"We are speaking outside, right now," Henry said, his voice low but saturated with authority. Without waiting for a response, he gripped Jeremy's arm and pulled him out of the hospital room, as if the air inside were too thin to contain a secret of this magnitude.
Clara and Zoey could only remain still, watching Henry's retreating back with faces full of bewilderment. An awkward silence briefly filled the room before Clara cleared her throat softly.
"It seems your father has some very urgent business to attend to, sweetheart," Clara said, attempting to distract Zoey. Clara's heart was actually racing, having caught fragments of the conversation suggesting Celine already had a husband. She looked at Zoey with pity, not wanting the light in the little girl's eyes to vanish if she learned the woman she dreamed of as a mother already belonged to someone else.
"Okay," Zoey replied shortly, though her eyes remained fixed on the closed door with a held curiosity.
