Chapter 11 - Chapter Eleven – Ashes Beneath the Crown

The catacombs beneath Valebright were older than the kingdom itself.

Long before the Valebrights raised their banners above the city, before the castle crowned the hill with stone and steel, these tunnels had already carved their way through the earth. Legends claimed they had been built by the first keepers of the sacred fire, though few still remembered those stories. Time had buried them beneath newer histories, replacing truth with carefully crafted lies.

Corvus descended the ancient spiral staircase without speaking.

The only sound was the steady rhythm of his boots against worn stone.

Each step carried him deeper beneath the kingdom he had spent years defending... and years quietly helping corrupt.

A torch burned in an iron bracket fixed to the wall. Its flame should have danced brightly in the stale air, yet here it burned an unnatural shade of blue, casting long shadows that stretched like grasping fingers across the corridor.

The air smelled of smoke.

Not the comforting scent of burning wood.

This was older.

Heavier.

A mixture of incense, ash...

...and blood.

Corvus ignored it.

He had long since learned that places like this fed upon hesitation.

The deeper he descended, the warmer the air became, though no natural heat could exist so far beneath the mountain. The stones themselves pulsed with a faint crimson glow hidden beneath centuries of soot, as though molten fire still flowed somewhere below.

His expression remained unreadable.

Yet somewhere beneath that calm exterior, memories stirred.

There had been a time when walking these halls filled him with pride rather than dread.

Back then he believed he was protecting the kingdom.

Now...

He wasn't entirely certain what he served anymore.

At the foot of the staircase stood a towering iron door.

Its surface bore three burning eyes surrounded by twisting flames—the ancient sigil of the Order of the Hollow Flame.

Two silent guards waited beside it.

Neither spoke.

Neither even acknowledged his arrival.

Their faces disappeared behind soot-black masks, while veins of molten orange glowed faintly through the cracks in their armor like lava beneath cooling stone.

Without a word, they stepped aside.

The heavy doors groaned open.

Corvus entered.

The chamber beyond swallowed the torchlight.

It was enormous.

Perfectly circular.

Ancient pillars rose toward a ceiling lost in darkness, each engraved with forgotten runes that shimmered faintly beneath layers of ash.

A dozen cloaked figures stood in an unbroken ring around the chamber.

Their faces remained hidden beneath deep hoods.

No one moved.

No one spoke.

At the center burned a single stone brazier.

Its fire was unlike any Corvus had ever seen.

Blue.

Not the bright blue of a hot forge.

This flame seemed almost alive.

It twisted unnaturally, stretching upward before folding back into itself like a living creature breathing in slow rhythm.

Its light filled the chamber with an eerie glow that painted every face in ghostly color.

Standing beside it waited a woman dressed in crimson robes.

Her silver-white hair fell over her shoulders like frost.

Her pale eyes held neither warmth nor cruelty.

Only certainty.

"Corvus."

Her calm voice echoed effortlessly around the chamber.

"You've kept us waiting."

Corvus lowered his head respectfully.

"High Seer Maelra."

"I came as summoned."

She regarded him for several long moments before answering.

"You were summoned because you failed."

The words landed with surprising weight.

Around the circle, several hooded figures shifted almost imperceptibly.

"The boy lives," Maelra continued.

"The Ember Seal continues to awaken."

"The Radiant Heir walks freely toward Frostvale."

"And still..."

She stepped closer.

"...you return empty-handed."

Corvus remained perfectly still.

"I chose not to strike."

One of the cloaked elders let out a quiet scoff.

Maelra's eyebrow lifted.

"You chose?"

"The Circle gave no such permission."

Corvus finally met her gaze.

"If I had killed him then..."

"...we might have destroyed the only chance of understanding the awakening."

Silence spread through the chamber.

Several council members exchanged uneasy glances.

Maelra's expression revealed nothing.

"So."

"You've begun questioning your orders."

"No."

"I've begun questioning our assumptions."

The blue fire suddenly flared higher.

Almost as though it were listening.

Maelra slowly circled the brazier.

"Tell me, Corvus."

"When was the last time you doubted yourself?"

He didn't answer.

She smiled faintly.

"I imagine..."

"...the night Kaedric Thorne died."

For the first time since entering the chamber...

Corvus flinched.

Only slightly.

But enough.

Several hooded figures noticed.

"The High Commander of the Radiant Order."

