The moon hung low over the valley, its pale light veiled behind drifting mist. Cold air swept through the forest, carrying the scent of wet leaves, damp earth, and distant smoke. Every sound seemed unnaturally loud the crunch of boots over fallen branches, the whisper of wind through the trees, the rustle of unseen creatures hidden beneath the undergrowth.
Serenya led the way without hesitation, moving with the silent confidence of someone who knew the wilderness well. Her hand never strayed far from the sword at her side, and every few moments she paused just long enough to study the darkness before pressing onward.
Darian followed close behind.
The events in Ashbrook refused to leave his thoughts. The hooded stranger's smile lingered in his mind like a splinter beneath the skin. It hadn't been the smile of a man who had merely spotted two travelers.
It had been the smile of someone who had found exactly what he was searching for.
He looked back again.
Nothing.
Only mist drifting between the trees.
"How much farther?" he asked quietly.
"Not far," Serenya answered without turning. "There's an abandoned chapel beyond the ridge. We can rest there until sunrise."
Darian hesitated before asking the question weighing on him.
"Do you think... whoever was watching us knows about it?"
Serenya slowed for the briefest moment.
"If he does," she replied, "then we'll discover that soon enough."
Neither spoke again.
Nearly an hour later, the trees opened into a small clearing.
At its center stood the ruins of an ancient stone chapel.
Time had not been kind to it.
The roof had partially collapsed, ivy crawled over cracked walls, and broken stained-glass windows lay scattered across the ground like forgotten jewels. Moss covered the old stone steps, while faded statues stood guard over the entrance, their faces worn smooth by centuries of rain.
Yet despite its decay, the place possessed an undeniable sense of peace.
Darian felt it the moment he stepped inside.
The air seemed warmer.
Quieter.
As though the world itself had paused beyond its walls.
Serenya pushed open the heavy wooden doors.
Their slow creak echoed through the empty hall.
Dust floated through silver beams of moonlight that spilled from the broken ceiling. Wooden pews lay overturned, and vines climbed across the cracked floor toward a shattered altar at the far end of the room.
Behind the altar, carved into the stone wall, was an unfamiliar symbol.
A sword surrounded by a ring of flame.
Darian stopped.
"I've seen that before."
Serenya looked at him.
"Where?"
"In one of Rowan's old journals."
"You read his journals?"
"Only a few pages. He never let anyone touch them, but sometimes he'd leave them open while I cleaned the stables."
He stepped closer to the carving.
"I never understood what it meant."
Serenya studied the symbol for several moments.
"Neither do I."
"But Rowan clearly did."
They unpacked their small supplies.
Serenya gathered broken pieces of wood from the collapsed pews while Darian lit a small lantern.
Its gentle glow pushed back the darkness without filling the chapel with enough light to attract unwanted attention.
For a while neither spoke.
The silence was almost comforting.
Until Darian finally broke it.
"Do you trust Rowan?"
Serenya looked surprised.
"With my life."
"Then why won't you tell me everything?"
She sighed.
"Because I don't know everything."
He stared at her.
"I thought Rowan told you."
"He told me only enough to begin this journey."
"And the rest?"
"He said the answers were meant for someone else."
Darian's eyes drifted toward the sealed letter resting beside his pack.
"You mean... me?"
"I don't know."
Her honesty caught him off guard.
"I wish I could promise otherwise."
The lantern flickered.
A cold draft swept through the chapel.
Serenya immediately became alert.
"Did you feel that?"
Darian nodded.
"The wind?"
"No."
She slowly stood.
"The wind stopped."
He listened carefully.
She was right.
The forest had gone completely silent.
No insects.
No birds.
No rustling leaves.
Only silence.
Then...
A stone shifted outside.
Both of them froze.
Another.
Footsteps.
Careful.
Measured.
Approaching the chapel.
Serenya extinguished the lantern with a quick breath.
Darkness swallowed the room.
She drew her sword.
"Stay behind the altar."
Darian obeyed immediately, crouching beside the fallen stone.
His heartbeat thundered in his ears.
The chapel doors creaked open.
Moonlight spilled across the cracked floor.
Two armored soldiers stepped inside.
Their cloaks were damp from the night's mist, and each carried a drawn sword.
"Search everything," one whispered.
"They couldn't have gone far."
The second soldier lifted his torch higher.
Its light crept slowly across the broken pews.
Across the cracked pillars.
Closer.
Closer.
Darian held his breath.
The letter beneath his cloak suddenly felt strangely warm.
Not hot.
Just...
Warm.
He instinctively placed a hand over it.
The feeling disappeared almost immediately.
"What was that?" one soldier muttered.
His companion frowned.
"I thought I saw something."
The torchlight swept across the altar.
Only inches from where Darian hid.
Serenya waited.
Patient.
Perfectly still.
The lead soldier stepped around the altar.
The instant his back turned
Serenya moved.
She struck the flat of her blade against his wrist.
His sword clattered across the stone floor.
Before the second soldier could react, she drove her shoulder into him, sending both crashing into a crumbling pillar.
Ancient stone groaned.
Cracks raced across the ceiling.
"Run!" Serenya shouted.
Darian didn't hesitate.
He sprinted toward the doorway.
Behind him, part of the old roof collapsed with a deafening roar.
Dust exploded through the chapel as broken beams crashed between them and the soldiers.
Shouts echoed behind the rubble.
"They're escaping!"
"After them!"
But the fallen stones blocked the passage long enough.
Serenya grabbed Darian's arm.
"This way!"
Together they disappeared into the forest once more.
They did not stop until the eastern sky began to pale.
At the edge of a narrow stream, Serenya finally allowed herself to breathe.
Darian collapsed onto a moss-covered rock.
"I thought..."
He struggled to catch his breath.
"...they had us."
"So did I."
She knelt beside the stream and washed the dust from her hands.
For several minutes only the sound of flowing water filled the silence.
Finally Darian looked at the letter again.
"When they came close..."
He hesitated.
"I thought I felt something."
Serenya looked up.
"What kind of something?"
"The letter became warm."
She frowned thoughtfully.
"Only for a moment."
"Did you open it?"
"No."
"Did the seal break?"
He shook his head.
"Then perhaps it was only your imagination."
Perhaps.
Yet somehow...
Neither of them truly believed that.
As the first rays of dawn climbed above the mountains, Serenya rose to her feet.
"We should keep moving."
"Where now?"
She looked east, toward the distant snow-covered peaks barely visible against the morning sky.
"Frostvale."
Darian followed her gaze.
"So that's where Rowan wanted us to go."
She nodded once.
"If we're fortunate..."
"...the answers we've been searching for are waiting there."
Without another word, they continued toward the mountains.
Neither noticed the raven perched high upon the chapel ruins behind them.
Watching.
Waiting.
And when they disappeared into the forest...
The bird spread its wings and flew east.
As though carrying news to someone already expecting them.
