Roseanne had to remind Kaden several times that day about the danger of going off with strangers even if he had met them before.
When she saw the boy return to the daycare safe and unharmed, her legs almost gave out. For a moment, the tension that had built in her chest all afternoon almost forced her to her knees.
"But Étienne is kind, Mommy. He took me to play basketball, just like Lucian!" Kaden said, his voice trembling as tears gathered in his eyes.
"Still, Mommy doesn't know him at all. We only met him once at the arcade a while ago." Roseanne crouched in front of him and gently held his shoulders. "Next time if you want to play basketball, wait for Lucian, okay? Or Mommy can take you there on weekends."
The day ended with him crying softly while saying sorry a few more times. Roseanne wasn't upset. If anything, she was worried sick. At the same time she felt guilty, wondering if he felt bored or trapped at the daycare.