"Your mentor."

"Your closest friend."

"And the man you murdered."

Corvus's jaw tightened.

"I obeyed."

"You obeyed," Maelra repeated.

"But did you believe?"

He looked away.

The chamber felt colder.

Some wounds refused to heal.

Even after twenty years.

The blue fire began swirling violently.

Smoke poured upward.

Instead of dispersing, it gathered into a towering silhouette.

Not flesh.

Not spirit.

Something older.

Its face remained hidden beneath living darkness.

Its body shifted constantly, never holding one shape for more than a heartbeat.

Every voice inside the chamber fell silent.

Even Maelra bowed her head.

"The Hollow Lord."

The words barely escaped above a whisper.

Corvus slowly knelt.

The creature spoke.

Its voice sounded like countless whispers layered together.

Neither male nor female.

Ancient.

Endless.

"You seek..."

"...the Last Ember."

"I do," Corvus answered.

"He walks..."

"...toward the mountain."

"Yes."

"The seal weakens."

"I know."

The Hollow Lord leaned forward.

Its smoky form drifted over the brazier.

"The boy's fire..."

"...calls to mine."

A pulse of blue flame erupted upward.

"He cannot escape destiny."

Corvus lowered his eyes.

"I will bring him."

The apparition became still.

"And..."

"...the girl?"

Corvus hesitated.

"Serenya Thorne."

The Hollow Lord remained silent for several moments.

Then...

"Kaedric's blood."

"It still resists."

Corvus nodded once.

"She protects him."

"Then..."

"...break her."

The words echoed through every corner of the chamber.

Not shouted.

Simply spoken.

Yet they carried the weight of judgment.

The blue fire collapsed inward.

The shadow vanished.

Only silence remained.

Maelra studied Corvus carefully.

"You heard the command."

"I did."

"Can you obey it?"

His answer came after a long pause.

"I always have."

She smiled.

"But not always willingly."

Corvus rose.

"I've never claimed willingness."

"Only loyalty."

Maelra laughed quietly.

"Loyalty."

"What a dangerous word."

She walked back toward the brazier.

"The Hollow Flame was never meant to preserve kingdoms."

"It exists to erase them."

Corvus frowned.

"Then why serve the crown?"

"The crown merely opened the door."

Her pale eyes gleamed.

"We serve something much older."

Something about her words unsettled him.

For years he had convinced himself every sacrifice served a greater peace.

Now...

He wasn't certain peace had ever been the goal.

Leaving the chamber felt strangely difficult.

The corridors seemed colder than before.

Their walls whispered softly, voices carried through unseen cracks in the stone.

Old promises.

Broken oaths.

Forgotten names.

Corvus stopped beside a cracked bronze mirror hanging crookedly against the wall.

His reflection stared back.

Older.

Harder.

Tired.

Then...

For only a heartbeat...

Another face appeared beside his own.

Kaedric Thorne.

Smiling.

Alive.

The image vanished almost instantly.

Corvus closed his eyes.

He remembered everything.

The burning fortress.

The screams.

Steel crossing steel.

Kaedric refusing to kneel.

And one frightened little girl...

Watching from the flames.

Serenya.

He had never forgotten the look in her eyes.

Fear.

Confusion.

Betrayal.

Those eyes haunted him still.

Later that evening, Corvus entered the upper halls where his lieutenant waited.

A young officer named Verric bowed immediately.

"My lord."

"Scouts have returned."

Corvus nodded.

"Report."

"They tracked the fugitives beyond the northern pass."

"They're moving toward Frostvale."

"As expected."

Verric hesitated.

"There is... another matter."

Corvus looked up.

"The Frostwatchers report strangers in the western valleys."

"They bear no royal banners."

"No Circle markings."

"They wear masks carved from bone."

For the first time that day...

Real concern crossed Corvus's face.

"The Order of Hollow Flame..."

He spoke the name almost to himself.

"So they have awakened as well."

Verric frowned.

"Should we engage them?"

Corvus slowly shook his head.

"No."

"If they're moving now..."

"...then even they fear what waits inside the Sanctum."

He turned toward the northern mountains visible through the narrow window.

Beyond those peaks...

Darian was walking toward a destiny no one fully understood.

Corvus's voice became little more than a whisper.

"Run while you still can, little ember."

"The mountain changes everyone who enters it."

"And not all who emerge..."

"...remain the same."
