long gone cold, its chimney cracked and overgrown with ivy.

She pushed against the rusted door.

Nothing happened.

Then she reached beneath the stone doorstep and pressed a hidden iron switch.

With a low rumble, part of the workshop floor shifted aside, revealing a narrow staircase descending into darkness.

Darian stared.

"A secret passage?"

"Older than the kingdom," Serenya answered.

She lit a small lantern.

"Come."

The tunnel beneath Ironholt was cold and damp.

Ancient stone walls disappeared into darkness, marked with faded carvings Darian couldn't read.

"What is this place?" he asked.

"A forgotten road."

"Who built it?"

"The Ember Kings."

Darian frowned.

"I thought they were only stories."

Serenya looked back at him.

"That is exactly what the king wants people to believe."

They walked in silence.

The deeper they descended, the quieter the world became.

Even the thunder above seemed far away.

Then Darian noticed something strange.

The walls...

They glowed.

Not brightly, but with faint veins of amber light running through the stone.

"What is that?"

Serenya raised her lantern.

"The mountain remembers."

"The mountain?"

"These tunnels were carved around veins of Emberstone."

She placed her hand against the glowing rock.

"It stores echoes of the ancient flame."

Darian hesitated before touching it himself.

The moment his fingers brushed the stone

A flash.

He saw a battlefield.

Thousands of warriors.

Golden fire pouring across the sky.

Then it was gone.

He stumbled backward, breathing hard.

"What... what was that?"

Serenya caught his arm before he fell.

"You saw something?"

"I don't know."

His voice trembled.

"It felt real."

She studied him carefully.

"You shouldn't have been able to see the memories."

"What memories?"

She didn't answer.

Instead, her expression grew thoughtful.

Almost worried.

At the end of the tunnel stood an enormous circular door covered in faded runes.

Its surface was carved with the image of a blazing ember surrounded by twelve stars.

Serenya reached into her cloak and produced a bronze key unlike anything Darian had ever seen.

Before she could insert it

A horn echoed through the tunnel.

Not behind them.

Ahead.

Serenya froze.

"No..."

"What is it?"

Her face turned pale.

"They've found another entrance."

A heartbeat later came the unmistakable sound of armored boots striking stone.

Dozens of them.

Torchlight flickered beyond the great door.

Darian instinctively reached beneath his tunic, gripping the sealed letter.

"They're waiting for us."

Serenya slowly drew her sword.

Its blade shimmered with faint silver runes that awakened in the darkness.

"They're not here for me," she said.

Her eyes met Darian's.

"They're here for you."

The first soldier stepped into view.

His black armor bore no royal crest.

Instead, a strange symbol had been burned into his breastplate.

A hollow flame surrounding a dark crown.

He smiled beneath his helmet.

"Found them."

More soldiers poured into the tunnel behind him.

Serenya stepped forward, placing herself between Darian and the advancing figures.

"Stay behind me," she whispered.

Darian looked at the letter.

Then at the glowing walls.

Then at the soldiers closing in.

For the first time in his life...

He understood that there was no turning back.
