Snow fell like drifting ash, carried upon a relentless mountain wind that howled through the narrow pass. The world had become a kingdom of white and gray, where jagged cliffs rose like the teeth of forgotten giants and every breath burned against the lungs. Frost clung to the pines, their branches bowing beneath its weight, while sheets of ice shimmered across the rocky trail.
Darian pulled his cloak tighter around himself as he trudged after Serenya. His boots sank into the fresh snow with every step, leaving a trail that the wind quickly erased. The cold seeped through leather and wool alike, but it was not the frost that unsettled him.
It was the fire.
It pulsed quietly beneath his skin, an ember refusing to die no matter how fiercely the mountain tried to smother it.
Serenya walked ahead without complaint, her movements steady despite the uneven ground. Frost dusted the edges of her dark cloak, and loose strands of hair had frozen against her cheeks. She never seemed to lose her balance, navigating the winding trail as though she had spent years among these mountains.
They had spoken little since dawn.
The conversation from the previous day lingered between them like an unfinished prayer. Serenya had revealed enough to leave Darian with more questions than answers, yet she had carefully avoided the truths Rowan had sworn to protect until they reached the Sanctum.
The silence finally became too heavy.
"You should rest," Serenya said, glancing over her shoulder. Her voice was almost swallowed by the wind.
"I'm fine," Darian answered.
The lie came too quickly.
His legs ached from days of travel, his hands still stung where uncontrolled fire had scorched them, and exhaustion tugged at every muscle. Yet pride kept him moving.
Serenya studied him for a brief moment before facing forward again.
"You don't have to prove your strength every moment."
"I'm not."
"You are."
A faint smile crossed her face.
"And you're terrible at hiding it."
Despite everything, Darian managed a quiet laugh.
The trail narrowed as towering walls of ice rose on either side.
Within the frozen walls, strange shapes seemed trapped beneath the crystal figures in broken armor, shattered banners, weathered faces staring silently into eternity.
Darian slowed.
"What are those?"
Serenya followed his gaze.
"The mountain remembers."
He frowned.
"What do you mean?"
She rested a gloved hand against the ice.
"Long before the Valebrights claimed the throne, these passes became battlefields. Warriors fell here during the last campaigns of the Radiant Order. Winter claimed their bodies before their families ever found them."
Darian stared at the ghostly outlines beneath the ice.
"They're still here..."
"The snow buries many things."
She continued walking.
"But mountains rarely forget."
The words lingered in Darian's thoughts as they pressed onward.
By afternoon, the storm worsened.
Snow whirled across the path until the world beyond a few paces disappeared beneath white mist.
They finally found shelter beneath an overhanging cliff where the wind could not reach them so fiercely.
Serenya knelt beside a pile of dry branches hidden beneath the rocks and struck flint against steel.
After several attempts, a small fire crackled to life.
Its warmth was weak but welcome.
She unpacked what little remained of their food two strips of dried meat, a handful of nuts, and stale bread.
Darian accepted his portion without complaint.
"We'll need supplies soon," he observed.
"I know."
"If Frostvale is still another day's journey..."
"We'll make it."
Her confidence never seemed to waver.
For several minutes they ate in silence while the storm raged outside.
Eventually Darian spoke.
"You once said Corvus fought beside your father."
Serenya's hand paused above the fire.
"I did."
"Do you ever wonder why he betrayed him?"
The question lingered between them.
Finally she sighed.
"I stopped asking myself that years ago."
"But why?"
She stared into the dancing flames.
"Because no answer changes what happened."
The fire reflected in her eyes.
"My father trusted him."
Her voice had grown quieter.
"They trained together."
"They protected each other."
"They believed in the same oath."
She swallowed.
"When Corvus turned against the Order... he didn't simply destroy lives."
"He destroyed trust."
Darian lowered his eyes.
"I'm sorry."
She offered a faint smile.
"So am I."
Silence settled over them once more.
After a while Darian spoke again.
"He'll answer for it one day."
Serenya looked at him.
"You sound certain."
"I am."
She nodded slowly.
"Hold on to that determination."
Her expression grew serious.
"But don't let it become hatred."
"Hatred burns longer than fire."
Night descended swiftly.
