Chapter 16 - THE RIDE HOME

Chapter: The Ride Home

Jae Rin's POV

The night air in Seoul was loud.

Too loud.

Even after the concert had ended, the streets around the stadium were still filled with thousands of fans.

Security guards struggled to clear a path as Jae Rin's black car slowly rolled forward.

Fans surrounded it on all sides.

Phones were raised.

Cameras flashing nonstop.

"JAE RIN!!"

"UNNIE WE LOVE YOU!"

"QUEEN!"

Some fans were crying.

Some were laughing.

Some were screaming her name over and over again.

It had only been a few hours since she had removed her mask on stage.

And already the world felt different.

But inside the car—

Everything was quiet.

Too quiet.

Jae Rin sat in the back seat staring out the window.

Her long silky hair, still slightly messy from the concert, flowed down over the black leather seat beside her.

She hadn't changed out of her stage clothes yet.

Her eyes looked distant.

Like she wasn't really there.

The cheers outside felt far away.

Like background noise.

Because her mind kept replaying one moment.

The crowd.

The lights.

The giant stadium.

And then—

A face in the audience.

For a split second she had seen him.

Or at least she thought she had.

Keifer.

Her chest tightened slightly.

It had only been a glimpse.

A silhouette in the sea of people.

But something about it felt painfully familiar.

The posture.

The eyes.

The way he stood still while everyone else screamed.

Her fingers tightened slightly in her lap.

No.

She shook the thought away.

That was impossible.

He couldn't be here.

Not after eleven years.

Not after everything that happened with Section E.

Still…

The memory wouldn't leave.

"Jae."

The voice beside her was soft.

She blinked slowly and turned her head.

Min Jae sat next to her in the car.

He had been watching her for several minutes now.

Concern was clear in his eyes.

"You haven't said a word since we left the stadium."

She tried to smile.

"I'm just tired."

Min Jae didn't look convinced.

"You faced seventy thousand people tonight."

"You revealed your identity to the entire world."

"And now you're pretending nothing happened."

She looked down at her hands.

"It's just… a lot."

Outside, the crowd suddenly surged closer to the car.

Fans pressed against the windows trying to catch a glimpse of her.

Security guards shouted for people to move back.

The car barely crawled forward.

Min Jae glanced outside and sighed.

"This is going to take a while."

Jae Rin leaned her head against the window.

The glass felt cool against her forehead.

The fans outside were smiling.

Crying.

Screaming her name.

But all she could see in her mind was a different face.

Keifer standing in a classroom.

Keifer arguing with her.

Keifer looking at her with disappointment the day everything fell apart.

Her chest felt tight again.

"Jae."

Min Jae's voice pulled her back.

She looked at him.

"You're zoning out again."

She exhaled slowly.

"I thought I saw someone tonight."

Min Jae waited.

"Who?"

Her voice was barely above a whisper.

"Someone from my past."

He didn't ask for details.

He already knew that her past was complicated.

Instead he gently placed his hand over hers.

"It's okay."

She looked at him quietly.

"For a second I thought it was real."

Min Jae squeezed her hand slightly.

"And if it was?"

Jae Rin didn't answer.

Because she didn't know.

A part of her wanted to run.

Another part wanted to confront everything she had left behind.

But tonight she was too tired to think about it.

Min Jae studied her face carefully.

"You don't have to deal with the past tonight."

His voice was calm.

"Tonight you survived something huge."

Jae Rin blinked.

"Survived?"

He smiled slightly.

"You just revealed your identity to the world."

"That's terrifying."

She laughed softly.

"True."

He brushed a strand of her long hair away from her face.

"You were incredible tonight."

Her cheeks warmed slightly.

"You always say that."

"Because it's always true."

Outside the fans were still screaming.

The car barely moved through the streets.

Time passed slowly.

Thirty minutes.

Then forty.

Jae Rin's eyes slowly began to close.

Min Jae noticed immediately.

"You're falling asleep."

She murmured quietly,

"I'm exhausted."

Her head slowly leaned against his shoulder.

Within seconds her breathing became steady.

Min Jae smiled softly.

After the adrenaline of the concert…

Her body had finally crashed.

He carefully adjusted his position so she could rest comfortably.

Outside the car, fans were still shouting her name.

But inside—

Everything was peaceful.

The driver glanced in the mirror.

"She's asleep."

Min Jae nodded quietly.

"She deserves it."

An Hour Later

It took nearly an hour for them to finally reach their house.

The car slowly pulled into the private driveway.

Security gates closed behind them.

The world outside disappeared.

Min Jae gently nudged her shoulder.

"Jae."

Her eyes opened slightly.

"We're home."

She looked around sleepily.

"Oh."

Her voice sounded small.

The exhaustion had completely taken over.

Min Jae stepped out of the car first and opened the door for her.

Jae Rin walked inside the house slowly.

The moment she entered—

The silence felt overwhelming.

No screaming fans.

No cameras.

No bright lights.

Just home.

She kicked off her shoes lazily.

"I'm going to sleep."

Min Jae laughed softly.

"You didn't even change."

"I don't care."

She walked toward the bedroom half-asleep.

Her long hair trailed behind her like black silk.

Min Jae followed quietly.

The moment her head touched the pillow—

She was asleep.

Completely.

Min Jae stood by the door for a moment watching her.

Tonight had changed everything.

The world now knew who Jae Rin really was.

But the girl sleeping peacefully in that bed…

Was still the same person he had known for years.

He turned off the lights quietly and left the room.

The Next Morning

Sunlight slowly filled the house.

The smell of food drifted through the kitchen.

Jae Rin blinked slowly as she woke up.

For a moment she felt confused.

Then the memories returned.

The concert.

The reveal.

The crowd.

Her body still felt heavy from exhaustion.

She pushed herself out of bed and walked toward the kitchen.

Min Jae stood at the stove cooking.

He looked up the moment he heard her footsteps.

"Good morning."

She blinked.

"You're cooking?"

He smiled.

"Obviously."

She sat down at the table slowly.

Her hair was messy from sleep.

"You didn't have to."

Min Jae placed a plate in front of her.

"I wanted to."

The plate held simple breakfast food.

Eggs.

Toast.

Fruit.

She stared at it for a moment.

"You're spoiling me."

He laughed.

"You performed for seventy thousand people yesterday."

"I think breakfast is fair."

She picked up a fork and started eating.

For a few minutes they sat quietly.

The morning sunlight filled the kitchen softly.

Finally Min Jae spoke.

"So."

She looked up.

"How does it feel?"

She thought about the question.

Then she shrugged.

"…Strange."

"Strange?"

"Yeah."

She leaned back slightly in her chair.

"For eleven years the world didn't know who I was."

"And now suddenly everyone does."

Min Jae nodded.

"That must feel weird."

She sighed softly.

"I keep wondering what happens next."

He smiled gently.

"Whatever you want to happen."

Jae Rin looked at him.

"Do you think my past will come back?"

Min Jae didn't hesitate.

"Maybe."

Her fingers tightened slightly around the fork.

"Are you scared?"

She thought for a moment.

Then shook her head.

"No."

Because if the past came back—

She wasn't the same girl who ran away anymore.

She was stronger now.

Min Jae watched her carefully.

"Whatever happens…"

He said quietly,

"You won't face it alone."

Jae Rin smiled softly.

For the first time since the concert…

The weight in her chest felt lighter.

Outside the house, the world was still talking about Jae Rin's reveal.

But inside the kitchen—

For a brief moment—

Life felt normal again.
