Chapter 16 - Divine Comedy

The World on its Knees:

Outside the Academy gates, a battalion of tanks and hundreds of S-Rank Hunters were all pressed against the asphalt. The "Alpha" and "Omega" continued their broadcast, their "Divine Pressure" washing over the planet.

The Alpha (On Screen): "The era of man is over! From this day forth, the world shall offer 50% of its mana and resources to us, your true masters!"

The Panic:

In the courtyard, Serina was hyperventilating. "Alex, we have to do something! The mana they're emitting... it's suffocating! If they start a purge, the Academy will be the first to go!"

Evelyn was trembling, her hands clutching the fabric of Alex's uniform. "Alex... please... you and Allen are the only ones who aren't affected. Can't you see the sky? It's bleeding gold! The world is ending!"

The "Carefree" Duo:

Alex: (Checking his reflection in a window, fixing his hair) "Relax, Evelyn. The sky isn't bleeding; it's just a high-altitude light refraction trick. It's basically a giant lava lamp. And Serina, breathe into a paper bag or something. You're making the table vibrate."

Allen: (Staring intensely at a nearby food stall that had been abandoned) "Alex... the guy running the churro stand fainted. He left the fryer on. If I don't go over there, those churros are going to burn. That's the real tragedy here."

Alex: "Go, my friend. Save the cinnamon-sugar. I'll stay here and endure the 'divine' fashion disaster."

The Interaction:

As Allen casually strolled through a crowd of kneeling, weeping students to go fry some dough, Evelyn looked up at Alex. Her heart was racing—not just from the fear of the "Gods," but because Alex was standing there so calmly. He looked... immovable. Like a mountain that had stood since the beginning of time.

Evelyn's Thoughts: Why is he like this? Everyone is screaming, but when I'm near him... the 'Divine Pressure' doesn't feel heavy anymore. It's like he's a shield against the entire universe. She didn't realize she was still holding his arm, her face flushing a deep red despite the "apocalypse."

Alex: (Looking down at her, giving a soft, actually-kind smirk) "You okay, Evelyn? Your heart is beating faster than a hummingbird's. Don't worry about those two guys on the screen. They're just loud. Want a churro? Allen's actually a pro at the deep fryer."

Evelyn: (Stammering) "I—I... churros? Now?! Alex, how can you think about food when the 'Creators' are threatening to erase us?!"

Alex: "Because, Evie, the only thing they're 'creating' right now is a long list of copyright infringements on my names. I'll deal with them after I eat. Priorities."

The Disrespect:

On the giant screen, the "Omega" pointed toward the camera. "WE SENSE REBELLION! IN THE CITY OF THE EAST, SOME SOULS REFUSE TO KNEEL! WE SHALL SEND A DIVINE JUDGMENT TO—"

Allen: (Shouting from the churro stand, his voice carrying across the silent, terrified courtyard) "HEY! SHUT UP! I CAN'T HEAR THE SIZZLE OF THE OIL! SOME OF US ARE TRYING TO COOK OVER HERE!"

The entire courtyard went silent. Lucian, still on his knees, looked at Allen with pure horror. "He... he just told the Omega to shut up? He's dead. We're all dead."

Alex: (Snickering, leaning toward Serina) "See? Allen's got the right idea. By the way, Serina, did you finish that History essay? If the 'Alpha' blows up the school, I'm still going to need that grade to transfer."

Serina: (Screaming internally) "ALEX!!!"