The storm eased, leaving only a gentle snowfall drifting across the mountains.
Wrapped in their cloaks, they slept beside the dying fire.
Hours later...
Darian's eyes snapped open.
Something had awakened him.
The fire had faded into glowing embers.
Moonlight poured across the snow outside.
Everything was silent.
Too silent.
Then he heard it.
A whisper.
Soft.
Ancient.
Almost carried upon the wind.
"Rise..."
His heartbeat quickened.
The voice came again.
"Child of fire..."
He slowly stood.
The snow near the cave entrance began to shimmer.
A bitter chill swept through the air.
Frost crept across the ground toward him.
Yet wherever it touched his boots...
It melted.
"Darian?"
Serenya was awake instantly.
She rose, hand already gripping her sword.
"What happened?"
Before he could answer...
A sharp crack echoed through the mountains.
The frozen ground outside split open.
Dark shapes emerged from the drifting snow.
They wore ancient armor worn away by centuries of ice.
Their hollow eyes glowed with pale blue light.
Their movements were slow...
Silent...
Unnatural.
Serenya's face hardened.
"Frost Wraiths."
"They're real?" Darian whispered.
"The old stories rarely lie."
The nearest spirit drifted forward.
Its rusted blade scraped across the ice.
Serenya stepped between it and Darian.
"Stay behind me."
The first wraith attacked.
Steel flashed.
The glowing runes upon Serenya's sword ignited, sending silver light across the cavern.
Her blade sliced through the spirit.
The creature staggered, its body dissolving into swirling frost before reforming once more.
"It won't stay down!" Darian shouted.
"There are too many!"
Another wraith lunged.
A third followed.
Fear surged through him.
The familiar heat awakened inside his chest.
"No..."
He clenched his fists.
"Not now..."
The fire ignored him.
Golden light escaped between his fingers.
The nearest wraith recoiled.
Heat exploded outward in a sudden burst—not a roaring inferno, but a brilliant wave of flame that illuminated the cave like sunrise.
The spirits cried out.
Their icy forms fractured beneath the radiant light before dissolving into drifting snow.
Silence returned.
Darian fell to one knee, breathing heavily.
His hands trembled.
The warmth faded as quickly as it had come.
Serenya hurried to him.
"You have to stop forcing it."
"I wasn't trying to."
"I know."
Her voice softened.
"And that's what frightens me."
She helped him to his feet.
"The fire is answering danger on its own."
Darian looked at his hands.
"What if one day I can't stop it?"
Serenya met his eyes.
"Then we'll make sure that day never comes."
Near dawn, they reached an abandoned stone watchpost built into the mountainside.
Time had reduced much of it to ruins.
Even so, ancient carvings still decorated the walls circles of flame surrounding upright swords.
Serenya brushed away centuries of frost.
"My father once told me these watchposts guided travelers to the Sanctum."
"They were built by the Radiant Order."
Darian studied the weathered symbols.
"They're beautiful."
"They're reminders."
"Of what?"
"That even after kingdoms fall..."
"...someone must keep the flame alive."
They remained there only long enough to recover before climbing the final ridge.
As the first rays of dawn broke across the eastern sky, the mountains suddenly opened before them.
Darian stopped breathing.
Far below, nestled within the frozen valley, stood Frostvale.
Its towers rose from the ice like frozen flames, their ancient stone glowing beneath the morning light. Smoke curled lazily from scattered chimneys, while crimson banners fluttered above walls that had stood for centuries.
Beyond the city, higher still, a solitary mountain pierced the clouds.
Its peak shimmered with a faint crimson glow beneath the snow.
Serenya stepped beside him.
"We made it."
Darian could barely find his voice.
"It's... beautiful."
Her expression remained cautious.
"And dangerous."
She looked toward the distant crimson peak.
"Beneath Frostvale lies the Sanctum."
"The answers Rowan died to protect are waiting there."
Darian tightened his grip on the sealed letter beneath his cloak.
For the first time since leaving Ironholt...
Hope felt closer than fear.
Together, they began the long descent toward the city of Frostvale, unaware that hidden eyes watched from the mountains above, waiting for the moment their journey would lead them into the heart of the ancient flame.
